For money up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, a deposit at a registered small finance bank is covered by India’s Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), provided the deposit is eligible. Above that limit, or while a claim is being processed, your money depends on the condition of the bank itself. The insurance tells you how much you can lose, not how strong the bank is, so a higher rate is worth weighing against the exposure you carry above the insured amount.

What the insurance covers at a small finance bank

DICGC insures deposits at insured commercial banks, and registered small finance banks are one of the covered categories. Insurance attaches to the legal bank, not to a brand name, app or intermediary, so the name that matters is the one printed on your deposit receipt or account statement.

  1. Confirm the legal name on the deposit receipt or statement and check it against the bank’s official website and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for its registration status.
  2. Confirm the product is a bank deposit, such as a savings account, recurring deposit or fixed deposit. Mutual funds, bonds and other investments sold through bank branches are not covered by this insurance.
  3. Add up everything you hold at that same bank, including interest that has accrued, before you compare the total with the insured limit.

The ₹5 lakh limit, applied precisely

The limit is ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, and it includes both principal and accrued interest. Several points follow from that wording:

  • Balances across all branches of the same bank are added together. Opening several fixed deposits at one bank does not create several limits.
  • The limit applies to deposits held in the same right and capacity. How it applies to joint accounts or accounts held in a different capacity should be confirmed with the bank or DICGC before you rely on it.
  • Each bank has its own limit. Splitting money between two different small finance banks, or between a small finance bank and a larger bank, gives each deposit its own ₹5 lakh cover.

The table below uses illustrative figures to show how the limit works. The interest amounts are examples, not rates.

Situation at one bank Principal Accrued interest Total exposure Insured up to Not covered by DICGC
One fixed deposit ₹4,00,000 ₹40,000 ₹4,40,000 ₹4,40,000 Nil
Three fixed deposits across two branches ₹6,00,000 ₹30,000 ₹6,30,000 ₹5,00,000 ₹1,30,000
₹4,00,000 plus ₹20,000 interest at each of two different banks ₹4,00,000 at each bank ₹20,000 at each bank ₹4,20,000 at each bank ₹4,20,000 at each bank Nil

The uncovered portion in the second row is an unsecured claim on the bank. Whether you recover any of it depends on what the bank’s assets are worth at the time, which is why the limit matters more when you hold more than the insured amount in one place.

What insurance does not guarantee

Deposit insurance is a limit on loss in defined situations. It does not rate the bank’s solvency, and it does not guarantee immediate access to your money. A restriction or failure can delay access while claims are assembled and paid, so the cover answers the question of how much is protected, not when you will receive it.

Claim timelines to plan around

  • Bank under All-Inclusive Directions: DICGC’s Guide to Deposit Insurance describes a maximum 90-day statutory process for claims. That timeline is conditional on the bank providing the depositor list within 45 days.
  • Bank in liquidation: DICGC’s FAQ says it pays the liquidator within two months after receiving the claim list. That is the date DICGC pays the liquidator, not necessarily the date a depositor receives funds.

What DICGC’s own booklet says

DICGC’s information booklet states: “Yes, up to the limit insured the deposits are safe.” The sentence is conditional on the limit, so it does not mean every balance at every bank is protected. The same booklet adds that “Bank resolution is an activity that is carried out by the concerned authorities in the best interest of the depositors,” which describes the purpose of resolution rather than a promise about timing or outcome.

Small finance banks in the wider system

RBI’s Annual Report 2024-25 counts 11 small finance banks among 139 insured commercial banks as of March 31, 2025. The same report states that 97.7% of deposit accounts were fully insured as of September 30, 2024. That figure counts accounts across the whole covered system. It says nothing about the share of total balances that are insured, and it is not a statement about the safety of any particular small finance bank.

What RBI’s universal bank transition rules tell you

RBI’s circular of April 26, 2024 allows eligible small finance banks to apply for voluntary transition to universal bank status. The criteria set out in that circular include:

  • At least five years of satisfactory track record as a scheduled bank.
  • Listing of the bank’s shares.
  • A minimum audited net worth of ₹1,000 crore.
  • Prescribed capital adequacy.
  • Profits in each of the preceding two financial years.
  • Gross NPA of no more than 3% and net NPA of no more than 1% in each of the preceding two financial years.

Transition is conditional and requires an RBI assessment. These criteria describe what conversion requires; they are not a safety rating, and they do not show that every small finance bank meets them or that any particular bank is risk-free. Check whether a specific bank has applied for or completed conversion, since its status may have changed since the circular was issued.

How to compare a higher rate with the risk

A higher advertised rate answers only one question. Before choosing a small finance bank deposit, compare these four things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Total exposure at that bank: principal plus accrued interest, set against the ₹5 lakh limit.
  • Bank-specific status: the bank’s current official financial disclosures and any recent RBI notices about it.
  • Terms: the rate, tenure and early-withdrawal conditions printed in the bank’s current rate sheet, which should be read directly from the bank because rates change.
  • Liquidity needs: how much of this money you may need quickly, since locked-in deposits are the ones most exposed to a delay in access.

This article does not list current rates or rank individual banks. Those figures change, and they should be read from each bank’s own published terms on the day you decide.
