The exact model and generation, whether it is a desktop or laptop processor, the graphics card, the games and settings, and the total platform cost all matter. Check the full processor name before treating any benchmark or recommendation as relevant to your system.
What “Core i5” tells you—and what it doesn’t
Core i5 is not a single specification. Models sold under that label can differ by generation, desktop or laptop design, and supported platform. Intel documents the Core and Core Ultra families separately, so a Core Ultra 5 is not simply another name for a Core i5. Use Intel’s processor naming and numbering guide to identify a chip’s family and complete model before comparing it.
The tier name alone cannot establish whether a processor will meet a gaming target. A useful comparison names the full CPU model and considers the graphics card, resolution, graphics settings, memory, and the specific games. A result measured in one test setup should not be read as a guaranteed difference in another PC.
What Intel’s gaming comparisons show
Core Ultra 5 225 versus Core i5-14400
In an advocacy deck published September 17, 2025, Intel reported a 20% geometric-mean gaming performance lead for the Core Ultra 5 225 over the Core i5-14400 across ten selected games. Intel says testing was conducted as of April 2025 at 1080p High, using an RTX 5090 and the median of three runs. The games were Starfield, League of Legends, Civilization VII, Metro Exodus, Hitman 3, Far Cry 6, Total War: Warhammer III, Counter-Strike 2, Star Wars: Outlaws, and Rainbow Six Siege. The systems also differed in motherboard and memory speed: the Core Ultra 5 225 used a B860 board with DDR5-6400, while the Core i5-14400 used a B760 board with DDR5-4800. This is Intel’s result for those selected games and configurations, not evidence that every Core Ultra 5 is 20% faster than every Core i5. See Intel’s test details.

Core 5 120 versus Core i5-12400
Intel’s desktop performance index, which includes entries dated December 2, 2025, reports selected 1080p comparisons between the Core 5 120 and Core i5-12400. It lists up to 8% higher FPS in DOOM: The Dark Ages, up to 7% in Red Dead Redemption 2, and up to 6% in Counter-Strike 2. The index reports on-par FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong. The listed test systems used an RTX 4090 and specified different memory speeds and a single 16GB DIMM in the configurations. The title-by-title differences illustrate why a result from one game does not establish a universal gaming lead. Review Intel’s desktop performance index.
Intel’s March 2026 Core Ultra Series 2 page describes a 37-game, 1080p High geometric-mean average-FPS condition for a specified Core Ultra 7 processor. That is context for how a particular vendor performance claim is scoped; it is not a Core i5 benchmark. Read Intel’s Series 2 gaming information.

How to decide whether an i5 is enough for your gaming PC
- Start with your games and target. Decide which games, resolution, quality settings, and refresh-rate target matter to you. A CPU’s suitability is not defined by its tier label alone.
- Identify the exact processor. Record the full model, generation, and whether it is a desktop or laptop part. Do not apply a benchmark for another model or family as if it were a direct test of your chip.
- Consider the graphics card and test conditions. FPS results depend on the GPU and the rest of the test setup as well as the CPU. Look for comparisons using conditions close to your intended system and games.
- Compare individual games, not only a headline average. An average across selected titles can conceal both larger gains and parity in particular games. Check game-by-game FPS and, where available, low-frame-rate behavior under consistent conditions.
- Price the whole platform. Compare the processor together with any required motherboard, memory, and cooling. The cited comparisons do not establish current street prices for every model, and a cheaper CPU may not be the lower-cost choice if it requires a more expensive platform.
Building new or upgrading an existing PC?
For a new build
Compare exact processors in the context of the complete build and the games you intend to play. Include motherboard, memory, and cooling in the cost comparison, and check that the chosen components support the CPU. Neither the Intel comparisons cited here nor a Core i5 label identifies one universally best gaming processor.
For an upgrade
Before buying, check the motherboard’s exact CPU support list and the relevant socket, memory generation, firmware support, and cooling requirements. Compatibility cannot be confirmed without the specific motherboard and processor models. If an upgrade requires replacing other components, compare that total cost with the cost of a new platform.

How to read a gaming benchmark responsibly
When comparing two processors, look for the exact models, game list, resolution, graphics settings, graphics card, memory, motherboard, and test date. Distinguish an individual-game result from an average across games, and check whether the source describes average FPS or low-frame-rate behavior. Vendor testing can be useful evidence when its setup is disclosed, but its percentages apply to that test—not automatically to a differently configured PC.
The cited figures are test results, not statistics about how satisfied Core i5 owners are or how many gamers use these processors. They support a conditional answer: an i5 may suit a gaming build, but choosing one requires a model-specific comparison against the system and games you actually have in mind.
