I Want to Play the Villain! looks like a theatre-management game at first glance, but its published premise is more specific: it is a theatre-themed logic puzzle game about matching actors to roles. The free Steam demo is the best way to decide whether that puzzle loop suits you; the full game is planned for Q1 2027 and is not yet available.
What kind of game is I Want to Play the Villain!?
Steam describes I Want to Play the Villain! as a theatre-themed logic puzzle game. You assign actors to roles, taking account of each character’s ambitions, fears, wishes, and preferred parts. You can also rearrange the cast, costumes, and story to change a performance. Steam’s full-game listing frames the challenge as creating the right show by matching actors to roles.
“Management” is therefore best understood as arranging a cast, not running a theatre business. The published description does not establish systems for managing resources, staff, budgets, or a venue. If you want a simulation built around those systems, the available information does not show that this is one.
How does the gameplay work?
Match actors to roles
The central puzzle is to place characters in parts that satisfy their individual preferences and constraints. Their relationships and personalities inform those choices, so the task is more than assigning names to empty slots.

Change the story configuration
The developer says chapters introduce different settings, characters, mechanics, and stories, and that a single change can alter a performance. This suggests a modular puzzle structure: changing a cast or story element can lead to a different arrangement or outcome. The listing describes that design intent, but does not independently establish how much variety or replay value the finished game delivers.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Try it if you enjoy logic puzzles, character preferences, and experimenting with different cast-and-story combinations.
- Be cautious if “management gameplay” means resource planning, staffing, or building and running a theatre to you; those systems are not part of the published description.
- Wait for more evidence if you need a verdict on the complete game, its depth, or long-term variety. The full release has not yet been reviewed here.
Can you play it now?
As listed on Steam on October 4, 2026, the full game is not yet available and has a planned release window of Q1 2027. A free demo is listed as released on August 17, 2026. Because the release window is a plan rather than a confirmed launch date, check the full-game Steam listing for current status and the demo listing for availability.

The demo is worth trying if the idea of solving theatre-themed cast puzzles appeals to you. It gives you a way to judge the central mechanic while the full game remains unreleased. A full-game recommendation would be premature: the published material does not establish its final depth, performance, or release timing.
