If Google Search will not load in Safari on your iPhone, first determine whether the problem is Safari, the network, or Google itself. Open another site such as www.apple.com. If Apple loads but Google does not, work through Safari’s stored website data, extensions, VPN or Private Relay settings, and Screen Time restrictions. If no websites load, test the connection before changing Safari.
The menu paths below use the current iOS 26 layout, where Safari settings are under Settings > Apps > Safari, not the older Settings > Safari path.
1. Check whether the problem is Google or your connection
- In Safari, open
https://www.apple.com. - Try Google using cellular data instead of Wi-Fi. If cellular data is unavailable, join a different Wi-Fi network.
- Try both
google.comand a different search engine.
If Google works on cellular data but not on one Wi-Fi network, Safari is probably not the cause. The Wi-Fi network may have a DNS problem, content filter, firewall, captive portal, or VPN configuration. Restart the router if you control it, or contact the network administrator.
If websites load but Google Search alone fails, continue with the Safari checks below.

2. Restart the iPhone and Safari
Close Safari, turn the iPhone off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Then open Safari and try a new tab. Restarting is easy to overlook, but it is one of Apple’s recommended steps when Safari cannot load pages or quits unexpectedly.
Also test a direct address rather than a bookmark or search suggestion. Type https://www.google.com into Safari’s address field and tap Go.
3. Make sure JavaScript is enabled
Google’s search page relies on JavaScript for parts of its interface. A disabled JavaScript setting can cause pages or page features not to load correctly.

- Tap Apps > Safari.
- Tap Advanced.
- Turn JavaScript on.
Return to Safari and reload Google. This setting is normally enabled, so if it was already on, move to the next step.
4. Clear Safari’s website data
Corrupt cookies or cached files can interfere with Google’s redirects, sign-in session, or search page. You can either remove all Safari history and website data or remove website data while retaining your browsing history.
Option A: Clear history and website data
- Go to Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Choose the relevant time range if prompted, then tap Clear History.
This does not delete AutoFill information. It also does not erase browsing histories saved independently by websites or by other apps.

If Clear History is gray, Apple says there may be no data to clear, or Screen Time web-content restrictions may be preventing the action.

- Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data.
- Tap Remove All Website Data.
- Tap Remove Now.
This removes website data used for tracking and saved website login information, so you may need to sign in to sites again.
5. Check cookies
Safari should normally allow cookies while you troubleshoot Google Search. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and make sure Block All Cookies is off. If it is on, tap Block All to confirm the change.
Apple warns that blocking all cookies removes existing cookies and website data, quits Safari, reloads tabs, and can prevent sign-ins or site features from working. Do not leave this setting enabled as a general fix unless you specifically need it.
6. Temporarily disable Safari content blockers
Ad blockers and other Safari extensions can block scripts, images, cookies, or network resources required by Google.

- Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions.
- Tap each listed content blocker.
- Turn it off temporarily.
Multiple content blockers can be enabled at the same time. Disable all relevant blockers for the test, reload Google, and then re-enable them one by one. This identifies the extension causing the failure without permanently removing it.

7. Test VPN, firewall, filtering, and security software
An active VPN can make a website refuse to load, and third-party firewalls, antivirus apps, parental-control tools, and content filters can block connections that Safari needs.
To look for these controls, open Settings, swipe down to display the Settings search field, and search separately for:

Temporarily disconnect a personal VPN or pause a security/filtering app, then test Google again. Do not delete a profile belonging to a school or employer without asking its administrator. An organization-managed profile may intentionally enforce network and web restrictions.

8. Test iCloud Private Relay
Private Relay can affect an individual site when that site uses IP filtering, monitoring, or rate limiting. You can test it without changing the setting for every connection:
- Open the affected Google page in Safari.
- Tap the Page Menu button in the address bar.
- Tap Show IP Address.
This temporarily allows that site to see your IP address. The option may require the iPhone to be updated to the latest iOS version.
For a broader test, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay. Tap Private Relay, then choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow. iOS turns it back on automatically within 24 hours. To disable it permanently, choose Turn Off Private Relay.

- Cellular: Go to Settings > Cellular. For one line, tap Cellular Data Options; for multiple lines, select the line under SIMs. Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking.
9. Check Screen Time web restrictions
Screen Time can prevent Google Search pages or links from loading, particularly on a child’s iPhone.
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap the child’s name if applicable.
- Choose Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
- For testing, select Unrestricted.
The other choices are Limit Adult Websites and Only Approved Websites. The latter can block Google or search-result links unless they are explicitly allowed. If the iPhone is managed by a parent, school, or organization, the restriction may not be changeable from the device.
10. Update iOS
Safari is part of iOS, so an available system update may fix a browser or networking bug.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
- After the update finishes, restart the iPhone and test Google again.
11. Use Safari’s search field correctly
You do not need the Google app to search with Google in Safari. Safari’s search field accepts a web address, webpage name, word, phrase, or question. Type your search directly into the address field and tap Go. Installing or reinstalling the Google app will not repair a Safari-specific loading or network problem.

FAQ
Why is Google Search not loading in Safari but other websites are?
The failure may be limited to Google’s cookies or website data, a Safari content blocker, VPN, Private Relay, or a network filter. Clear Safari website data, disable extensions temporarily, and test Google on cellular data or another Wi-Fi network.

Is the correct Safari settings path still Settings > Safari?
On current iOS 26, use Settings > Apps > Safari. The older Settings > Safari path appears in many older troubleshooting guides but is not the current Apple menu path.
Will clearing Safari history delete my saved passwords or AutoFill details?
Apple says clearing Safari history and website data does not change AutoFill information. However, removing website data can delete saved website login sessions, so you may be signed out of sites.
Do I need the Google app for Google Search in Safari?
No. Enter a search term or question in Safari’s search field and tap Go. The Google app is separate from Google Search in Safari.

Why is Clear History gray on my iPhone?
There may be no Safari data to clear, or Screen Time web-content restrictions may be blocking the action. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
Should I turn off Private Relay permanently?
Not necessarily. First use Safari’s Page Menu > Show IP Address for the affected site, or select Turn Off Until Tomorrow under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay. If Google works afterward, Private Relay or the site’s IP controls may be involved.
The Bottom Line
For most Google-in-Safari failures, the quickest sequence is: test another network, restart the iPhone, enable JavaScript, clear Safari website data, disable content blockers, and test VPN or Private Relay. If restrictions are involved, check Screen Time and managed profiles before changing anything further. Do not treat reinstalling the Google app as a Safari fix—it is not required for searching from Safari.
