Google has not announced HDR emoji for Google Chat. The Android HDR feature drawing attention is support for Eclipsa Video, an HDR video standard—not a Chat emoji or interface upgrade. The possibility of an unreleased experiment cannot be ruled out, but Google’s public documentation reviewed as of October 9, 2026 does not substantiate a rollout.
What Google has—and has not—announced
Google’s Android announcements discuss HDR video support, while its Chat documentation covers emoji features without describing HDR rendering. There is no confirmed Chat HDR emoji feature, launch date, or rollout to report.
The distinction matters: support for HDR media in an Android platform does not, by itself, establish that every app’s graphics or emoji will use HDR. Google’s documentation does not connect the Android video announcement to Chat.
Why Android 17 is part of the speculation
The Android Developers Blog describes Eclipsa Video as an HDR video standard built on SMPTE ST 2094-50. It says, “Starting with Android 17, support for Eclipsa Video is built directly into the platform.” That statement is about video support, not emoji or Google Chat. Google’s Eclipsa Video announcement and its Android 17 announcement do not announce HDR emoji.

Android 16 documentation also describes HDR-related work, including SDR fallback, HDR screenshots, and media capture and playback. That platform context is not evidence that Chat renders emoji in HDR. Android 16 feature documentation addresses platform features rather than an HDR emoji rollout for Chat.
What Google Chat does support for emoji
Custom emoji for work and school
Google documents custom emoji for work and school accounts. An administrator can turn the feature on or off, and custom emoji can be shared within an organization but not with people outside it. Google’s help page describes creating and using custom emoji on desktop and Android; it does not describe HDR support. Google Chat Help: Use custom emoji in Google Chat.

A past emoji update, not a new HDR feature
In an update dated August 2, 2021, Google said Chat was moving to Emoji 13.1, adding a gender-neutral option for gender-modifiable emoji, and saving skin-tone and gender preferences for each individual emoji. The update described a gradual Android rollout beginning that date, with web and iOS availability expected in the following weeks. These are historical details, not a current rollout or evidence of HDR emoji. Google Workspace update, August 2, 2021.

No device purchase is established as necessary to get the alleged feature. Google has not confirmed that HDR emoji are coming to Chat, and its public materials do not identify a display requirement for such a feature. Buying an HDR-capable phone, monitor, or accessory would not be a supported way to enable HDR emoji in Google Chat.

A meaningful confirmation would need to name Google Chat or its emoji explicitly and explain availability or rollout. Until Google does so, treat the claim as speculation rather than a feature announcement. The reviewed public sources do not establish whether Google has an unreleased experiment or internal development.
