GoldenEye 007 Plus’s repository says it distributes project source and material, not the original retail ROM. That does not prove every file using the Plus name is safe, or settle whether downloading or using a personal ROM is lawful where you live. Use the maintainer’s canonical repository, avoid any download that bundles a GoldenEye ROM, and treat Nintendo’s published warning about pirated game downloads as a serious legal red flag.
What GoldenEye 007 Plus offers—and what it does not
GoldenEye 007 Plus describes itself as an enhanced fork of the GoldenEye 007 Nintendo 64 decompilation. Its stated aims include optimization, co-op and multiplayer features, third-person play, quality-of-life changes, and experimental map creation. The project repository reports a development tree through internal checkpoint V90, dated 2026-09-28; that is a project-reported snapshot, not a promise about the status of every download carrying the name.
The repository says it contains source code and project material, and states: “No original retail ROM is distributed by this project.” It also says users need legally obtained retail game data where the upstream build or extraction process requires it. In other words, the project files and the copyrighted game data are distinct things. See the GoldenEye 007 Plus repository for the maintainer’s description.

Nintendo of America says games offered through third-party file links or peer-to-peer networks are unauthorized copies. Its support FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s published position and a clear warning against downloading a GoldenEye ROM from an unofficial site; it is not a complete analysis of every country’s law or every possible personal-copy situation. Read Nintendo of America’s ROMs and emulators FAQ.
#1 Best Overall
- This authentic renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
- It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
- This game is an authentic copy.
The sources available here do not establish a universal rule for personally dumping a cartridge, using a ROM you already have, or running a mod or emulator. Whether a particular activity is lawful can depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances. Owning a cartridge should not be treated as automatic proof that downloading, creating, or using a ROM is lawful everywhere.
How to assess a Plus download
- Start at the maintainer’s canonical repository. Confirm that the project is Joshua-1248/GoldenEye-007-Plus, rather than a lookalike page or repackaged download. This helps establish provenance, but does not independently guarantee a file is harmless.
- Check what the download contains. The project says it does not distribute the retail ROM. Treat a site or bundle that includes a GoldenEye ROM as a major warning sign, not as an official Plus component.
- Do not mistake a clean scan for legal permission—or a repository for a security audit. The reviewed project page does not provide independent malware testing for every release, and no particular release binary has been established here as scanned or virus-free. Check release provenance and use your usual security tools, while recognizing these checks do not prove legality or safety.
- Follow the project’s game-data requirements without sourcing a ROM from third parties. The upstream n64decomp/007 README says a prior copy of the game is needed to extract assets. That requirement explains why a build may need original game data; it does not authorize distributing that data or resolve whether your own copy is lawful to use.
Do not confuse Plus with a separate PC port
GoldenEye 007 PC Port is a different project, not another name for Plus. Its README describes a v0.4.0 release dated 2026-09-28 for Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck, and says its release bundles omit ROMs and game assets. It requires a user-provided GoldenEye 007 N64 ROM; for that version, NTSC-U is listed as currently supported, while PAL and NTSC-J are recognized but not yet supported. Those are that port’s own version-specific details, not compatibility guidance for GoldenEye 007 Plus. See the PC Port project README.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The Plus repository’s description and legal notice are statements by the project, not independent legal clearance or an endorsement by the rights holders. Nintendo’s warning makes unofficial ROM downloads a substantial legal and trust concern. Neither source settles every local-law question about a personal dump or establishes that a given Plus executable is malware-free. Make the decision file by file and keep the project software separate from copyrighted game data.
