Gmail was reported to have returned in Iran on May 26, 2026, as the country began gradually restoring access to the global internet after an 88-day blackout. That report described an early, selective reopening—not proof that Gmail was reliably available to everyone or that Google had permanently lifted a block. The sources available as of October 4, 2026 do not establish Gmail’s current reachability across Iranian networks.
What “Gmail unblocked” means in this report
The Guardian reported on May 26, 2026 that Iranian officials cited Gmail’s return as an early sign that the global internet was reopening. The article described connectivity as gradual and selective, with providers only beginning to reconnect. It did not report a Google announcement that an Iran-specific Gmail restriction had been permanently removed. The Guardian’s report is evidence of an early restoration, not a guarantee of uniform access.
The scale of the wider reconnection also depended on what was measured and when. The Guardian reported that NetBlocks observed connectivity rise to more than one-third of its previous normal level shortly after it began returning, while a separate Kentik estimate cited in the same article was below 10% of pre-shutdown levels at the time. Those are distinct observations; neither establishes Gmail availability on every provider. The article described the blackout as lasting 88 days and cited NetBlocks’ figure of 2,093 hours disconnected from the global internet.

The May report supports saying that Gmail was reported to have returned during the initial reopening. It does not establish whether a person on any particular Iranian ISP can connect now. As of October 4, 2026, the available sources provide no contemporaneous, ISP-by-ISP check of Gmail reachability in Iran.

Google’s Workspace availability guidance addresses business and education services, and says some Google Workspace services are restricted in Iran. It also distinguishes those services from Google services that may be available for personal use. That guidance does not, by itself, establish the present status of personal Gmail access. Google’s Workspace availability page is therefore relevant to work and school accounts, not a live test of personal Gmail connectivity.
Personal Gmail and Google Workspace are different questions
| Service or use | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|
| Personal Gmail | The Guardian reported Gmail’s return as an early sign of internet reopening on May 26, 2026. Current access across Iranian networks is not established. |
| Google Workspace for business or education | Google says some Workspace services are restricted in Iran and that business or education use is not offered there. This is separate from whether a personal Gmail account can connect. |
Why access reports can change during a shutdown
Iran’s service availability has shifted during other shutdowns, and recovery has not necessarily happened at the same time for every Google product. A Filterwatch/Article 19 analysis based on Google Transparency Report data says Gmail traffic declined around 09:00 UTC on June 18, 2025, partly recovered on June 20, and was fully restored by June 25. The analysis also describes wider connectivity loss and phased recovery. Read the June 2025 shutdown analysis.

A later Filterwatch analysis of the January 2026 shutdown reports that Google Search and Images recovered on January 18, while Maps, Sheets, and Firefox recovered on January 24. It says YouTube did not show a meaningful return to pre-January 8 levels in the data analyzed. These findings illustrate uneven recovery among services; they do not establish Gmail’s exact recovery timeline in that shutdown. Read Filterwatch’s January 2026 shutdown analysis.

Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard reports service incidents, but it is a global service-status tool, not a regional reachability monitor. A dashboard showing no incident does not demonstrate that Gmail is accessible from inside Iran, where local filtering or a broader internet shutdown may affect a connection.
