Yes. Gears of War: E-Day is a mainline prequel and origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It depicts Emergence Day—the first Locust attack on the surface of Sera and the beginning of the Locust War—not the whole war.
Where E-Day fits in the Gears of War timeline
E-Day takes place before the original game, with a fourteen-year gap between the two. The Coalition and Xbox state that interval, but the cited official pages do not give a real-world calendar year for the events. The safest way to place the game is relative to the original: it is an earlier chapter in the series timeline.

Emergence Day is the moment the Locust emerge from below and attack Sera. The game focuses on the opening of that conflict; its setting should not be mistaken for a depiction of the entire Locust War. Xbox’s official game page describes the event and the game’s timeline.
Is it a spin-off or a mainline game?
It is a mainline entry, not a spin-off. The Coalition has described E-Day as a new mainline Gears game that tells an origin story earlier in the timeline. In the 2024 Xbox Wire interview, Creative Director Matt Searcy said, “It’s going to feel like a new Gears game, because that’s what it is.” The team’s framing is an origin story rather than a chronological sequel. The Coalition’s Xbox Wire interview explains that choice.
