Final Fantasy IX is still worth considering if you want a classic fantasy JRPG and are comfortable with a game that first appeared in 2000. Its age is the key trade-off: the available sources support its genre, broad platform reach and strong historical critical reception, but do not establish how its pacing, combat feel or modern ports will suit you. This is a spoiler-free recommendation, not a hands-on review.
Is Final Fantasy IX worth playing today?
For players seeking a traditional fantasy role-playing game, yes. For someone expecting a contemporary action-RPG, it is a more uncertain fit. Square Enix identifies Final Fantasy IX as a JRPG, and its original PlayStation release dates to 2000; Metacritic records November 13, 2000 as the initial release date, though launch dates varied by territory. Square Enix’s official product page and Metacritic’s details page establish those basics.
That age is not by itself a reason to skip it, but it should shape expectations. The sources available here do not establish specific details about controls, combat mechanics, pacing, accessibility or the quality of current ports, so those are not grounds for a blanket recommendation. If older presentation and design conventions are part of the appeal of a classic, it is a plausible choice; if they are a deal-breaker, consider that before buying.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: players who want a fantasy JRPG and are open to playing a title originally released in 2000.
- A less certain fit: players who specifically want contemporary action-RPG pacing or need to know how a particular version performs on their hardware. The cited sources do not answer those questions.
The PlayStation version has a 94 Metascore based on 22 critic reviews in Metacritic’s listing. That is useful historical context for its critical reputation, not a rating for every later edition or a promise that you will enjoy it. Metacritic’s PlayStation critic page provides the score and review count.

Is Final Fantasy IX a good first Final Fantasy game?
It can be a reasonable starting point if you want a JRPG and are willing to try a game from 2000. The evidence cited here does not establish how it compares with other entries as an introduction, nor does it support a detailed account of its story or systems. Choose it for the kind of experience you want—a classic fantasy role-playing game—not on the assumption that its age or reputation guarantees a modern feel.
What platforms can I play Final Fantasy IX on?
Square Enix’s official product page lists platform marks for mobile, Steam/Windows, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The platform families do not, by themselves, establish which edition is currently purchasable in your country or what it costs. Confirm the listing in your regional storefront before choosing a version. Square Enix’s product page is the source for its platform marks.

A Nintendo Switch physical package was mentioned in an announcement excerpt reposted on Reddit, but that repost does not verify a current retail listing, what an edition contains or whether it is in stock. Treat it as evidence of an announcement, not proof that a physical copy is available now. The Reddit repost carries the excerpt.
