No official Square Enix source cited here says that FINAL FANTASY IX is switching genres in 2026. The publisher classifies FINAL FANTASY IX as an RPG. Its separate 2026 announcement is for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, which Square Enix also describes as an RPG—not a new version of FINAL FANTASY IX. Square Enix’s announcement and North American store listing distinguish the two games.
Is Final Fantasy IX changing genres?
Square Enix’s North American store listing identifies FINAL FANTASY IX as an RPG and lists its Nintendo Switch edition with a December 9, 2025 release date. That listing describes the familiar role-playing game, including its story, character abilities, Trance system, synthesis, and minigames, along with features such as boosters, autosave, and high-definition movies and character models. It does not announce a 2026 genre change. See the official FINAL FANTASY IX listing.

The careful conclusion is limited to what those official pages establish: they do not substantiate a 2026 genre switch for FINAL FANTASY IX. That is different from claiming Square Enix could never make another announcement.

What is the new Final Fantasy game announced for 2026?
The distinct game is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE. In a June 11, 2026 announcement, Square Enix called it the first HD-2D FINAL FANTASY game, described its battles as strategic and turn-based, and classified it as an RPG. The publisher’s announcement names the title as FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE—not FINAL FANTASY IX. Read Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE announcement.

Square Enix says FINAL FANTASY IX has sold “over five million copies” since its release in 2000. The publisher’s store copy does not give a more precise count or a reporting date, so the figure should not be read as an exact current total. The same store page lists the Nintendo Switch edition.
