No—Disney is not currently discussing a full acquisition of Epic Games. Disney President and Chief Creative Officer Dana Walden said a buyout is not what the companies are talking about now. Disney already has an equity stake in Epic, and the companies say more partnership launches are planned over the next two years.

Is Disney buying Epic Games?

Not according to Walden’s current account of the discussions. Asked about Disney buying all of Epic Games, she said, “Those are not the conversations we’re having right now.” She also described the relationship as a strong partnership. Insider Gaming reported her comments.

“Right now” matters: her statement describes what the companies are discussing at present. It does not establish what either company might consider in the future. There is no confirmed full-acquisition deal in the cited statements.

Did Disney buy Fortnite or take a stake in Epic?

Disney did not buy Fortnite or Epic Games. On February 7, 2024, Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in Epic Games, alongside a multiyear collaboration. Disney’s announcement describes the investment and partnership; it does not say Disney acquired control of Epic.

That distinction explains why headlines about a Disney-Epic “deal” can be confusing: an equity investment makes Disney a shareholder, but it is not the same as purchasing the entire company. Epic Games remains the company behind Fortnite; the confirmed arrangement is an investment and collaboration, not a full buyout.

Why did Disney invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games?

The announced strategic centerpiece is a persistent, open and interoperable games and entertainment universe connected with Fortnite. Disney says it is intended to bring together stories and characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar, with ways for users to play, watch, shop, create and engage. The plan extends beyond a single character skin or limited-time event, although the announcement does not provide a complete feature list or launch calendar. Disney’s 2024 announcement and its project description outline that ambition.

Disney’s March 2026 leadership announcement also identifies Sean Shoptaw as overseeing the Games and Digital Entertainment organisation and its Epic collaboration to develop a Disney universe connected to Fortnite. Disney’s leadership information indicates the project remains part of the company’s stated organisational remit.

What Disney collaborations are already in Fortnite?

Examples reported by Insider Gaming include Fortnite integrations featuring The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, Maleficent, Captain Hook, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Toy Story. The report also points to a Marvel-focused Chapter 5 Season 4 and Star Wars content in Chapter 6. These examples show that the relationship has already produced branded Fortnite content, but they do not establish that every rumored future crossover will happen.

It is useful to separate this kind of existing collaboration from the larger universe Disney and Epic have described. A branded event or character integration is a specific Fortnite appearance; the proposed universe is a broader, multiyear project. The public descriptions do not make every current collaboration a feature of that future experience.

What new Disney-Fortnite collaborations are coming?

Walden said the companies have “a number of launches coming up in the next two years” intended to demonstrate the partnership’s value. That is a forward-looking statement, not a dated release slate. The cited sources do not identify every launch, give their release dates, or confirm a particular season or film tie-in.

  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online

For now, treat specific claims about future characters, seasons or titles as rumors unless Disney, Epic or a reliable report confirms them. In particular, a proposed Chapter 8 or Avengers: Doomsday connection is an inference, not an announced plan.

What to watch for in future announcements

  • Ownership: A new investment or acquisition announcement would be different from licensing a character or producing an in-game event.
  • Confirmation: A launch becomes concrete when the companies identify it, rather than when a crossover is inferred from a release calendar.
  • Scope: A one-off cosmetic or event is not the same thing as a persistent feature in the planned universe.
  • Timing: The two-year window Walden described is not a schedule; wait for a specific date before treating a launch as imminent.
