There is no universal yes-or-no answer. For a US player, Sony’s software terms prohibit emulating covered Sony software and bypassing or disabling security protections. US copyright law and a Ninth Circuit emulator case address narrower circumstances; neither makes every game copy, BIOS file, or method of playing Demon’s Souls on a PC lawful. Buying a PS3 disc does not, by itself, settle those separate questions.
Is it legal to play the PS3 version of Demon’s Souls on a PC?
The answer depends on your jurisdiction, the terms that apply to your copy, how you obtained or made the game and firmware files, and whether your method involves bypassing a protection. “Is an emulator legal?” is not the same question as “May I copy this game?” or “May I obtain or extract this BIOS?”
The available US sources point in different directions without creating a blanket permission: Sony’s US terms restrict emulation, copying, and circumvention, while copyright rules and the court decision discussed below concern particular situations. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US Software EULA prohibits emulating the covered software, copying it without express prior written consent, and using means to bypass or disable encryption, security, or authentication mechanisms. The EULA says that violating its conditions immediately voids the license. Sony’s US Product Software License Agreement also characterizes use of its software as licensed rather than as a transfer of copyright ownership, and restricts copying, unauthorized software or hardware, and circumvention.

These are Sony’s contractual terms. They are not a court ruling on every emulator or a complete account of every statutory argument that might apply. The precise terms for a particular historical PS3 release or region may differ; the cited US agreements do not establish the terms for every edition worldwide.

Does buying a PS3 disc let you make a game image?
No general rule in the cited sources says that buying a physical disc automatically authorizes any further copy or use. The disc is not the same thing as ownership of the game’s copyright, and Sony’s license terms expressly distinguish licensed use from ownership of the software.

Does the Connectix case make BIOS copying legal?
Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp. was a Ninth Circuit appellate case involving intermediate copies of Sony’s PlayStation BIOS during development of the Virtual Game Station emulator. It is relevant to emulator development and reverse engineering, but its facts and holding do not establish that every consumer may download a copyrighted BIOS, distribute one, extract one by any method, or bypass current access controls.
Keep the issues separate: a court decision about intermediate copying in a developer’s reverse-engineering process is not blanket permission for a personal BIOS download or for every way of making a firmware copy. Sony’s US EULA separately prohibits using means to bypass or disable security mechanisms for covered software.

Is there a preservation exemption for personal emulation?
The US Copyright Office’s 37 CFR §201.40 includes a video-game preservation exemption for qualifying libraries, archives, or museums, subject to stated conditions. It permits specified access, copying, or modification for personal local gameplay in that institutional context. It is not a general exemption for private users and does not authorize ordinary users to download game or BIOS files.
Does RPCS3 support Demon’s Souls, and is there an official PC version?
RPCS3’s compatibility listing includes the original PS3 game and marked Demon’s Souls “Playable” in an entry updated 2020-05-04. That is a dated project status, not a guarantee of performance on a particular PC, a legal approval, or a test of the game here. RPCS3 says its compatibility listings can change.

The original PS3 game is distinct from the PlayStation 5 remake. The sources cited here do not establish an official native PC release of either version. Compatibility with an emulator should not be mistaken for an official PC edition.

What should a US player check before relying on a legal answer?

Because the result turns on those facts and the applicable jurisdiction and license, anyone needing a definitive answer about their own setup should consult a lawyer familiar with the relevant law.
