Yes—if you enjoy demanding action RPGs and are comfortable with deliberate pacing. Dark Souls: Remastered preserves the original’s level design, includes the Artorias of the Abyss expansion, and offers optional online play. Those features make a strong case for trying it; whether its combat and exploration feel rewarding is ultimately a matter of taste.
What you get with Dark Souls: Remastered
Remastered includes the main game and the Artorias of the Abyss expansion. FromSoftware said the remaster retains the original level design while introducing technical and online changes. Its official release announcement lists PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows as platforms. FromSoftware’s January 12, 2018 announcement describes those changes and the release platforms.

Exploration that asks you to pay attention
Because the remaster retains the original level design, its appeal rests partly on learning the world as you move through it. Routes, shortcuts, and encounters reward patience and observation rather than constant forward momentum. If you like piecing together a place through exploration, that deliberate structure can remain compelling.

Combat built around commitment
Dark Souls favors measured decisions: attacks, movement, and defense each require attention to timing and positioning. That can make progress feel earned, but it also means the game is a poor fit if you want forgiving combat or a fast, frictionless pace.
An atmosphere tied to the journey
The game’s appeal is not just defeating the next enemy. Its exploration, combat, and atmosphere work together to create a journey that asks you to persist and pay attention. That is an editorial judgment about the experience, not a claim that every player will enjoy it.

- Become the Slayer of Demons - Venture to the northern kingdom of Boletaria – a once prosperous land of knights, now beset with unspeakable creatures and ravenous demons. Meet strange characters, unhinged and twisted by the world around them, and unravel the unsettling story of Demon’s Souls.
- Face the world’s greatest warriors in ferocious PVP combat - With online invasions adding to the danger of your quest. Or play cooperatively by summoning allies to aid in your fight against the demons. Active PS Plus subscription required for online multiplayer.
Who should play it—and who might not
- A good fit: Players who want a challenging action RPG, enjoy exploring interconnected spaces, and are willing to learn from setbacks.
- Probably not a good fit: Players who prefer frequent guidance, easy progression, or combat that lets them attack without carefully considering timing and risk.
- Consider your preferred pace: The case for playing in 2026 is strongest if an older game’s deliberate rhythm sounds appealing rather than dated or frustrating.
Online play is optional
The PlayStation Store listing describes online play as optional, supports up to six players, and says online play requires PlayStation Plus. You can therefore consider the game without treating multiplayer as a prerequisite. The PlayStation Store listing provides those PlayStation-specific details.
The official Japanese Dark Souls site surfaced an August 18, 2026 server-maintenance notice for Remastered. A maintenance notice confirms maintenance was announced; it does not establish how busy matchmaking is or guarantee uniform service across regions. The official Dark Souls series site is the source for that notice.

Which edition should you choose?
Choose the version that matches the system you own, and verify compatibility and local availability before buying. The official 2018 announcement lists PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows, while official store listings cover PS4 and Xbox One. The PlayStation listing also identifies PlayStation Plus as a requirement for online play on that platform.

- Take on the role of the Herald, Pyromancer, or Warrior as you navigate the haunted ruins of The Sunless City. Your ultimate challenge?
- A brutal battle against the formidable Dragon Slayer Ornstein and the fearsome Executioner Smough.
- 1-3 players
- 100 minutes + play time
- Ages: 14+
How to decide if it is worth your time
- Check your appetite for challenge. Expect to learn through careful play and setbacks, not through a consistently easy progression curve.
- Decide whether the pace suits you. Exploration and combat are deliberate; if that sounds engaging, the game’s age need not be a deal-breaker.
- Confirm the edition for your platform. Remastered includes the main game and Artorias of the Abyss; check the current official listing for compatibility and availability.
- Treat online as an extra. Multiplayer is optional, and platform requirements apply if you choose to play online.
A 2026 reader phrased the question as, “Is Dark Souls Remastered worth playing in 2026?” That wording captures the practical decision, but it is not evidence of broad player opinion. The answer depends less on the year than on whether the game’s demanding, deliberate design suits you.
