Yes, Coupang can be used with sensible precautions, but no online marketplace is risk-free. Coupang describes payment safeguards and supports passkey sign-in. It also reported a 2025 personal-data incident involving accounts in Korea. The company said payment details and login credentials were not exposed in that incident; that is Coupang’s account of its investigation, not a guarantee for every user, market, or future event.
Is Coupang safe to use, and is it legit?
Coupang is a legitimate e-commerce service, but legitimacy and security are separate questions: using a real service does not remove the possibility of account misuse, fraud, or a data incident. Coupang’s disclosures describe controls for payment processing, fraud prevention, access, and encryption. Those are the company’s stated practices, not an independent security audit or proof of zero risk. Your practical risk also depends on your account settings and how you respond to unexpected messages or orders.

For its payment services, Coupang says it processes information such as registered payment methods, transactions, refunds, access logs, IP addresses, and device information. Its privacy notice describes technical, administrative, and physical safeguards, including access controls and encryption of passwords, important data, and data in transit. See the Coupang Pay Privacy Notice for the company’s full disclosure.
Is it safe to put my credit card on Coupang?
Coupang’s privacy notice says payment methods may be registered and payment and refund information processed to provide the service and prevent fraud. That disclosure does not establish a comparative security ranking for credit cards, bank payments, mobile payments, or Coupay Money, so the available information cannot show that one option is categorically safest on Coupang.

The figures and findings below are from Coupang’s dated statements and should be read as the company’s account of its investigation. They concern accounts in Korea; they do not establish the scope of an incident in every Coupang market or service.

Coupang’s November 29, 2025 statement
Coupang said it learned on November 18, 2025, of unauthorized access involving about 4,500 accounts. In its November 29 statement, it said its investigation expanded the number of accounts involved to about 33.7 million in Korea. It listed names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and certain order histories as exposed. Coupang said payment details, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not included. The company also said it blocked the access route, strengthened monitoring, and engaged an outside security firm. Read its November 29, 2025 incident statement.

Coupang later distinguished accounts accessed from data it said had been retained: its December 25 update described data associated with 33 million accounts as accessed, while data from about 3,000 accounts was retained, including 2,609 building entrance codes. Coupang said the retained data was subsequently deleted and not transferred to others, citing forensic work and the perpetrator’s statements. These are the company’s reported findings, not an independently established regulator conclusion. The update also said payment and login data were not accessed as part of the described incident. - Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
- Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
- Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
The distinction matters: “accounts accessed” and “records retained” are not interchangeable. Coupang’s November and December statements also describe findings at different points in its investigation, so their figures should not be combined into a single measure of records kept.
Checking whether your own information was affected
On April 20, 2026, Coupang announced an identity-verified exposure lookup and said it would be available through June 20, 2026. That announced availability period has passed. The notice does not establish whether a later lookup process exists; use Coupang’s current official support channels to ask about any current account-specific process. See the April 20, 2026 lookup notice.

How do I secure my Coupang account?
Set up a passkey if it is available to you
Coupang describes passkeys as passwordless sign-in using public/private key cryptography: its guide says the public key is stored on Coupang’s servers and the private key on your device. Sign-in uses your device’s biometric check or PIN. Coupang calls its implementation FIDO-compliant and says passkeys are resistant to phishing; that is the company’s description, not a promise that every account-compromise scenario is eliminated.

- On a compatible device, open the Coupang app and go to My Account → Security and Sign-in → Add Passkey.
- Complete the device’s biometric or PIN prompt to register the passkey.
- Check that your device has an active screen lock and the relevant account synchronization enabled if you expect passkeys to transfer to another device.
Coupang lists iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later, as requirements, along with an active screen lock. On iPhone, it lists iCloud Keychain; on Android, Google Password Manager. Coupang says passkeys usually transfer when the same Apple ID or Google Account is used with synchronization enabled. If you stop using an old phone, Coupang recommends erasing it. Consult the Coupang Passkey Guide for its current instructions.

Be cautious with messages claiming to be from Coupang
Coupang warned customers about communications impersonating the company after the 2025 incident. Do not use an unsolicited message’s link to sign in or provide account details. Open the Coupang app yourself or type the official website address into your browser, then check notices or contact support there.
How do I turn off one-touch payment?
Coupang’s July 15, 2026 payment FAQ says one-touch payment can skip the extra password-entry step for eligible orders, although Coupang may still request the password under its security criteria. To change the setting in the mobile app, follow this path:
- Open My Coupang.
- Tap All Menus → Payment Methods → Payment Password and Security Settings.
- Open One-touch Payment and switch it off.
The control gives you a choice about the additional password prompt; the FAQ does not establish that turning the feature off changes the other security checks Coupang applies. See the one-touch payment FAQ.
What should I do if I see an order I did not place?
Coupang’s July 15, 2026 FAQ directs customers with an unrecognized order to customer support. Open the app or navigate to Coupang’s official site directly rather than following a link in an unexpected text or email. Check your payment account as well, and contact the relevant payment provider if you see a transaction you do not recognize. Coupang’s order and payment FAQ provides its guidance for order questions.
