Company of Heroes 3 is worth buying if you want tactical World War II real-time battles, faction-based multiplayer, or both. Multiplayer-focused buyers have the clearest case: the PC version offers four factions, online player-versus-player matches, co-op, skirmishes, and continued update support. Solo buyers receive two campaigns and skirmish modes, but the Italian dynamic campaign’s strategic map is less convincing than its battles, and the game launched with polish problems that its developer has acknowledged.

Platform choice changes the recommendation. PC is the safer purchase for players who want ongoing balance, map, artificial-intelligence, and campaign changes. Relic said in 2024 that routine updates for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions would end, although server maintenance and critical fixes could continue. A major PC update, version 3.0, was announced for November 5, 2026; at the October 13, 2026 evidence date, it was still upcoming.

The short verdict

Buy Company of Heroes 3 on PC if your priority is tactical combat and multiplayer longevity, and you are comfortable with a mixed critical reception and an uneven solo campaign structure. Buy the console version only if its currently available content is enough for you; do not assume it will receive the same future updates as PC.

The game is strongest when you are directing units under pressure rather than simply watching a campaign map advance. Flanking, line of sight, elevation, garrison assaults, armor positioning, and supply management give individual battles meaningful decisions. Those systems support repeatable skirmishes and multiplayer better than they support an unqualified recommendation for both campaigns.

Steam’s English-language user score was 62% positive from 13,378 reviews in the listing accessed on October 13, 2026. Recent English reviews were 56% positive from 221 reviews. Those are dated snapshots, not permanent ratings, but they accurately signal that this is not a consensus recommendation.

What you get when you buy it

The Steam product listing describes a package built around four activities: two single-player campaigns, skirmish play, and online multiplayer. The setting covers the North African and Italian theaters of World War II.

Content What it offers Best fit
North African campaign A more traditional campaign structure with real-time battles as its main focus. Solo players who want a straightforward story-led experience.
Italian dynamic campaign A strategic map in which you manage forces, towns, resources, and supply lines before entering battles. Players interested in campaign-level decision-making who can tolerate passive opposition on the map.
Skirmish Standalone battles against computer-controlled opponents, separate from campaign progression. Solo practice, experimentation, and repeat play.
Online PvP Competitive multiplayer using the game’s faction and tactical systems. Players who want the game’s longest-term replay value.
Online co-op Cooperative multiplayer with the same core faction roster used for multiplayer play. Friends who prefer teamwork to competition.

The four multiplayer and co-op factions are US Forces, British Forces, Wehrmacht, and Deutsches Afrikakorps. Each gives multiplayer a distinct identity instead of reducing every match to cosmetic differences. The listing also identifies Steam Workshop support, so PC buyers can account for community-created content when considering replay value.

How the tactical battles play

The battle layer is the main reason to consider the game. Success comes from controlling space and timing, not from sending every available unit directly toward the nearest objective.

Flanking and exposed armor

Armored vehicles are not equally protected from every direction. Maneuvering around an opponent can expose weaker side armor, turning positioning into a damage advantage. A player who watches only the front of a tank can lose an engagement that would have been favorable with a short flanking move.

Infantry and garrisons

Infantry can breach garrisoned positions, allowing you to contest buildings instead of treating them as permanent defensive obstacles. This creates a practical choice between spending time and resources to clear a structure or routing around it and accepting the risk of enemy fire.

Elevation and line of sight

Terrain affects what units can see and how safely they can engage. High ground, buildings, cover, and blocked sight lines therefore matter before the first shot is fired. Players who enjoy tactical games with readable positional consequences will find more depth here than in a system based only on unit counters.

Campaign-map logistics

Outside battles, the campaign layer asks you to manage forces and supply lines. Those decisions are intended to connect one engagement to the next, but their success differs between campaigns. The strategic systems are ambitious; they should not be mistaken for proof that every campaign-map interaction is equally active or polished.

Is the solo content worth it?

Solo value depends on whether you want a traditional campaign, a strategic map, or repeatable individual battles. The two campaigns are not interchangeable experiences.

The North African campaign

The North African campaign is the safer solo recommendation. A retrospective assessment by PC Gamer praised it as the more traditional campaign, with the real-time battles carrying much of the experience. If you want a clear sequence of missions and less emphasis on managing a large strategic map, this is the campaign most likely to meet that expectation.

The Italian dynamic campaign

The Italian campaign is the more experimental option. Its dynamic map lets you move forces, manage resources and towns, and arrange supply lines before committing to battles. That design can appeal to players who enjoy making operational decisions rather than selecting missions from a fixed list.

The limitation is the behavior of the opposing forces on that map. The same PC Gamer retrospective reported that enemy forces often sat back instead of creating consistently active strategic pressure. Relic CEO Justin Dowdeswell also acknowledged that the project’s ambition exceeded its launch polish. In his September 16, 2026 interview with PC Gamer, he said, “We set out to build the biggest Company of Heroes game ever,” and later, “Yeah, we bit off more than we could chew.”

Those comments do not make the campaign unplayable, but they establish a useful expectation: the Italian map’s systems are interesting ideas with uneven execution. Its real-time battles can still be enjoyable; the strategic layer is the part most likely to disappoint a solo buyer expecting aggressive, constantly reactive opposition.

Skirmishes as the solo safety net

Skirmish mode gives solo players a reason to return after finishing or tiring of the campaigns. You can focus on the combat systems without relying on the campaign map to provide momentum. It is also a practical place to learn how factions, armor angles, garrisons, terrain, and sight lines interact before entering online matches.

Skirmishes do not erase the Italian campaign’s weaknesses, but they make the purchase less dependent on one particular campaign structure. If you primarily want a large collection of tactical battles against computer opponents, the package is easier to justify than if you expect two equally polished strategic campaigns.

Is it worth buying for multiplayer?

Multiplayer is the strongest argument for purchase, particularly on PC. The game supports online PvP and online co-op and provides four factions with different battlefield identities. That combination gives players more room to develop a preferred playstyle and to learn matchups over time.

Faction choice

Faction Role in the buying decision
US Forces One of the four available multiplayer and co-op factions listed by Steam.
British Forces Provides another distinct faction option for competitive and cooperative play.
Wehrmacht Included in the multiplayer and co-op roster, giving players an Axis faction with its own matchups.
Deutsches Afrikakorps Included as a separate faction from Wehrmacht, increasing roster variety.

The roster alone does not guarantee balanced matches. Balance depends on patches, map design, player skill, and the current metagame. It does mean a multiplayer buyer is purchasing a system intended for repeated learning and adaptation rather than a one-time campaign.

Co-op considerations

Online co-op is a meaningful middle ground for buyers who want human coordination without the pressure of ranked or highly competitive play. You can practice communication, timing, and combined attacks with friends while still engaging with the same flanking, terrain, and supply decisions that define the solo battles.

The announced PC changes

Relic announced PC update 3.0 for November 5, 2026. Planned changes include visual and audio upgrades, smarter artificial intelligence, multiplayer balance adjustments, new and refreshed maps, and changes to the Italian campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The multiplayer portion of the announcement specifically targets larger team games. It mentions economy and artillery changes and an effort to reduce massed vehicles. The campaign portion mentions adjustments to map resources, town upgrades, and enemy attack waves. These are announced features, not improvements that were confirmed as available on October 13, 2026. A buyer purchasing before November 5 should evaluate the currently shipped PC version rather than treating the announcement as present-day content.

PC versus console: which version should you choose?

Both platform families remain playable, but their support horizons are different. Relic’s official 2024 statement said it would no longer release further routine updates for the Console Edition. It also said servers would receive regular maintenance and that critical fixes could be issued if needed. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions therefore remain available, but they should not be expected to track the PC version’s future content and balance work.

Consideration PC via Steam PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X|S
Release status Released February 23, 2023; ongoing PC support is announced. Available console editions remain playable.
Future routine updates PC update 3.0 was announced for November 5, 2026. Relic said routine console updates would end in 2024.
Server operation Online modes are listed on Steam. Relic said regular server maintenance would continue.
Critical fixes Not specified in the cited announcement. Relic said critical fixes could be issued if needed.
Best for Players prioritizing long-term multiplayer changes, Workshop support, and PC updates. Players who already prefer console and accept a fixed content baseline.

The practical choice is simple: select PC if future balance, map, artificial-intelligence, or campaign adjustments matter to you. Select console when convenience and existing availability matter more than update parity. Do not buy the console edition expecting the announced PC 3.0 changes to arrive there.

What the reception tells you

Steam’s English review snapshot should temper an unconditional recommendation. Overall reviews were Mixed at 62% positive from 13,378 reviews, while recent English reviews were Mixed at 56% positive from 221 reviews, both accessed October 13, 2026. Review totals and percentages can change as more players post ratings, so these figures describe the listing at that date rather than a permanent score.

The pattern fits the game’s design trade-off. Players who value the tactical battles, factions, skirmishes, and online modes have clear reasons to enjoy it. Players who expected a fully polished strategic campaign layer, especially in Italy, have stronger grounds for frustration. Treat the rating as a warning to match the game to your preferred mode, not as a substitute for that decision.

Requirements and performance expectations

Steam publishes system requirements on the current product page. Check those requirements against your computer before buying, especially if you plan to play large multiplayer battles or use Workshop content.

No independent hardware benchmark or performance test is established here. That means the published requirements can tell you whether your system meets the stated target, but they cannot guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, or stability level in every map, faction matchup, or team size. Buyers should avoid treating the requirements as a promise of identical performance across all hardware.

Before purchasing on PC

  1. Open the current Steam listing and compare your processor, graphics hardware, memory, and operating-system version with the published requirements.
  2. Decide whether you are buying for campaigns, skirmishes, PvP, co-op, or a combination. Your preferred mode matters more than the feature count.
  3. If the Italian dynamic campaign is a major reason for buying, account for reports that its strategic opponents can be passive.
  4. If you are buying before November 5, 2026, treat update 3.0 as planned content rather than content already delivered.
  5. Confirm that your internet connection and account setup support the online modes you intend to use.

Before purchasing on console

  1. Confirm that you are buying the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S edition, not a different platform version.
  2. Check the edition and region offered by the retailer; the cited evidence establishes the product and platforms, not current inventory or pricing.
  3. Assume the console version will remain on its existing support path unless Relic announces otherwise.
  4. Buy only if the currently available campaigns, skirmishes, and online functionality meet your needs without relying on future PC updates.

Who should buy Company of Heroes 3?

Buy it when these statements describe you

  • You enjoy real-time tactics where flanking, armor facing, terrain, and line of sight change the result of an engagement.
  • You want online PvP or co-op and are willing to learn a four-faction matchup system.
  • You value repeatable skirmishes as much as, or more than, a perfectly even pair of campaigns.
  • You are choosing PC and want continued update support.
  • You can accept that the Italian strategic map is an ambitious but uneven part of the package.

Wait or skip it when these statements describe you

  • Your main requirement is two equally polished, highly reactive strategic campaigns.
  • You are buying on console specifically for the future PC update schedule.
  • You dislike learning faction matchups or managing units under positional pressure.
  • You require a proven hardware performance profile for your exact system before purchase.
  • You want to rely on a future feature announcement rather than the version available on the day you buy.

How to make the decision in one minute

Your priority Recommendation Reason
Competitive multiplayer PC purchase is the strongest fit. Four factions, PvP, and announced ongoing PC changes support long-term play.
Co-op with friends PC or console, depending on your group’s platform. Both platform paths support the core game, but PC has the longer routine-update horizon.
Traditional solo campaign Consider buying, especially on PC. The North African campaign is the more straightforward solo option, with skirmishes available afterward.
Strategic campaign simulation Buy only with reservations. The Italian map has interesting systems but has been criticized for passive opposition and weak launch polish.
Long-term console ownership Proceed only if the current version is sufficient. Routine console updates ended under Relic’s 2024 policy statement.

Final buying advice

Company of Heroes 3 is not a universal recommendation, but it is a defensible purchase for the right player. Its best material is the battle system: positioning has consequences, factions create different learning paths, and skirmish, PvP, and co-op give the tactical framework room to develop. The solo campaigns add value, but the Italian dynamic map should be treated as an uneven experiment rather than the game’s unquestioned centerpiece.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose PC when continued support is part of the value calculation. Choose console only for the version available now, with no assumption of routine update parity. If those conditions match what you want, the Mixed Steam rating is a reason to set expectations—not a reason to dismiss a game whose tactical battles may be exactly the experience you are seeking.
