Short answer: no—not across the software industry. David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and co-founder of 37signals, says his company has made AI agents its normal way to produce code and treats hand-written code as an exception. That is a reported 37signals practice and Hansson’s forecast, not proof that professional hand coding has ended elsewhere.
What did DHH say at Rails World?
At his Rails World keynote, Hansson said 37signals had gone “pencils down” on writing code by hand as its normal course of business. He described manual coding as an exceptional state—one that should prompt the team to investigate why an agent could not produce the result it wanted. The Pragmatic Engineer reports his remarks; they are not an independent audit of every team or project at the company. The Pragmatic Engineer’s account was originally published and updated on 1 October 2026.
Hansson also made a much broader claim: “Writing code by hand is no longer an economically productive enterprise for the vast majority of programmers working at the vast majority of companies.” The article reports that assertion but does not establish it with representative productivity or employment data. The newsletter issue dated 24 September 2026 frames the question more narrowly: whether hand coding is over “for professional work – at 37signals at least.” The newsletter preview confirms that company-specific framing.
What is changing at 37signals?
The reported workflow shift sits alongside changes to the company’s technology plans. These details describe what The Pragmatic Engineer says 37signals is doing or considering; they are not comparative performance results.
#1 Best Overall
- Agents for ordinary code production: Hansson says agents are now the default, with manual implementation reserved for cases where they do not deliver what the team wants.
- Native mobile apps: The report says 37signals is building native iOS and Android apps, connecting that work to the view that agents make native development more practical for a small team.
- Some backend services in Rust: The article says backend services are moving to Rust for performance reasons and because agents can write “good enough” Rust. It provides no benchmark or independent assessment of that reasoning.
- Rails still used for web applications: The report says the company continues to use Rails for web work, in part because its convention-over-configuration design is considered easy for agents to work with. This is not a claim that 37signals has abandoned Rails.
Why does Hansson call November 24, 2025 a turning point?
Hansson identified 24 November 2025 as his “Kodak Brownie” moment and named Opus 4.5 as the trigger for his personal tipping point. He described the moment as experiencing software creation in partnership with a new form of intelligence. That date records his interpretation of a change in his own outlook; it is not a measured industry-wide inflection point.
He also said, “I have retired from being a professional programmer. I think it was somewhere around 4 to 5 months ago, maybe March.” This is his estimate of when his own role changed, not a statistic about other programmers.

Does this mean hand coding is dead?
No. The story supports a narrower conclusion: one prominent software company says it has made agent-led code production its normal workflow, and its co-founder believes that shift has profound economic consequences. It does not show that hand coding has stopped across the profession or that the same approach suits every company, codebase, or task.
The article juxtaposes Hansson’s confidence with engineering concerns about accepting code without adequate judgment or review. Its examples include an anonymous engineer’s post and interface bugs the author says he observed in Uber Eats. These are anecdotes; they do not measure how common defects are or establish that AI caused every example.
What work remains when agents write more code?
Less direct typing does not transfer responsibility for software to an agent. Engineers still need to decide what to build, assess whether generated changes meet requirements, validate behavior, and remain accountable for what is shipped and operated. The article highlights understanding model limitations, designing validation systems, and maintaining that accountability as continuing engineering work; it does not quantify how much time each requires.
Hansson argues that cheaper code repetition could change the value of abstractions. That is a view about how software design may change when code is cheaper to produce, not evidence that abstractions or human engineering judgment are no longer useful. The reporting supplies no independent, representative study showing that hand coding is economically obsolete for most programmers or companies.

How strong is the evidence behind the debate?
The central evidence is The Pragmatic Engineer’s account of Hansson’s keynote and the author’s analysis, alongside a newsletter preview that confirms the original question and its 37signals-specific qualification. The reporting gives readers a concrete example of one company’s stated direction, but not a controlled comparison of agent-written and hand-written code.

Best Value
- Established by the reporting: Hansson’s statements about 37signals’ workflow and his personal turning point; the reported mobile, Rust, and Rails plans.
- Not established by the reporting: representative effects on productivity, code quality, employment, or the economics of professional programming across companies.
- Best way to read the headline: as shorthand for a company-specific change and a provocative forecast—not as a verified obituary for coding by hand.
