Claude Code can be suitable for private-repository review, but it is not automatically private or risk-free. The tool runs on your machine, while the repository text placed in prompts and the model’s replies travel to the configured provider. Safe use therefore depends on the account policy, retention settings, permissions, network controls, and how you isolate untrusted code.

For proprietary software, the defensible baseline is a commercial/API or enterprise deployment with a written no-training policy, an approved retention period (zero-data-retention where eligible), least-privilege credentials, default approval prompts, and a disposable environment for builds and tests. A consumer account with permissive settings may be useful for low-sensitivity code, but it should not be treated as an enterprise confidentiality control.

What “safe” means in a private-repository review

There are several different risks, and a deployment can address one while leaving another exposed:

  • Confidentiality: source code, tickets, configuration, and secrets may be included in prompts sent outside the workstation.
  • Retention and training: the provider may retain conversations or use them for model improvement under the policy attached to the account and feature.
  • Execution: an agent can be authorized to read additional directories, run shell commands, edit files, contact network services, or call MCP tools.
  • Integrity: a malicious instruction hidden in a README, issue, generated file, or test fixture can influence the agent (prompt injection).
  • Operational privacy: error and usage telemetry can be sent to separate services even when source-code handling is configured appropriately.

“Safe” should therefore mean that you have documented what leaves the workstation, who can retain it, what the agent may do, and how you will detect or recover from an error.

Does Claude Code send private code to Anthropic?

Claude Code executes locally, but it is an agent client that sends prompts and receives model outputs over the network. When a file, diff, command result, or directory listing is placed in a prompt, that material is processed by the configured model provider. A repository is not kept entirely on the workstation simply because the command-line process is local.

The amount of code transmitted depends on the task and context selection. A narrow review of one commit can expose less material than an instruction to inspect the whole tree, follow dependencies, run tests, and read generated artifacts. The client may also send command output, compiler errors, and snippets from files that the agent decides are relevant. Remove secrets and unnecessary proprietary data before starting, and avoid asking for a full-repository dump when a focused path or diff answers the question.

Will Claude train on company source code?

Commercial and API arrangements

Anthropic’s commercial/API documentation states that code and prompts sent to Claude Code are not used to train generative models by default. The same documentation says retained data is not used for model training without express permission. Conversation content is not retained by default except where a particular feature or covered model requires retention. The exact result depends on the contract, product configuration, and any organization-level setting, so obtain the written policy that applies to your account rather than relying on a consumer setting.

Enterprise, Bedrock, and Vertex deployments

Eligible enterprise arrangements can support zero-data-retention (ZDR) controls. ZDR is a contractual or configuration control, not a synonym for “nothing ever leaves the computer”: prompts still have to reach the selected provider to generate a response, and some features may be excluded from ZDR. Confirm which models, logging paths, support workflows, and tools are covered, and whether the request is processed by Anthropic directly or by a cloud provider such as Bedrock or Vertex.

Free, Pro, and Max accounts

Consumer Free, Pro, and Max accounts have separate privacy rules. When a user deletes a conversation, it is removed from history immediately and from backend systems within 30 days, according to the Anthropic Privacy Center (2026). If model improvement is allowed, data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years. Those periods are not an assurance that a company’s source code is suitable for a consumer account; they are the documented consumer-policy outcomes and can differ from commercial controls.

Local session transcripts

Anthropic’s Claude Platform documentation (2026) describes local Claude Code session transcript retention of six years by default under its documented Compliance API model. Treat that as a separate local-record issue: deleting a cloud conversation does not necessarily remove transcripts, shell history, editor logs, caches, or backups on the workstation. Set and enforce a local retention schedule, especially on shared or managed devices.

What Claude Code can do to a repository

Claude Code uses strict read-only permissions by default. It can inspect files and propose actions, but edits and commands require approval in the normal workflow. That default limits accidental changes, yet it is not a complete sandbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings that expand access

  • --add-dir gives the session access to directories outside the repository. Use it only for a specifically required dependency and record the path.
  • Broad allow rules can approve classes of commands or file operations without a fresh human decision. Prefer narrow, task-specific approvals.
  • MCP servers can expose databases, ticket systems, browsers, cloud APIs, or internal tools. Every server becomes another trust and data-flow boundary.
  • --dangerously-skip-permissions removes permission prompts. Anthropic’s CLI reference labels it “Skip permission prompts (use with caution).” Do not use it on a sensitive workstation.

Commands that appear harmless can read environment variables, discover credentials, modify files, install packages, or make network requests. Review the exact command and its working directory before approving it.

Consumer versus commercial and enterprise deployment

The right comparison is governance, not a simple claim that one product name is always safe. Ask the account owner to document each axis before proprietary code is admitted.

Control Consumer Free/Pro/Max Commercial/API Enterprise, Bedrock, or Vertex
Model training Depends on the consumer model-improvement setting; permitted data can be retained in de-identified form. Commercial documentation says no training by default and no use of retained data for training without express permission. Usually governed by a contract and cloud-provider terms; verify the selected model and written no-training commitment.
Deletion and retention Deleted conversations leave history immediately and backend systems within 30 days; up to five years is possible when model improvement is allowed. Conversation content is not retained by default except where a feature or covered model requires it; the contract controls exceptions. ZDR may be available for eligible arrangements; confirm excluded features, support access, and provider logs.
Data residency and provider boundary Account and service routing are controlled by the consumer service; a company-specific residency guarantee is not established here. Set by the commercial contract and service configuration; obtain the actual processing regions. May follow the selected cloud region and provider; the exact boundary is not stated universally and must be confirmed for your tenant.
Permission enforcement Local Claude Code permissions still apply, but the account tier does not replace workstation controls. Same local controls, with organization policy and approved credentials around them. Can be combined with centralized identity, device management, and policy enforcement; implementation varies.
Audit logs Organization-grade audit coverage is not established for every consumer plan. Ask which API, organization, and administrative events are logged and for how long. Enterprise or cloud tooling may provide administrative logs; confirm their retention and export process.
Proxy support Use only where the client and network permit the required destinations. Corporate proxies can monitor required destinations; document allowlisted hosts and TLS inspection policy. Cloud networking and enterprise proxies can centralize egress, subject to the selected provider.
MCP governance Each user-installed server is an additional trust boundary. Define an approved server list, scopes, and secret-handling rules. Central approval, network segmentation, and logging are possible but must be configured.
Execution isolation Use a local VM or devcontainer when code is untrusted. Same isolation requirement; the account policy does not sandbox package scripts. Enterprise controls can support managed environments, but a separate disposable runtime remains prudent for hostile repositories.

The table describes control categories, not a blanket security ranking. A carefully locked-down commercial account can be safer than a poorly configured enterprise tenant, while an enterprise contract cannot make an unreviewed command safe.

A safer workflow for reviewing a private repository

  1. Select the deployment. Prefer a commercial/API or enterprise organization with a written retention and training policy. Verify whether ZDR is enabled, which features are excluded, where requests are processed, and who can access support or audit data.
  2. Prepare the working copy. Remove API keys, signing keys, production credentials, customer exports, and unrelated secrets from the tree and environment. Use read-only credentials wherever possible. Check ignored files, generated artifacts, shell history, and editor caches for accidental exposure.
  3. Start at the repository root. Launch Claude Code in the project directory and do not add parent folders. Avoid --add-dir unless a dependency is genuinely required; if you use it, specify the smallest directory and document why.
  4. Begin in plan mode. Ask for reconnaissance and a proposed review plan before allowing edits, tests, package installation, or network access. A plan makes the intended files and commands visible before execution.
  5. Keep the default permission model. Approve individual reads, commands, and edits. Reject requests that touch credentials, unrelated directories, destructive operations, or unexplained network endpoints. Never use --dangerously-skip-permissions for sensitive work.
  6. Inspect every proposed command. Check the executable, arguments, working directory, redirections, substitutions, package hooks, and network destinations. A command that runs a test can execute a project’s build script or dependency lifecycle hook.
  7. Treat repository text as untrusted. README files, issues, comments, fixtures, generated code, and test data can contain prompt-injection instructions such as “ignore prior rules” or requests to upload secrets. Follow only your explicit review objective and human-approved policy.
  8. Isolate execution. Use a disposable VM or devcontainer for repositories that run builds, tests, package hooks, compilers, external tools, or untrusted scripts. Keep the environment free of production credentials and limit its network access.
  9. Govern MCP. Disable unneeded MCP servers. For an approved server, define the exact tools and data scopes, use short-lived credentials, and review each request as carefully as a shell command.
  10. Control network egress. Route traffic through an approved corporate proxy where required. Allowlist and monitor the documented destinations, and understand what TLS inspection or proxy logging records. If policy requires it, set the documented DISABLE_TELEMETRY option and verify that it is effective.
  11. Review the result outside the agent. Inspect the final diff manually, run security checks in the isolated environment, and confirm that no secrets, unrelated files, or generated artifacts were changed. Preserve the review record according to your organization’s retention policy.

Telemetry and secondary data paths

Operational and error telemetry is a separate consideration from model prompts. Claude Code documentation identifies Statsig and Sentry as recipients of operational or error telemetry. An organization that prohibits such traffic should evaluate the documented DISABLE_TELEMETRY setting, test it on the managed image, and use network controls to verify destinations. A proxy may still record connection metadata even when application telemetry is disabled, so coordinate the setting with the network and privacy teams.

A test command wants to install packages or contact the internet

Do not approve it on the host. Reproduce the task in a disposable VM or devcontainer with a clean cache, restricted egress, and no valuable credentials. Review lockfiles and install scripts before allowing package installation.

A README tells the agent to reveal secrets

Treat the text as data, not authority. Stop the action, preserve the suspicious file for investigation, and continue only with a human-defined plan. Rotate any credential that may have been exposed to the session.

An MCP server requests broad access

Disable it and identify the smallest operation needed. Require an approved server, scoped token, documented owner, and logs before reconnecting it.

Is Enterprise safer than a Pro account?

Enterprise can be safer because it can add contractual no-training terms, ZDR eligibility, centralized identity, auditability, proxy enforcement, and approved MCP governance. Those benefits exist only when the organization enables and verifies them. Enterprise does not prevent a user from approving a dangerous command, installing a malicious MCP server, or placing secrets in a prompt.

Pro may be adequate for public code, synthetic examples, or a private project whose owner accepts the consumer retention policy. It is a poor default for regulated or highly confidential source code when the organization needs contractual controls, defined residency, administrative logs, or a formal deletion process.

Decision checklist for an organization

  • Is the account commercial/API or enterprise, and is the no-training commitment in writing?
  • Is ZDR enabled, and which models, tools, support cases, and telemetry paths are excluded?
  • What is the retention period for provider conversations, local transcripts, logs, backups, and proxy records?
  • Which regions and subprocessors receive prompts and outputs?
  • Are default permission prompts enforced, and are broad allow rules or permission bypasses prohibited?
  • Which directories, credentials, MCP servers, and network destinations are allowed?
  • Is untrusted code executed only in a disposable VM or devcontainer?
  • Can the organization audit commands, diffs, MCP calls, and administrative changes?
  • How are secrets scrubbed before a review, and what is the incident response if one is exposed?

If these questions cannot be answered, classify the deployment as unsuitable for sensitive private repositories until the gaps are resolved.
