Yes—some Chromecast devices still have life left, but support depends on the model. Google ended production of the Chromecast line in 2024 without changing its support policy for existing devices. Its firmware page, last updated June 23, 2026, says first-generation Chromecast no longer receives software or security updates and is no longer eligible for technical support; later models are listed with firmware versions. To decide whether to keep yours, identify its model, check its current firmware, and confirm that the apps you use still work on it.

What Google ending Chromecast production means

Google stopped making Chromecast devices in 2024, after 11 years and more than 100 million devices sold. But ending production did not mean every Chromecast would immediately stop working. Google said the change did not alter its support policy for existing devices, with continued software and security updates for the latest devices. That statement is not a promise that every model will keep receiving updates indefinitely.

Google now positions the Google TV Streamer as the device that replaces Chromecast. The practical question is therefore not simply whether “Chromecast” is supported, but which model you own, what its current support status is, and whether it still works with the services you watch.

Check support for your exact Chromecast model

Google’s firmware page, last updated June 23, 2026, lists different production firmware for several Chromecast models. Google says firmware updates roll out in stages, so the listed version is a dated snapshot—not a guarantee of future releases or proof that every device has already received it.

How to check for a Chromecast update

Chromecast with Google TV

  1. On the TV, open Settings > System > About > System update.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. Google says updates typically install automatically and are released in stages.

The system update option does not appear in the Google Home app.

Cast-only Chromecast models

In Google Home, open the Chromecast device’s settings and technical information to check its Cast firmware version. Compare the version with the entry for your exact model on Google’s Chromecast firmware and release-notes page. Because releases are staged, a device may not receive a listed version at the same time as others.

Will an old Chromecast still work with your apps?

Support and app compatibility are separate issues. A device may still turn on and accept casts even if Google no longer provides updates, while a streaming service can stop supporting that model independently.

TechRadar reported on May 24, 2026, that Google had resolved a casting issue affecting some first-generation Chromecast devices. The report also noted that the first-generation model had been unsupported since 2023 and that Peacock no longer worked on it. That example does not establish compatibility for other services: check the current support information for the specific app you want to use, and test it on your device.

When to keep your Chromecast—and when to replace it

Keep it if it still meets your needs

  • Your model works with the apps you use.
  • Streaming performance and reliability are acceptable for your TV and network.
  • You do not need features offered by a newer device, such as an on-screen Google TV interface or Ethernet.

Consider replacing it if it no longer works well

  • Your essential apps have dropped support for the model.
  • Performance or reliability has become unacceptable, particularly on the unsupported first-generation device.
  • You want a voice remote, a built-in Google TV experience, or newer connectivity and smart-home features.

Google announced the Google TV Streamer on August 6, 2024, as the Chromecast replacement. Google’s announcement described a faster processor, double the memory and 32GB of storage compared with the previous Chromecast generation, plus 4K HDR with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet, Matter connectivity, and a built-in Thread border router. These are Google’s stated specifications, not results from an independent speed test. Check current specifications, prices, and availability in your region before buying.
