Research reviews have reported associations between bisphenol A (BPA) exposure and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. That does not establish that BPA causes either condition. The evidence is largely observational, and studies have important limits in how they measure exposure and determine what came first.
What does research say about BPA and diabetes?
Reviews of human studies report an association between BPA exposure and diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled observational studies comparing people in the highest urinary BPA groups with those in the lowest. It reported an odds ratio of 1.47 for diabetes (95% confidence interval 1.21–1.80). This describes an association within the studies analyzed; it is not an estimate of an individual’s absolute chance of developing diabetes.
That review covered 33 observational studies, including five prospective studies. Among the cross-sectional studies it assessed, seven of eight reported a positive association between BPA and diabetes. The review’s findings reflect its included studies and search period, not a measurement of risk for people today.

A 2023 umbrella review brought together 14 reports of systematic reviews with meta-analyses and searched the literature through July 12, 2023. It identified reported associations with type 2 diabetes, among other outcomes. A separate umbrella review published in 2024 likewise reported an association with type 2 diabetes. These reviews summarize existing studies; they do not turn observational findings into proof of cause and effect.

Is BPA associated with heart disease?
There is epidemiological evidence linking urinary BPA measurements with cardiovascular outcomes, but it does not demonstrate that BPA causes heart disease. A 2020 analysis examined 11,857 U.S. adults in NHANES data from 2003–2016 and reported an adjusted association between urinary BPA and cardiovascular disease. Its meta-analysis of five eligible studies included 22,878 subjects. The authors noted that earlier evidence had been insufficient, and the analysis remains evidence of association rather than causation.
The term “cardiovascular disease” covers a range of outcomes; it should not be treated as interchangeable with a specific diagnosis such as coronary heart disease. The 2015 review, for example, reported an odds ratio of 1.41 for hypertension (95% confidence interval 1.12–1.79) in its pooled comparison of the highest and lowest urinary BPA groups. Hypertension is a cardiovascular risk factor, not the same outcome as heart disease.

The 2023 and 2024 umbrella reviews also reported associations between BPA exposure and cardiovascular disease. These broad syntheses add context, but their conclusions depend on the underlying studies and their limitations.
Why the evidence does not prove BPA causes these diseases
Many studies in this area are cross-sectional: they measure BPA exposure and health status at roughly the same time. Such designs generally cannot establish whether exposure came before a disease, and they may not adequately separate BPA from other factors associated with both exposure and health.

Exposure measurement is another challenge. BPA is commonly assessed using urine samples, and a single measurement may not represent a person’s exposure over a longer period. A 2014 systematic review found inconsistent results and highlighted both the frequent use of cross-sectional designs and reliance on one-time exposure measurements. It judged causal claims unsubstantiated based on the evidence it reviewed. A later meta-analysis also called for more prospective cohort studies to clarify potential causal links.
- Association: BPA exposure and a health outcome appear together more often than expected in a study or pooled analysis.
- Causation: Evidence shows that BPA exposure itself contributes to the outcome, rather than merely tracking with other influences.
The reviews described here support the first statement, not a settled conclusion on the second. More prospective research with repeated exposure measurements would help clarify whether there is a causal relationship.

What FDA says about BPA in food-contact materials
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes BPA as a chemical used in certain food-contact materials. Its ongoing safety review, according to the agency, supports currently approved uses in food containers and packaging. This is the FDA’s regulatory assessment of those approved uses; it is distinct from the epidemiological question of whether BPA exposure causes diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

A 2023 review identifies consumption of BPA-contaminated food as a common exposure route. Neither the existence of that route nor FDA’s assessment, by itself, proves or disproves a causal link between BPA and disease. The agency’s statement concerns currently approved food-contact uses, not every possible exposure scenario.

- Human evidence reviews have reported associations between BPA exposure and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes.
