There is no reliable evidence that Bing Distill is operating in 2026. A former contributor says the service shut down in May 2018, while reports of invitations to a Distill beta appeared in 2019. Those reports establish historical invitation activity, not a currently available Microsoft service.
What Bing Distill was
Bing Distill was a Microsoft community-answer feature connected to questions people asked through Bing. Microsoft’s June 2015 news archive lists “Bing Distill and Bing Listens give students and teachers at E2 ways to get their ideas to Bing,” confirming the feature’s existence and its education-event context.
A contemporaneous post reproducing Bing-team copy described Distill as invitation-only. Participants could respond to questions people were asking Bing and vote on answers. The archive is Microsoft’s primary confirmation of the name and event; the detailed description of those user functions comes from reproduced Microsoft wording rather than a full Microsoft product manual.
Is Bing Distill still available?
The most specific shutdown claim comes from James Lenihan III, who identifies himself as a former Microsoft Bing Distill contributor. In a self-published LinkedIn profile, he says the service was shut down in May 2018. That is firsthand testimony, but it is not an official Microsoft closure announcement.

The timeline is complicated by two OnMSFT reports from 2019. An August report said the website was live and that people could request an invitation. An October report said invitations were being sent for a beta. This shows that a Distill-branded invitation or beta flow was reported in 2019; it does not prove uninterrupted operation after May 2018 or establish that the service survives today.
| Date | What the available record shows | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| June 2015 | Microsoft’s news archive names Bing Distill and places it in an education-event context. | A complete public product specification or open access. |
| May 2018 | A former contributor reports that Distill shut down. | An official Microsoft closure notice. |
| August 2019 | OnMSFT reports that the website was live and invitation requests were possible. | That the service had remained live continuously since 2018 or remains live now. |
| October 2019 | OnMSFT reports that beta invitations were being sent. | Current availability in 2026. |
| 2023 | A Microsoft guide uses “distill” in its ordinary sense when describing newer Bing. | That the historical Bing Distill community feature was revived. |
What the 2019 invitation wording means
OnMSFT reproduced an invitation email signed by the Bing Distill Team. It described the service this way: “Bing Distill is a community where people come together to create high-quality, accurate, unbiased, and trustworthy answers to questions millions of people ask.”

- It remains our goal to earn your trust through the traditional way we do business

That sentence is institutional invitation copy, not a measured statistic about users or question volume and not evidence of present-day availability. The word “millions” should not be read as a published usage count.

Old invitation pages are not status pages
A page or email from the 2019 beta can continue to appear in search results after an invitation program ends. Its existence demonstrates that invitations were reported at that time, not that a working sign-up or contributor system is available now.

“Distill” in newer Bing documentation
Microsoft’s 2023 guide uses “distill” as a normal verb for summarizing information. That language refers to newer Bing’s ability to summarize content; it is not the proper name of the older community feature.
What can be stated confidently
- Bing Distill was a named Microsoft community feature associated with questions asked through Bing.
- Microsoft’s June 2015 archive confirms the feature’s existence and its connection to an education event.
- A former contributor reports a May 2018 shutdown, but no official Microsoft closure announcement has been identified.
- OnMSFT reported Distill invitation and beta activity in 2019.
- The available evidence does not verify an active Bing Distill service in 2026.
Bottom line for people looking for Bing Distill
Treat Bing Distill as a historical or possibly discontinued community project, not as a confirmed live Microsoft service. A 2019 invitation report and later uses of the word “distill” in Bing documentation are insufficient to establish current operation. Unless Microsoft publishes a current status page or a verifiable working endpoint, the careful answer to “Is Bing Distill alive?” is: not verified.
