North Carolina’s sports-betting market expanded rapidly, and calls to the state problem-gambling hotline more than tripled between 2021 and 2025. That combination raises a fair question about whether support services are keeping up. The available figures do not establish that treatment capacity has been exceeded—or how much sports betting contributed to the rise in calls.

What the figures show—and what they do not

Legal online sports wagering began in North Carolina on March 11, 2024, according to the state’s launch announcement. In June 2025, NCDHHS reported that bettors placed more than $6.1 billion in paid bets during the first 12 months, citing the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. This is the total value wagered, not operator revenue or state tax receipts. NCDHHS’s report provides the attribution and period.

Separately, NC Health News reported in March 2026 that state data showed calls to the problem-gambling hotline more than tripled between 2021 and 2025. The report summary does not give the underlying annual call totals. A rise in calls measures contacts with the helpline; it does not count unique callers, diagnoses, or people unable to obtain treatment. NC Health News’s report does not establish that legal sports betting caused the full increase.

These are distinct measures: wagering volume, requests for help, diagnosed gambling disorder, and unmet treatment need. They may be related, but one cannot be substituted for another.

Is the support system under strain?

The call trend is a reason to examine service capacity, not proof that the system is overloaded. The sources available here do not provide current wait times, referral completion rates, provider caseloads, treatment-slot utilization, or a count of people who could not get care. Without those indicators, the extent of any strain is not established.

To assess whether capacity is keeping pace, useful year-by-year measures would include:

  • Calls received, answered, abandoned, and referred, with comparable definitions across years.
  • How many referrals result in an appointment and how long callers wait for one.
  • Provider availability by location and by in-person or telehealth care.
  • Current caseloads, open treatment slots, and reported unmet need.
  • Whether funding and the provider network changed as demand changed.

NCDHHS said in 2024 that it was working with providers and the helpline to handle a possible increase in calls as sports betting launched. That shows the state anticipated added demand; it does not show whether later capacity kept pace. The department’s statement is available in its March 11, 2024 release.

What North Carolina’s support program offers

The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program says it supports prevention, education, outreach, and treatment across the state. Its program page lists the NC Problem Gambling Helpline at 877-718-5543. See the NCDHHS program page for current contact information.

NCDHHS’s fiscal year 2024–25 plan described the helpline as a 24/7, no-cost, confidential service with English, Spanish, and other-language access. It said trained master’s-level clinicians assess callers’ needs and refer them to no-cost treatment options. Because those operational details come from a historical plan, verify them with the program when seeking current service availability. The plan also described more than 70 providers offering in-person or telehealth treatment, alongside remote treatment options and peer support; that figure is not a verified current provider count. The 2024–25 plan describes the network.

These options differ in purpose and format: the helpline provides contact, assessment, and referrals; clinical treatment may be available in person or by telehealth; peer support offers a non-clinical form of support. Ask the helpline or provider about current cost, language access, modality, and local availability before arranging care.

Prevention, estimates, and funding context

State rules also address responsible-gambling practices by licensed operators. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission says operators must verify users are at least 21, train employees, include gambling-addiction information in betting advertising, and provide responsible-gaming tools. Reality checks and links to support resources are examples described on the commission’s responsible-gaming page.

In 2024, NCDHHS cited estimates that approximately 5.5% of North Carolina adults and 10% of youth experience problems related to gambling. The department also said each affected person may have another seven to 20 people in their family or community affected. These are estimates reported by NCDHHS; the release does not explain their methodology or measurement date, so they should not be treated as a current prevalence survey. The department’s release provides the figures.

NC Health News reported a state allocation of $2 million per year for gambling addiction education, prevention, and treatment. That figure describes the allocation reported in 2026; it should not be read as the entire support budget without a fuller accounting of current appropriations. The report discusses the allocation.
