No—Apple has not announced that it is removing ChatGPT from Siri. Apple says the next generation of its Apple Foundation Models was built in collaboration with Google and Gemini, shaping the foundation of its newer Siri AI. At the same time, Apple and OpenAI support pages still describe ChatGPT as an optional extension for Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. The change is about Siri’s underlying model direction, not a confirmed end to the ChatGPT integration.

What changed between Apple and OpenAI?

Apple’s product announcements describe two different roles. ChatGPT was introduced as an optional service Siri could call for selected requests. Apple’s newer Siri AI has a separate foundation-model story: Apple says its next generation of Apple Foundation Models was developed in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. The announcements do not establish that Gemini replaces ChatGPT as an extension, or that Apple has ended its relationship with OpenAI.

June 2024: ChatGPT became an optional extension

OpenAI announced on June 10, 2024, that ChatGPT would be integrated into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Siri could suggest ChatGPT for certain requests, and users would be asked before questions, documents, or photos were sent. ChatGPT was also planned for systemwide Writing Tools and image generation. OpenAI said the integration would use GPT-4o, work without an account, and let subscribers connect their accounts to use paid features. OpenAI’s partnership announcement

March 2025: Apple described the integration as available

Apple’s March 31, 2025, release update said Siri could suggest ChatGPT for certain requests and return its response, and users could access it in Writing Tools. Apple described the feature as optional. For use without a ChatGPT account, Apple said OpenAI would not store requests or use them to train its models, and that IP addresses would be obscured. June–September 2026: Apple announced a new Siri AI direction

On June 8, 2026, Apple introduced Siri AI as a more capable assistant with personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and the ability to take actions across apps. Apple said developer testing was beginning and a user beta would follow later in 2026. On September 14, Apple announced that rollout was beginning in English beta and said its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and Gemini. Apple said the models run on-device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s September 2026 announcement

Availability described Apple announced an English beta rollout beginning September 14, 2026, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish planned for the following month. Apple and OpenAI support documentation continues to describe setup and use; availability depends on supported devices, languages, regions, and ChatGPT service availability.

Is ChatGPT still available in Siri?

Apple’s iPhone guide and OpenAI’s help documentation still explain how to connect ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence features, including Siri. That is evidence that the extension remains documented—not a guarantee that every feature is available on every device, in every language, or in every region. Apple says the ChatGPT extension is available only where the ChatGPT app and service are available. Apple’s iPhone guide to Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT and OpenAI’s setup and usage instructions

So the claim that “Apple ended ChatGPT in Siri” goes beyond what the published product information supports. Apple’s model collaboration with Google and Gemini does not, by itself, establish exclusivity, contract terms, private negotiations, or termination of an Apple–OpenAI agreement.

How to connect or manage ChatGPT on iPhone

  1. Open Settings. Choose Apple Intelligence & Siri, then select ChatGPT. Labels and availability may vary with the installed iOS version.
  2. Set up the extension. Follow the prompts to continue without an account or sign in. OpenAI says signing in is required for conversations to be saved to ChatGPT history.
  3. Review confirmation controls. OpenAI’s help instructions describe turning off Confirm ChatGPT Requests to let Siri send questions without asking. Siri still asks permission before sending files. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes different controls for Siri AI beta: users must first ask ChatGPT before a prompt, photo, or file is sent. Follow the wording shown on your device and check the guidance for your OS version.
  4. Disable the extension if you do not want to use it. Return to the ChatGPT settings under Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn it off. Apple’s guide covers setup, disabling, and controls.

What to know about privacy and accounts

Privacy behavior depends on how the extension is configured. Apple’s March 2025 statement about requests not being stored or used for model training applies to use without a ChatGPT account. OpenAI says signing in is needed to save chats to ChatGPT history. These statements describe different account conditions; do not assume the no-account handling applies unchanged after signing in. Check the current Apple and OpenAI support instructions for the options on your device.

Which devices, languages, and regions are supported?

There is no single compatibility answer for every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple says support depends on capable hardware, language, and region, and the ChatGPT extension is available only where ChatGPT service is available. In its June 8, 2026, Siri AI announcement, Apple listed iPhone 16 models or later and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, alongside other Apple devices; its September announcement described Siri AI rollout beginning in English beta, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish planned for the following month. Because beta availability and compatibility can change, consult Apple’s current device and language information before relying on a specific model or locale.
