No. An audio interface is a broader device that connects audio equipment to a computer or recording system; many interfaces include microphone preamps as one of their components. A preamp boosts a microphone’s low-level signal, while the interface also handles connections, audio conversion, monitoring and output routing.
What does a preamp do, and what does an interface do?
A microphone produces a relatively weak signal. A mic preamp raises that signal to a usable level for recording or amplification. Focusrite describes a mic preamp as equipment that increases a microphone’s signal so it can be properly recorded or amplified (Focusrite’s mic-preamp explainer).
An audio interface is the larger input-and-output device in the recording chain. It connects microphones and other audio sources to a computer, converts incoming analog audio to digital audio, and provides outputs for headphones, speakers or other equipment. Many interfaces contain mic preamps, but the terms are not interchangeable.

A typical path is microphone → interface mic preamp → analog-to-digital conversion → computer or recording software. The preamp provides the gain the microphone signal needs; the interface carries the signal into and out of the digital recording system. The exact circuitry and routing vary by interface model.

Do you need a separate preamp with an audio interface?
Usually, you can plug a microphone into an interface’s mic input and use its built-in preamp. Consider an external preamp only if you need additional gain for your setup or are deliberately seeking a particular tonal character. It is an optional piece of equipment, not a required addition to every interface.
For a typical connection, plug the microphone into the external preamp with an XLR cable, then connect the preamp’s line-level output to an appropriate line input on the interface. Follow the interface manual’s routing and gain instructions: leaving the interface’s mic-preamp gain in the signal path can result in the signal being amplified twice. Focusrite outlines this connection in its external-preamp setup guidance.

Does an interface’s line input bypass its mic preamp?
Not necessarily. The label “line input” does not, by itself, prove that the signal bypasses a variable-gain preamp stage. In Focusrite’s documentation, most of its combo inputs pass line signals through a variable-gain preamp. The company identifies the ISA C8X as an exception, with dedicated TRS line inputs that bypass the preamp and variable-gain stage. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for every interface. Check the manual for the exact model you own.

Mic, line and instrument inputs: why the distinction matters
Microphones, line-level devices and instruments can produce different signal levels. A mic-level signal generally needs preamp gain, while line-level and instrument signals call for the corresponding input mode. Focusrite’s guide to audio signal levels explains these categories.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Mic input: for a microphone-level signal that needs preamp gain.
- Line input: for line-level equipment, subject to the interface’s actual circuit and routing.
- Instrument input: for compatible instrument-level sources, such as a directly connected electric guitar or bass.
Use the input type specified by the interface manufacturer. Focusrite warns that feeding a line-level signal into an XLR mic input can overload the preamp, and that phantom power should not be applied to line or instrument outputs. Consult the manufacturer’s connection guidance and the manual for your specific interface before connecting equipment or enabling phantom power.

- Monitoring and outputs: Consider the headphone, speaker and routing options your recording setup requires.
- Line-input behavior: If you plan to use an external preamp or other line-level equipment, verify whether the relevant line input bypasses or passes through variable-gain preamp circuitry.
For one example of an integrated design, Focusrite’s Scarlett 2i2 4th Generation product page describes two mic preamps and front line/instrument inputs. It is an example of an interface with built-in preamps, not evidence that all interfaces share the same features or routing.
