Usually, for basic firewalling and ordinary Home Assistant use—provided the exact Topton configuration has enough RAM, suitable network ports, and virtualization support. The J4125 name alone cannot guarantee performance: Topton configurations differ, and the available official guidance does not include a benchmark of this exact Proxmox, OPNsense, and Home Assistant combination. Treat it as a plausible low-demand setup, not a proven fit for every internet speed or OPNsense feature set.
When a J4125 is likely to be enough
The combination is plausible if you will run OPNsense for routine routing and firewall duties, use Home Assistant for typical smart-home workloads, and have enough memory and storage for the Proxmox host plus both virtual machines. OPNsense’s guidance lists a reasonable hardware profile of a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB RAM, and a 40 GB SSD. Its recommended profile is a 1.5 GHz multicore processor, 8 GB RAM, and a 120 GB SSD. Those are OPNsense profiles, not a complete resource budget for a Proxmox host running two guests. OPNsense hardware sizing and setup
OPNsense’s sizing table associates its recommended profile with throughput ranges starting at 350–750+ Mbps. That is vendor sizing guidance—not a measured result for a J4125 Topton appliance. Actual demand depends on throughput and enabled features. Intrusion detection or prevention, proxy caching, high-user-count captive portals, and large connection state tables can increase resource use. If you plan to use those features, or require high throughput or heavy VPN encryption, leave headroom and test the real configuration rather than relying on the processor model alone.
What to verify on the exact Topton unit
“Topton J4125” does not identify one consistent hardware configuration. A J4125 appliance datasheet example lists four cores and four threads, speeds up to 2.70 GHz, Intel VT-x with EPT, and VT-d—but it describes a particular appliance, not every Topton board or BIOS. A separate Topton reseller listing describes support for up to 16 GB of DDR4 and mSATA plus 2.5-inch SATA storage. These records must not be combined into a presumed specification for your unit. - Virtualization: Confirm Intel VT-x is available and enabled in the BIOS. Proxmox calls for a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with Intel VT or AMD-V. If you want to pass physical devices through to guests, verify VT-d and the board’s IOMMU support as well. CPU support alone does not prove that a particular motherboard exposes usable IOMMU groups. Proxmox VE hardware requirements
- Memory: Check installed RAM and the actual board’s upgrade limit. Proxmox lists 2 GB as a minimum for the host OS and services, in addition to memory for guests; that is a floor, not a sensible all-in target for this arrangement. Reserve memory for Proxmox first, then size OPNsense for its intended features and Home Assistant for its integrations and add-ons.
- Storage: Confirm the installed drive type, capacity, and condition. Proxmox recommends fast storage such as SSDs, and OPNsense’s reasonable profile specifies a 40 GB SSD. The advertised storage options on one listing do not establish what is installed in another unit.
- Network interfaces: Check the number, chipset, and speed of the actual NICs against your WAN and LAN design. One example J4125 appliance datasheet lists four Intel i211-AT Gigabit ports and a maximum of 8 GB RAM; those details do not establish the ports or memory ceiling of a separate Topton model.
- Thermals and recovery: Consider whether the fanless enclosure can sustain your intended workload and how you will restore service if the host needs maintenance or fails. The cited product records do not establish sustained thermals or performance for your machine.
Plan memory and storage for the host and both guests
Do not assign all installed RAM to the virtual machines. Proxmox needs memory for its own OS and services, while OPNsense and Home Assistant need their own allocations. OPNsense’s virtual-install guide lists a minimum of 3 GB RAM and an 8 GB virtual disk; its general reasonable profile is higher, at 4 GB RAM and a 40 GB SSD. The virtual-install minimum should not be mistaken for a comfortable allocation for every feature or workload. OPNsense virtual and cloud-based installation
Use the general Proxmox guidance of at least 2 GB for the host as a minimum reference, then leave additional room for both guests and normal operation. There is no single combined memory figure in these sources that guarantees a good result: the right allocation depends on your installed RAM, OPNsense features, and Home Assistant integrations. Home Assistant officially supports running on a mini PC or in a virtual machine alongside other services. Home Assistant hardware guidance

Configure OPNsense networking before replacing your router
OPNsense can run on hypervisors that support FreeBSD, and Proxmox is KVM-based. Its virtual-install notes advise disabling hardware offloading at Interfaces > Settings. You still need to configure and validate the guest’s virtual NICs and Proxmox bridges, or any planned physical NIC passthrough, before moving your household’s only router onto the VM. The cited guidance does not establish that every NIC chipset or passthrough arrangement will work equally well.

Account for the shared failure point
With both services on one Proxmox host, a host failure or maintenance shutdown takes down OPNsense and Home Assistant together. That is a trade-off of colocating the services, not a measured weakness specific to the J4125. Back up guest configurations and have a recovery plan before replacing a standalone router; otherwise, a routine host problem can also interrupt internet access and smart-home control.
Home Assistant radios are optional
Home Assistant itself does not require a Zigbee or Thread radio. If you want one, Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 supports Zigbee 3.0 and Thread and connects over USB-C. Home Assistant says the device must be dedicated to either Zigbee or Thread; it cannot operate both simultaneously. For a Home Assistant VM, pass the USB device through to the guest.
