Yes. Samsung Galaxy smartphones run Android, with Samsung’s One UI interface and software experience layered on top. One UI changes how Galaxy software looks and works, but it does not replace Android as the phone’s underlying operating system.
How Android and One UI work together
Think of the software as two related layers, not two competing operating systems:
| Layer | What it does | Who supplies it |
|---|---|---|
| Android | The underlying operating system that runs the phone. | The Android platform; Samsung Galaxy phones run it. |
| One UI | Samsung’s interface and software experience, built on top of Android. | Samsung. |
Samsung describes One UI as software unique to Samsung that operates in addition to Android. That is why a Galaxy phone is still an Android phone even when its menus and features look different from those on other Android devices. (Samsung UK: One UI)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs One UI a separate operating system or an app?
No. One UI is Samsung’s Galaxy software layer, not a separate operating system that replaces Android. Samsung says One UI is designed for Galaxy devices; it is not a standalone app that can be installed on a phone made by another manufacturer. (Samsung UK: One UI)

Which Android and One UI version does a Galaxy phone use?
There is no single version that applies to every Samsung owner. Versions and eligible features depend on the model, and updates may arrive at different times depending on the country or region and carrier. Samsung’s Canadian support information also says settings and features may vary by model, carrier, and network connection, and that supported models and schedules can change. (Samsung Canada: One UI 8 support)
Version details are time-sensitive. As of October 7, 2026, Samsung UK’s One UI guide identifies One UI 9.0 as based on Android 17. It says One UI 9.0 debuted in July 2026 with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, then rolled out to the Galaxy S26 series in September 2026. Those release details do not mean every eligible phone has received the update; availability can vary by model, region, and carrier. (Samsung UK: One UI)

Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 interim report lists the Galaxy S26 series platform as Android 16 and One UI 8.5. That describes the platform recorded in the report; it should not be treated as a statement of the current installed software on every S26 device after later releases and rollouts. What Samsung’s update commitment does—and does not—mean
On February 9, 2022, Samsung announced up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades for select Galaxy devices, covering select S, Z, A, and tablet models. “Up to” and “select” matter: the announcement is not a universal support-duration promise for every Galaxy phone or tablet. Check the current support information for the exact model rather than applying the commitment to the whole Galaxy range. (Samsung Newsroom, February 9, 2022)
