It can be worth it if the groceries you regularly buy cost less at your local Sam’s Club, you use the package sizes before food spoils, and those savings exceed the membership fee plus any extra travel or delivery costs. There is no evidence here of a universal saving or that Sam’s Club’s fresh food is better quality than nearby alternatives, so the best answer comes from comparing your own usual basket.
What the membership costs in 2026
Sam’s Club’s annual fees increased effective May 1, 2026. Axios reported that Club costs $60 a year, up from $50, and Plus costs $120, up from $110. Plus members can earn up to $750 a year in Sam’s Cash rewards, up from $500. These are reported membership terms; check Sam’s Club for current details before joining. Axios reported the fee and rewards changes.
Which fresh groceries can you buy?
Walmart’s FY2026 annual report lists grocery categories that include meat, bakery, deli, and produce. That company-level list confirms the categories, but it does not establish what a particular club stocks, how fresh its products are, or how its quality compares with local supermarkets. Calculate whether Club pays for itself
For Club, your target is more than $60 in net savings over a year. Compare the amount you would actually use—not just the sticker price or the package’s total weight—with what the same groceries cost at a nearby store.

- Choose a small, realistic basket. Use items you already buy regularly, such as produce, meat, dairy, or bakery goods. Check prices in your area rather than relying on a general claim that bulk shopping is cheaper.
- Compare usable-unit prices. Work out the cost per pound, item, or serving, then account for the portion your household can consume before it spoils. A larger pack is not a saving if some of it goes unused.
- Include the cost of getting the groceries. Account for extra driving or any pickup or delivery charges. Subtract expected food waste as well as those costs from the apparent price savings.
- Check the annual result. If the remaining savings from purchases you expect to make exceed $60, Club may be worthwhile for your grocery habits. If they do not, the membership does not pay for itself on those groceries alone.
No current local price basket or like-for-like fresh-food quality study establishes how much a typical household saves. Your own comparison is therefore more useful than a national or companywide sales figure.
Choose between Club and Plus based on services you will use
Plus costs $60 more each year than Club at the reported 2026 fees. Consider paying that difference only if benefits you expect to use make up for it. Sam’s Club’s membership benefits page lists these pickup and delivery terms:

Delivery and pickup eligibility can vary by area. If you frequently order eligible baskets over $50, the delivery benefit may matter; if you usually shop in person or use pickup for larger orders, it may not justify the higher tier. Count Sam’s Cash only if your purchases qualify and you expect to redeem it; the maximum reward is not the same as guaranteed grocery savings.

Delivery from Club
Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club item prices match in-club and curbside prices. Some weighted products, including fresh meat and certain bakery and cheese items, are priced by actual weight; the online listing shows a maximum price. Check the Delivery from Club details and confirm local eligibility and the final weighted-item price.

Instacart
Instacart is a separate delivery route. Sam’s Club says nonmembers can order through Instacart, while members who enter their membership number get lower prices than nonmembers. Sam’s Club’s help page also says Instacart online prices are higher than in-club prices, delivery fees may apply, and Instacart orders do not earn Sam’s Cash. Shopping as a guest

A practical decision rule
- Club is a better fit if your regular, usable grocery savings exceed the $60 annual fee after travel, delivery, and likely waste are included.
- Plus is a better fit if the additional $60 over Club is outweighed by pickup or delivery benefits you will actually use, plus any Sam’s Cash you qualify for and will redeem.
- Neither may be worth it for groceries if your local comparison shows little net saving, package sizes exceed what your household can use, or trips and fees erase the price difference.
