A revived BlackBerry Passport can be worth buying as a collectible or a limited Wi-Fi device if you specifically want its physical keyboard and accept discontinued software support. It is a poor choice as a dependable everyday phone: BlackBerry says legacy services ended on January 4, 2022, and affected devices—including the Passport—may no longer reliably handle data, calls, SMS, or emergency calls. Before paying, verify the exact model, confirm it works with your carrier, test the individual handset, and make sure the services you need still function.
Is a revived BlackBerry Passport worth buying?
It depends on what you expect it to do. A Passport may suit a collector, a nostalgia purchase, or someone who wants a physical keyboard for limited offline or Wi-Fi use. It is not a sensible default for a primary phone if you depend on reliable calls, emergency calling, current apps, or ongoing software and service support.
BlackBerry’s end-of-life notice, updated December 22, 2021, set January 4, 2022 as the termination date for legacy BlackBerry services. BlackBerry warned that devices using the affected services and software over carrier or Wi-Fi connections might no longer reliably provide data, phone calls, SMS, or 9-1-1 functionality; the Passport is among the named devices. The shutdown also affects legacy services and applications such as hosted email and BlackBerry Link/Blend functionality.

That warning does not establish that every feature on every handset has stopped working. It does mean you should not treat past functionality, an old app listing, or a seller’s “works” claim as proof that a particular service remains usable today. Test the exact features you intend to use before buying.

Will a BlackBerry Passport still work on my carrier?
There is no universal yes. Compatibility depends on the exact Passport variant, the carrier’s current network and activation policies, the service plan, and the phone’s condition. The Passport user guide says a device’s ability to connect to a listed network does not guarantee a connection; the service plan also matters. A supported-band list or the word “unlocked” is not enough to establish that your carrier will activate the phone or provide working voice, SMS, and data.
Passport variants should not be treated as interchangeable. The available FCC-hosted safety sheet identifies SQW100-1, while the AT&T Passport guide is for SQW100-3. Verify the number on the phone itself and ask your carrier about that exact model and IMEI. The available information does not establish current compatibility for every carrier, country, or Passport variant.

- Find the model number under Settings > About or on the device label. Compare it with the model the carrier confirms it can activate.
- Ask the carrier to check the phone’s IMEI and confirm activation and voice, SMS, and data service in your area. Do not assume that an unlocked handset is accepted.
- If possible, put an active SIM for your intended carrier in the phone. Place and receive a call, send and receive a text, and load a webpage.
- On the handset, inspect Settings > About > Network for network status. Treat this as a check of the device’s reported connection, not a substitute for confirming service with the carrier.
If dependable emergency calling matters, do not rely on a Passport unless your carrier confirms current support and you have tested the phone. BlackBerry’s end-of-life warning specifically includes emergency-calling reliability.

Confirm the exact handset and variant
Ask for the model number and clear photos of the front, back, ports, and model markings. Request a live demonstration or a return window rather than relying on listing photos. Check that the IMEI shown in the phone’s settings matches the listing information, then have the carrier check it before purchase.

Test the screen, keyboard, ports, and hardware
Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels, and burn-in, and test touch response across the display. Type using every physical key; try the trackpad gestures. Test both cameras, microphones, speakers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and SIM detection. Connect the charger and check that the micro-USB port is not loose. Look over the casing for impact damage. These checks establish the condition of the specific used handset; no general description can certify a marketplace unit.
Check battery life and charging
Ask the seller to demonstrate the phone unplugged and show that it holds charge after a restart. Confirm that charging works consistently with the included cable and a known-good power source. Battery-saving settings—such as lowering brightness, limiting synchronization, and turning off radios when they are not in use—may reduce drain, as described in the AT&T Passport battery guidance. They cannot restore capacity to a worn battery, so assess the actual unit rather than relying on its original specifications or historic battery estimates.
Test the software and services you actually need
Make a short list of essential services—such as email, maps, messaging, banking, authentication, or work access—and test each one on the offered phone before paying. BlackBerry’s shutdown notice says legacy infrastructure and applications may have limited or unreliable functionality. Do not depend on old app-store availability, sideloaded apps, or unsupported hosted accounts for essential tasks.
Review the transaction terms
Compare the handset’s condition, included charger, proof of ownership, return terms, and total price. Prefer a seller who allows a SIM test or offers a meaningful return period. No current market-price survey establishes a fair price for a Passport, so check live listings for comparable models and condition rather than relying on a fixed price claim. A high asking price is difficult to justify unless you specifically value the phone as a collectible.

How should I compare Passport listings—or a Passport with a current phone?
For two Passport listings, compare the same factors side by side. A cheaper listing may be the worse purchase if its model variant is unverified, battery is weak, or return protection is absent.
