Usually, no. For US buyers, PlayStation Direct lists a new 2 TB PS5 Pro at $899 (checked October 7, 2026). A refurbished unit priced above that has to earn the premium with something specific in writing: a stronger warranty, a generous return window, or accessories you would otherwise buy separately. A vague “like new” label does not count.
Start with the current new PS5 Pro price
Sony’s US PlayStation Direct page lists the PS5 Pro at $899, and the product page identifies it as the 2 TB model. Prices and stock change, so check it again right before you buy. Any refurbished offer should be measured against that figure, using the delivered total with tax and shipping on both sides.

Compare like with like. Sony describes the PS5 Pro as all-digital, with the disc drive and vertical stand sold separately. If a refurbished listing includes a disc drive or stand, price those add-ons into the comparison. If it doesn’t, don’t treat the listing as a bargain or a premium until you know what the new configuration would cost for you.

What Sony’s certified-refurbished promise does and does not cover
Sony’s PlayStation Direct explainer says: “Every PlayStation certified refurbished product completes a rigorous recertification process that includes full testing that meets the same functional standards as new PlayStation products.” It adds that genuine replacement parts are used as needed, that units may have minor cosmetic imperfections, and that they carry Sony’s standard one-year limited warranty.

That is Sony describing its own program. Three limits apply:
- No certified Pro was listed. On October 7, 2026, Sony’s US certified-refurbished catalog showed PS5 Slim and earlier PS5 console models plus controllers, but no PS5 Pro. That says nothing about whether third-party refurbished Pros exist.
- The promise doesn’t transfer. Another seller’s “refurbished” or “renewed” label may mean a different inspection, different parts, and different coverage. Unless the listing verifiably shows Sony certification, treat it as that seller’s own standard.
- No reliability data exists. I found no published failure-rate statistics for refurbished PS5 Pro units, and Sony’s testing description is not one. Don’t assume refurbished means more or less reliable.
Check the seller’s warranty and return window
Sony’s US limited hardware warranty is for the original purchaser, runs one year from the original purchase date, and requires a dated bill of sale or retailer receipt for service. A third-party refurbished unit does not automatically inherit it. Ask the seller to state in writing:
- Who backs the warranty: the seller, a refurbisher, a marketplace program, or a third-party plan.
- When it starts: your delivery or purchase date, or the original date.
- How long it lasts and what it excludes, such as drift in controllers, overheating, or cosmetic damage.
- The return window and who pays return shipping.
- What proof of purchase you will receive for service.
If the listing won’t disclose these, choose a better documented option.

When a higher refurbished price could still make sense
- It’s bundled with things you’d buy anyway. A disc drive, vertical stand, or extra controller that you actually need can offset the gap, if you price them honestly.
- The coverage is clearly better. A longer written warranty that starts on your purchase date and a no-hassle return window are real value.
- New stock is unavailable to you. If new units are out of stock or only offered by resellers at inflated prices, the comparison changes. Check Sony’s price first, though.
If none of these apply, the premium buys you nothing but a used console with a new-sounding label.
Ways to lower the cost of a new one instead
Sony’s trade-in page describes an extra $50 toward a PS5 or PS5 Pro purchase through its Back Market arrangement, subject to the page’s eligibility and process. If you have an older console to trade, that can reduce the effective price of new hardware. Confirm the offer is still active and read the terms before relying on it.
