If you already own a working PS5 and mainly play older RPGs, the PS5 Pro is usually a hard upgrade to justify on backward compatibility alone. It can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, but that does not mean every older RPG will look or run better. Improvements depend on the specific game, and PlayStation says PS5 Pro-enhanced features vary by title.
Can the PS5 Pro play PS4 RPGs?
Yes. PlayStation says more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro, while noting that a small number of PS4 games are incompatible. Its separate backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. These figures describe compatibility, not how many games receive Pro enhancements.

Check PlayStation’s PS5 Pro product page and PS4 backward-compatibility guidance for current information. Compatibility can also depend on whether you own a digital copy or a disc and, for physical games, whether your console has a compatible disc drive.
Will older RPGs run better on PS5 Pro?
Sometimes, but there is no blanket improvement for older RPGs. PlayStation says Game Boost may give some PS4 and PS5 games faster or smoother frame rates; that wording does not promise a change for every compatible game. Other Pro features depend on game-specific support.

PlayStation’s February 27, 2026 announcement said upgraded PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 titles on PS5 Pro at that time. That is not a list of older RPGs, nor evidence that every game in your library benefits. Check the current supported-game information on the official PS5 Pro page and look up each RPG you care about before treating an improvement as a reason to buy.
How to decide based on your RPG library
- Write down the games you actually play. Separate PS4 versions from PS5 versions; a game’s availability on PS5 does not establish that it has a Pro-specific enhancement.
- Check each title’s support. Look for an official Pro-enhanced designation or confirmed Game Boost benefit. If you cannot find one, do not assume that the Pro will produce a visible or meaningful improvement.
- Consider whether you already own a PS5. If you do, compare the cost of upgrading with the specific benefits verified for your games. If this would be your first PS5, the decision is broader: you are choosing a console for the whole library, not just paying to replace an existing one.
- Factor in your physical games. PlayStation’s 2024 launch announcement described PS5 Pro as a disc-less console, with the Disc Drive sold separately. If you own RPG discs, include the drive in your cost calculation and verify its current availability and compatibility.
- Check your local price and other games you play. The Pro is easier to justify if you also want improvements in supported newer titles. Whether that is worth the cost depends on local pricing and your own priorities.
What does the PS5 Pro cost?
PlayStation announced launch MSRPs of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax for the November 7, 2024 launch. Those are historical launch prices, not current deals or guaranteed prices in your region. Check current local console pricing—and, if needed, the separate Disc Drive price—before making a value comparison. The launch announcement also states that “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” See PlayStation’s launch announcement.

Who should buy it?
- Keep your PS5 if it works well for you and your main goal is playing older RPGs you already own. Backward compatibility lets you access a broad PS4 library, but it does not establish a meaningful upgrade for each game.
- Consider the Pro if you are buying your first PS5, have verified that specific games you play benefit from Pro features, or also want improvements in supported current titles—and the local total fits your budget.
- Pause before upgrading if your decision depends on an unverified claim that a particular older RPG runs better. Confirm that title’s support first, especially if you would also need a Disc Drive.
