There is a launch crunch, but “a lack of rockets” is only part of it. For some companies, the harder problem is getting a dependable launch slot: launch sites, shared range operations and payload-processing capacity can all limit how quickly a spacecraft gets to orbit. The pressure is uneven by region and provider, and more launch companies do not necessarily mean more readily available alternatives.
What “a lack of rockets” means for space companies
Space businesses need more than a rocket that exists on paper. They need a launch service that can carry their payload, reach the required orbit, meet a usable schedule and operate reliably. A shortage in any link of that chain can hold up a satellite or a mission.
- Vehicles and flight cadence: whether launch providers can build, prepare and fly rockets often enough.
- Launch-site infrastructure: whether pads and shared utilities can support more operations.
- Range access: whether safety, tracking and range schedules can accommodate launches.
- Payload processing: whether facilities and teams can prepare spacecraft and coordinate them with a launch date.
- Alternatives: whether a customer can switch to another provider if its first choice is unavailable.
These bottlenecks are related, but they are not interchangeable. Adding rockets will not by itself fix a congested range or a shortage of payload-processing space.

U.S. launch sites are handling much more activity
NASA’s Office of Inspector General reported that launches at Kennedy Space Center increased 252% and launches at Wallops increased 467% between 2020 and 2025. The OIG said both NASA-operated sites could approach operational capacity in 2028–2029. These figures describe Kennedy and Wallops, not every U.S. launch location.

- WE IGNITE IMAGINATIONS: Since 1958, Estes has created educational rocket kits and displays designed for an unforgettable aerospace experience. As a family-owned company, we have grown to offer exciting STEM products that engage aspiring rocketeers and the future minds of aerospace.
The sites do not have identical infrastructure conditions. At Kennedy, the OIG identified capacity and condition issues in common-use electrical, gas and transportation infrastructure. Wallops’ shared-infrastructure picture differs, reflecting recent upgrades. The findings point to a practical constraint: a launch site must support the activity around a rocket, not just provide a pad.
Federal ranges have also seen heavier commercial use. The Government Accountability Office reported that commercial launches at federal ranges had more than quadrupled since 2021. GAO identified payload-processing capacity and access to launch schedules as coordination constraints in federal range operations and U.S. national-security launch processes. That does not establish that every commercial customer is delayed for the same reason, but it shows how crowded operations can complicate planning.

Why more launch providers do not guarantee easy access
The OECD counted 325 orbital launch attempts and 25 active launch providers worldwide in 2025. Yet about 82% of attempts were attributed to the four largest providers, with SpaceX accounting for around half. The OECD cautions that estimates depend on how failed attempts and test flights are counted.

Those figures measure launch activity, not spare slots that customers can buy. A provider count can therefore give a misleading impression of choice: a company may need a specific orbit, schedule, reliability record or payload fit, and alternatives may not be available at scale. The OECD emphasizes that dependable performance and credible alternatives matter alongside the number of providers.

Europe’s concern is dependable, competitive access
Europe’s issue is not simply a global shortage of rockets. It is whether European companies and institutions can count on competitive launch services at the cadence and cost they need, including when external providers are unavailable or unsuitable.
Speaking to the Associated Press about European launch capability, Satellogic founder Emiliano Kargieman said: “China has its own launch capacity and Europe still doesn’t have a high-cadence, low-cost launch capacity, similar to SpaceX.” That is Kargieman’s assessment, not an independent measurement. The European Space Agency’s 2026 report puts the European upstream space market at €75 billion, with 80% of demand institutional and defence-dominated; those figures provide market context, not proof that launch scarcity alone is causing a crisis for European companies.

Do headline demand projections show a real shortage?
The Commercial Space Federation’s May 2026 advisory reported more than 180 launches from U.S. soil in 2025. The same advisory summarized work prepared with Rational Futures that models scenarios above 7,000 launches annually. That figure is a conditional scenario, not actual activity or a settled forecast.
Observed launch counts and modeled demand answer different questions. The first describes launches that took place under a particular counting method; the second explores what might be required under specified assumptions. A dramatic scenario can illustrate the scale of possible future demand, but it cannot establish that companies currently need that many launches or that every launch market is short of capacity.
What the launch crunch means for a space technology company
The risk depends on the company’s mission and its dependence on a particular provider, orbit, site or schedule. A delayed launch can postpone deployment or revenue, while uncertainty about a launch date can complicate spacecraft readiness and business planning. The available evidence establishes infrastructure and coordination pressures in particular U.S. settings, and concentrated global launch activity; it does not show that every space technology company is facing a delay.
For customers evaluating a mission, the useful question is not just “How many rockets are there?” It is whether a suitable, dependable launch opportunity is available on the needed timeline—and whether there is a credible fallback if plans change.
Quick Recap
- Check whether the mission requires a specific orbit, launch site or provider.
- Ask how launch scheduling and payload processing are handled, including what happens if a date slips.
- Distinguish a provider’s announced capacity from demonstrated, dependable flight cadence.
- Assess whether alternatives can meet the mission’s requirements, rather than counting providers in the abstract.
