A foldable phone can be worth buying if you want its large inner screen for other tasks and Pokémon GO works comfortably for you on that specific phone. The bigger display alone does not guarantee a better game: screen scaling, GPS and connectivity, outdoor handling, battery life, and heat all matter. If Pokémon GO is the main reason you are considering a foldable, try the exact model before buying and compare it with a conventional phone.

What Pokémon GO officially requires on Android

The Pokémon GO Help Center’s supported-devices page lists Android 9 or newer, at least 2 GB of RAM, GPS and Location Services, and a strong internet connection. It gives 720 × 1280 as a preferred resolution. Those are compatibility criteria, not guarantees of smooth performance or an endorsement of any particular foldable.

Niantic warns: “We cannot guarantee device support: With many device models and configurations available in different regions, we cannot guarantee that every device that meets the criteria will be able to play the game.” Check the exact handset and its regional configuration rather than relying on the Android version or a general foldable category. Niantic also says the game is not optimized for tablets; a foldable phone’s open screen is not automatically equivalent to a supported, well-optimized phone layout.

For a used device, check current compatibility rather than whether it ran the game in the past. Niantic ended support for affected 32-bit Android devices in phases: March 2025 for Samsung Galaxy Store installs and July 2025 for Google Play installs. See the 32-bit Android support announcement.

How the game may look on the inner screen

A large screen can change an app’s shape and proportions. Android’s device compatibility mode guidance describes letterboxing as one way to preserve an app’s aspect ratio when the screen dimensions differ from those the app handles directly. That is general Android context, not confirmation of how Pokémon GO behaves on a particular foldable.

Some owners of older Samsung Galaxy Z Fold models have reported that Pokémon GO runs on the cover screen but scales awkwardly on the inner display. These are individual reports, not controlled tests or evidence about every foldable or current model: see the Z Fold 4/5 discussion and the Z Fold 4 discussion.

Check both screens before buying

If possible, try Pokémon GO on the exact phone during the retailer’s return period. Test it closed and open, since the cover display and inner display can offer different trade-offs.

  • On the cover screen, check whether the map, buttons, and catching interactions feel comfortable at the phone’s narrower size.
  • On the inner screen, look for letterboxing, stretched or misplaced controls, awkward empty space, or a layout that makes the map harder to use.
  • Try your usual grip and one-handed interactions. A larger open screen may be less convenient to hold while walking, even if it shows more content.
  • Confirm that the game remains usable when you open or close the phone; do not assume the app’s layout or state will suit your preferred way of switching screens.

These are checks to make on the handset, not universal foldable shortcomings. The available reports do not establish that all foldables have scaling problems or that every cover display works equally well.

Outdoor play depends on GPS and a strong connection

Pokémon GO is designed around exploring real places, so location accuracy and mobile connectivity are central to play. Niantic’s requirements call for GPS and Location Services plus a strong internet connection; its support page also warns that some Wi-Fi-only tablets lack built-in GPS and that congested event networks can make it difficult to maintain a strong enough GPS signal. For a phone, check that location access is enabled and consider how reliably you can get mobile service where you play. The Nintendo UK Pokémon GO page also describes the game’s outdoor play context.

Battery, heat, and long sessions need model-specific evidence

There is no established foldable-versus-conventional-phone comparison here for Pokémon GO battery drain or temperature. Do not assume the inner display makes the game more efficient—or that foldables necessarily overheat or run out of power sooner. Look for independent reviews that test Pokémon GO or sustained GPS-and-game workloads on the exact model, and distinguish measured results from general battery specifications.

A portable battery pack can be a practical option for long outdoor sessions, but needing one is not proof that a particular phone has poor endurance. No specific capacity or charging performance is established here.

Decide whether the foldable earns its price beyond the game

Consider the whole phone purchase. If you will use the inner display for reading, video, multitasking, or other everyday tasks, Pokémon GO can be one consideration among several. If the game is your primary reason to pay more, compare conventional smartphones too and test the foldable’s two screens first. No current handset has been validated here as a better Pokémon GO choice.
