A 2023 gaming PC can be worth more today than it cost, but only under a specific definition of “worth.” Today’s replacement price for the same parts, what used parts have recently sold for, and what a buyer would pay for the assembled machine are three different numbers. Choose one, price every part on the same basis, and the answer to “is it worth more?” follows from that choice rather than from a single headline total.

Three numbers that get mixed up

Most “my PC gained value” claims combine measures that answer different questions. Keep them separate before you add anything up.

Measure What it answers Where the number usually comes from Main risk
Replacement cost, new What it would cost to buy the same or an equivalent part new today Current retailer listings and replacement-cost calculators Pricing basis, region, and inclusions vary by tool, and a total is not a resale figure
Used sold price, per part What a part of that model has recently sold for secondhand Completed sales on used marketplaces. One used-price tracker bases its values on eBay sold listings Condition, warranty, and region change the price. Asking prices overstate it
Whole-PC resale What a buyer would pay for the assembled machine Completed sales of comparable complete systems Buyers price the machine as a whole, so the result can differ from the sum of its parts

If your claim is about replacement cost, you are measuring what the build would cost to recreate. If it is about resale, you are measuring what someone would pay you. A replacement total that rose does not show that a used PC has become more valuable to sell.

What current GPU prices show, and what they do not

For many builds the graphics card drives most of the change, so it is the part to check first. Tom’s Hardware reported changes in US Newegg median prices for several NVIDIA models between June and August 2026:

#1 Best Overall
ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
Model Change in median price, June to August 2026 (US Newegg)
GeForce RTX 5060 +27%
GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB +13%
GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB +39%
GeForce RTX 5070 +36%
GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Flat
GeForce RTX 5080 +3%
GeForce RTX 5090 +9%

These are retailer medians for those models over those three months. They do not describe every graphics card, the rest of a PC, or any market outside US Newegg. A build with a card that rose 39% and a build with a flat card will produce very different totals, even if every other part is identical. Note also that these models are current-generation cards. If your 2023 card is an older model, you will usually need a performance-equivalent replacement, and that substitution is a judgment you must state.

Why a 2023 build can look more valuable on paper

Historical buying guides can help you check a launch-era reference, but they are not a receipt. TechSpot’s first-half 2023 buying guide stated that the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was available at its $450 MSRP at the time. That tells you what the chip was listed at then. It does not tell you what you paid, which retailer you used, or whether tax and shipping were included. Use your own purchase records for the paid side of the comparison.

How to run the comparison

  1. List every component by exact model. Include the CPU, GPU, memory kit, storage drives, motherboard, and power supply. Add the case, CPU cooler, and any other item you intend to count, and mark each one as included or excluded from the total.
  2. Record what you paid for each part. Note the price, currency, purchase date, retailer, and whether tax and shipping were included. Check your order history rather than relying on memory.
  3. Choose one definition of worth. Use replacement cost new, used sold price per part, or whole-PC resale. Do not blend them in a single total.
  4. Price every part on one basis. For replacement cost, use one retailer and region, and record the date. For used value, use several completed sales for each part and note condition. Do not use a single asking price.
  5. Match parts honestly. If an original model is discontinued or no longer sold, choose the nearest equivalent and say what you chose. Do not swap in a higher tier, because that inflates today’s total without changing the value of your machine.
  6. Apply the same inclusions to both sides. If you add tax, shipping, a case, or a cooler to today’s total, add them to the paid total too.
  7. Report both totals and the difference. Show what you paid, what the same build costs today, and the gap between them. The difference alone hides which side moved.
  8. Record the check date and recheck close to publication. Price trackers change daily.

Tools you can use for the replacement side

One current PC component calculator asks “What is my PC worth?” and prompts you to select a processor, graphics card, memory, SSD, motherboard, and power supply. Its replacement-cost page was updated October 7, 2026, and it uses US Newegg pricing. It excludes tax, shipping, case, cooler, peripherals, and software, so its total is a parts-only replacement figure. It is not an all-in price for a finished machine, and it is not a resale value. The same page recommends comparing more than one sale for used valuation.

Where the result goes wrong

  • Comparing a 2023 receipt with a newer model. A replacement tier one generation up can make the build look more valuable without changing the value of the original part.
  • Using asking prices for used parts. Listings that have not sold show what sellers hope to get, not what buyers pay.
  • Counting items on one side only. Adding a case or peripherals to today’s total but not to what you paid overstates the gain.
  • Treating a snapshot as an appraisal. A price checked on one day, from one retailer, is evidence for that day only.
  • Assuming the parts total equals resale. A buyer purchases a finished machine with its own age, warranty status, and condition. Resale is measured from comparable completed sales of complete systems.

Reading your result

If your replacement total is higher than what you paid, the honest conclusion is that the same parts cost more to buy new today. That says something about current component prices, but it does not establish that your PC has gained resale value. If you want to say the machine is worth more, measure that directly from completed used sales of the parts or of comparable complete systems, and state the date, region, and condition used for each figure.

Once the definition is fixed and both sides use the same parts and inclusions, the difference between the two totals is the number you can defend.
