Is 5 GHz WiFi harmful? For ordinary use at home or school, current guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) does not find convincing evidence that Wi-Fi causes adverse health effects. Wi-Fi uses non-ionizing radiofrequency (RF) fields; the established health effect at sufficiently high RF exposure is tissue heating. Ordinary Wi-Fi exposure is low, but “no convincing evidence of harm” is more accurate than claiming that every possible exposure is proven harmless.
What does “5 GHz Wi-Fi” mean?
5 GHz is a radio-frequency band used by Wi-Fi. The number does not mean the router is using 5G cellular service, and it does not identify a special kind of ionizing radiation. UKHSA says Wi-Fi devices operate near 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. Health guidance addresses Wi-Fi and RF exposure across relevant bands; it does not identify ordinary 5 GHz Wi-Fi as a unique hazard. UKHSA’s Wi-Fi guidance
Can Wi-Fi from a router cause health problems?
WHO says there is no convincing scientific evidence that weak signals from wireless networks cause adverse health effects. ICNIRP’s overall evaluation is that RF exposure below the thermal threshold is unlikely to be associated with adverse health effects. UKHSA likewise reports no consistent evidence of adverse health effects from Wi-Fi exposure in the general population. These are conclusions about the evidence assessed, not a claim that every RF exposure level is safe.
The established RF effect relevant to health is heating: at sufficiently high exposure, RF energy can heat tissue and, at harmful levels, contribute to heat stress, burns, or tissue damage. ICNIRP says Wi-Fi exposure is below the threshold at which body temperature is affected. Its Wi-Fi guidance says: “A large number of studies have been undertaken on both acute and long-term effects from HF exposure, such as Wi-Fi, without showing any conclusive evidence of adverse health effects.” ICNIRP: Wi-Fi

How much exposure does typical Wi-Fi create?
UKHSA gives 0.1 watt (100 milliwatts) as a typical power for both Wi-Fi user devices and routers. This is a typical figure, not a guaranteed maximum for every product and not a direct measure of how much RF energy a person absorbs. Exposure varies with factors such as distance, the device, how actively it is transmitting, and the surrounding environment. UKHSA: Wi-Fi radio waves and health
Measurements can help put exposure in context, but a study result is not a personal health assessment or a universal specification for today’s equipment:

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- In a 2011 study of six primary and secondary schools, the mean measured duty factor was 0.08% for 146 laptops (range 0.02% to 0.91%) and 4.79% for seven access-point networks (range 1.0% to 11.7%). These are averages from that particular study sample, not estimates for every home or school.
- A separate 2011 laboratory study tested 15 laptops in the 2.45 GHz band and eight laptops in the 5 GHz band. Their integrated radiated power measured 5 to 17 mW and 1 to 16 mW, respectively; six tested 5 GHz access points measured 3 to 29 mW. Measurements at 0.5 metres and farther were below ICNIRP reference levels. The findings describe particular devices tested at that time, not current universal device output.
UKHSA’s review of school measurements found Wi-Fi exposures small relative to ICNIRP guidelines. Its current guidance, rather than the specifications of a handful of older test devices, is the relevant general advice for ordinary use. UKHSA guidance and reviewed school measurements

Should you turn off Wi-Fi at night or reduce exposure?
UKHSA says no additional communal or individual action to reduce Wi-Fi exposure is necessary. Its guidance states: “UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency) sees no reason why Wi-Fi should not continue to be used, including in the education sector, and that no additional action is necessary communally or individually to reduce exposure further.” This is the agency’s position in guidance updated 19 February 2025. - Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

You may turn off a device’s Wi-Fi or choose wired networking for personal preference, convenience, or device-specific reasons. That is not a medically necessary precaution under UKHSA’s advice. Changing Wi-Fi bands, moving a router, buying shielding, or using an RF/EMF meter is not established by these sources as a health intervention for ordinary home Wi-Fi exposure.
Are symptoms attributed to Wi-Fi caused by RF exposure?
People can experience real and distressing symptoms that they associate with Wi-Fi or other electromagnetic fields. WHO says reported diffuse symptoms have not been scientifically linked to EMF exposure. That does not mean the symptoms are imaginary; it means a causal link to Wi-Fi has not been demonstrated. Anyone with persistent or concerning symptoms should discuss them with a healthcare professional, who can assess possible causes without assuming one in advance. WHO: Electromagnetic hypersensitivity

Wireless or wired: which should you choose?
There is no health-agency recommendation in the cited guidance to choose one Wi-Fi band over another for health reasons. Choose wireless or wired networking based on how you use your devices, whether they support a wired connection, and your own preference—not on a belief that ordinary 5 GHz Wi-Fi has been shown to cause harm.
