Short answer: Samsung documents app continuity between the Galaxy Z Fold’s cover and main screens, but that is not the same as an iPhone-style animation that visibly tracks the hinge as you open or close the phone. Flex Mode and app-specific transitions are separate features. Samsung’s official documentation does not describe a setting or Good Lock switch that enables a matching, system-wide effect.
What “fold animation” can mean
There are two different behaviors that are easy to conflate:
- App continuity: the same app can carry on when you switch between the cover display and the main display. The app’s content persists, but Samsung’s description does not promise that the interface morphs continuously in step with the hinge.
- Hinge-synchronized animation: the interface changes in real time as the device opens or closes, with movement tied to the hinge angle. This is the specific effect people often mean by an iPhone-style fold animation.
Samsung’s US support guidance says users can “Continue using apps on the cover screen by folding the device,” and its original Galaxy Fold description likewise discussed moving an app between cover and main displays. Those statements establish continuity, not a hinge-tracking visual morph. Samsung’s current continuity and Flex Mode guidance and its original Galaxy Fold announcement describe those behaviors.
What Samsung’s fold features do
Cover-to-main app continuity
When supported and enabled for the relevant device and software, an app can remain in use across the change from the cover display to the main display, or continue on the cover screen after folding. The app may need to be configured for continuity, and availability can vary by model, software version and settings. This is useful, but it does not establish a continuous animation synchronized to the hinge.

Flex Mode
Flex Mode is for using the phone while it is partially folded. Supported apps can adapt their layout or expose controls suited to that posture; Samsung also documents a Flex Mode panel. It is not evidence of an operating-system-wide transition between cover and main displays. Samsung’s support guidance and Flex Mode information explain the feature and its model-specific availability. The support page retrieved for this article lists Z Fold8 among devices where Flex Mode is not supported, illustrating why you should check your own model rather than assume every Fold has the same features.
Transitions designed into an app
Samsung’s developer guidance recommends optimizing an app for both cover and main screens and showing a visual transition when entering or leaving Flex Mode. That advice concerns how an individual app handles its own layouts and posture changes; it does not guarantee a transition supplied by Samsung’s launcher or operating system across all apps. Can Good Lock turn on an iPhone-like effect?
Samsung’s official documentation reviewed here describes continuity, Flex Mode and app-development guidance, but does not describe a setting or Good Lock module for enabling an exact, hinge-synchronized transition across the system. That is a limit on what the documentation establishes—not proof that Samsung could never add such a feature or that no third-party implementation exists.

There is also no verified compatibility matrix here showing a third-party app reproducing the effect reliably across Fold models and all apps. A launcher-level visual effect, if available in a particular setup, would not by itself establish that every app’s content follows the hinge continuously.

What Android’s foldable app API exposes
Android’s documented Jetpack WindowManager guide explains how apps can respond to folding features and posture information. It also states that FoldingFeature does not expose hinge angle. As a result, an app cannot rely on that standard API alone to obtain a precise, continuously sampled angle for a hinge-synchronized animation. What to check on your Fold
- Identify the exact model and software version. Fold features and menu locations can differ across generations and One UI releases.
- Check Samsung’s support guidance for that model and region. Confirm whether app continuity and Flex Mode are supported; do not rely on instructions written for another Fold.
- Check the app’s own settings and behavior. Continuity and layouts may depend on how the app is configured or designed.
- Treat animation claims narrowly. A setting that preserves an app across screens, or an app that changes its layout when folded, is not proof of a system-wide effect synchronized to hinge movement.
