Most iPhone users do not need Lockdown Mode. Keep iOS current, secure your Apple Account, use a passcode or biometrics, enable Stolen Device Protection, install apps from the App Store, and treat unexpected links and attachments as suspicious. Those measures are the right baseline for ordinary cybercrime and account theft.
Lockdown Mode is for the much smaller group with a credible reason to believe they could be individually targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, including mercenary spyware. It deliberately removes or limits some iPhone capabilities to reduce the attack surface. It is not a spyware scanner, does not prove that an iPhone is clean, and is not automatically “better” for everyday use.
What Lockdown Mode is designed to do
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as an optional, extreme protection for “the very few individuals who, because of who they are or what they do, may be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats.” The setting is intended to make exploitation harder by reducing the number of complex features an attacker can reach remotely.

Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature. There is no published percentage showing how often Lockdown Mode blocks spyware, and Apple does not present the setting as a guarantee. Think of it as risk reduction for a narrow threat model, not as a diagnostic tool.

Who should use Lockdown Mode?
Use standard protection if you have no specific targeting concern
If you have not received an Apple threat notification and have no credible reason to think an attacker is selecting you personally, start with the standard controls. They protect more aspects of ordinary iPhone use without preventing normal conversations, browsing, invitations, accessories, or work management.
Consider Lockdown Mode when the risk is personal and unusually serious
Lockdown Mode is appropriate to discuss with a security professional when your identity, work, access, or public role could make you a specific target of a well-resourced attacker. The relevant question is not whether spyware exists in the world; it is whether there is a credible reason to believe an attacker is willing to target you with an advanced exploit.
An Apple threat notification is a particularly important signal. Apple says such notifications are high-confidence warnings that it believes a user was individually targeted. Recipients should verify the warning through Apple’s account website and seek expert assistance rather than trying to interpret it alone.
Do not turn it on solely because it sounds stronger
The setting imposes deliberate restrictions. Enabling it without a matching threat model can interfere with legitimate work, websites, messaging, invitations, accessories, and device management while offering little additional practical benefit over a properly secured, updated iPhone.
Build the standard iPhone security baseline first
These measures apply whether or not you later use Lockdown Mode. They address the attacks most iPhone owners are likely to encounter.

1. Install current software
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Install the latest available iOS release and restart if requested.
Update every Apple device you use. Lockdown Mode’s protections have expanded across operating-system releases, so an older version may not provide the same behavior as the current one.

Use a strong device passcode and enable Face ID or Touch ID where supported. Biometrics make it practical to keep the device locked while the passcode protects access when biometric authentication is unavailable or disabled.
3. Secure the Apple Account
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Open Sign-In & Security.
- Use a strong, unique password and confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled.
Never disclose a verification code or password in response to an unexpected message, call, or email.
4. Enable Stolen Device Protection
On supported iOS versions, open Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) → Stolen Device Protection, then turn it on. This adds safeguards for sensitive changes when the iPhone is away from familiar locations.
5. Keep software choices and links conservative
- Install apps from the App Store and remove apps you no longer need.
- Use unique passwords or passkeys for important services.
- Do not open unexpected links or attachments, even when the message appears to come from someone you know.
- Confirm unusual requests through a separate, trusted channel instead of replying to the original message.
What changes when Lockdown Mode is on
Lockdown Mode is a collection of restrictions rather than a single scanner. Exact behavior changes as Apple updates iOS, so the current Apple Lockdown Mode guide is the authority for a particular release. The main categories are:
Messages and attachments
Some message attachments and link previews are limited. Content that normally renders automatically can require a different handling path or may not be available. This reduces the amount of complex content processed from an unsolicited conversation, but it can make ordinary exchanges less convenient.

Web browsing
Some complex web technologies are disabled or restricted. A site that depends on advanced browser features may not work normally, even though the site is legitimate. This is an intentional trade-off: fewer exposed technologies can mean fewer avenues for a sophisticated exploit, but also fewer fully functional websites.
Invitations and incoming requests
Invitations from people you have not previously contacted can be limited. The restriction is intended to reduce unsolicited entry points through Apple services, calendars, and similar request mechanisms.
Apple-service requests
Some requests and invitations handled through Apple services are restricted to reduce unsolicited interactions. The precise list depends on the iOS generation and Apple’s current implementation.
Wired connections while the iPhone is locked
Wired data connections are restricted while the device is locked. This reduces what a physical connection can do before you authenticate, while emergency SOS calling remains available.
Configuration profiles and device management
While Lockdown Mode is on, a new configuration profile cannot be installed and the iPhone cannot enroll in mobile-device management. Existing management profiles remain in place. This distinction matters for employer- or school-managed phones: turning on the mode does not remove an existing profile, but it can prevent a new enrollment or configuration change.
Emergency calling is not disabled
Apple says SOS emergency calls are not affected by Lockdown Mode. The mode is restrictive, but it is not intended to prevent emergency access.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode on an iPhone
Update the iPhone before enabling the feature. Apple lists availability beginning with iOS 16, while later iOS releases add or refine protections.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Read the feature summary and confirm your choice.
- When prompted, tap Turn On & Restart.
- Enter the device passcode after the iPhone restarts.
Review the on-screen explanation before confirming. It lists the restrictions that apply to your installed iOS version, which may differ from descriptions written for an earlier release.
Cover every Apple device, not just the iPhone
For protection that matches the threat model, enable Lockdown Mode separately on each supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac you use. A paired Apple Watch turns on Lockdown Mode automatically when you enable it on the iPhone. Apple recommends enabling the mode across all devices for complete protection; leaving a frequently used device unprotected can preserve an alternate route for an attacker.
Check devices that share the same Apple Account, receive the same messages, or handle the same work. The feature’s restrictions and availability can vary by operating system, so update each device first and verify its own Lockdown Mode status.

Expect to approve exceptions carefully
Apple allows some sites, apps, or contacts to be excluded from Lockdown Mode when necessary. An exclusion can restore a function, but it also reduces the protection for that trusted item. Use exclusions only for a specific need, keep the scope as narrow as possible, and remove them when the need ends.

Plan for legitimate incompatibilities
Before enabling the mode on a work phone, identify websites, messaging workflows, wired accessories, and management tools that are essential. Test them after activation rather than assuming that a familiar service will behave normally. A site that fails may simply rely on a restricted web technology; failure alone does not show that the site is malicious.

Do not treat a restriction as a detection result
If a message attachment, invitation, or website is unavailable, that means Lockdown Mode limited the feature. It does not mean the content contained spyware, and allowing a trusted exception does not certify that the content is safe.
What Lockdown Mode cannot tell you
- It does not scan the iPhone for known spyware.
- It does not prove that the device has never been compromised.
- It does not block every possible attack or replace software updates.
- It does not make a weak Apple Account password, reused password, or careless code disclosure safe.
- It does not turn an untrusted message, attachment, or website into a trusted one.
If you suspect a targeted compromise, avoid relying on the setting alone. Keep the device current, preserve the details of suspicious contact or alerts, and obtain qualified incident-response advice. Apple specifically recommends expert assistance for people who receive its threat notifications.
How to handle an Apple threat notification
Apple says these alerts can appear on the iPhone Lock Screen and in Settings. They may also arrive by email or appear after you sign in to your Apple Account page. Apple does not disclose the technical detection details, so the notification should be treated as a serious warning without trying to reverse-engineer the evidence yourself.

- Sign in and check whether the same notification appears on your Apple Account page.
- Do not click links, install an app or configuration profile, open a file, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code in response to the alert.
- Contact a qualified security professional for help interpreting the warning and deciding what to do next.
A genuine Apple threat notification does not ask you to perform those risky actions. Apple identifies Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as one source of expert assistance for recipients.
Choosing between the two approaches

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing stronger restrictions with detection: Lockdown Mode reduces attack surface; it does not report whether spyware is installed.
- Turning it on while leaving another device exposed: Apple’s guidance is to enable it across supported devices for complete protection.
- Skipping updates: The mode and its protections depend on the operating-system release, and neither mode substitutes for current software.
- Assuming every warning email is real: Verify through account.apple.com and reject requests for passwords, codes, installations, files, or link clicks.
- Creating broad exceptions: Excluding a site, app, or contact lowers protection for that item.
- Expecting normal behavior everywhere: Restricted web technologies, attachments, invitations, wired connections, and management changes can be intentional effects of the mode.
The bottom line for iPhone spyware protection
For nearly everyone, standard iPhone security is the correct starting point: current software, a strong passcode or biometrics, a protected Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Stolen Device Protection, App Store apps, unique passwords or passkeys, and caution with links and attachments. Lockdown Mode is an additional, deliberately inconvenient layer for people facing a credible risk of highly targeted attacks. It can reduce exposure, but it cannot scan for spyware or guarantee a clean device. A threat notification is the point at which to verify the warning through Apple and obtain expert help rather than making a decision based on fear or an unsolicited email.
