If your iPhone icons or widgets are hard to scan, try changing their appearance, reducing transparency, or increasing contrast. Apple documents these Home Screen and accessibility controls, but does not confirm a universal iOS 27 readability bug or promise that one setting will fix every screen.
First, change the Home Screen appearance
Apple’s iPhone guide documents controls for icon and widget styles, tint, and size. To try a different icon style:
- On the Home Screen, touch and hold an empty area until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Try Light, Dark, or Auto. If Clear or Tinted is selected, switch away from it and see whether the icons are easier to distinguish.
If you choose a tinted style, adjust the tint and saturation in the same customization controls. The best-looking option depends on your wallpaper and visual preferences; compare the icons against the background you actually use. Apple also notes that clear and tinted appearances can desaturate widget contents, and recommends avoiding very small text in widget design (Apple Developer’s widget guidance).

Weigh larger icons against visible app names
In Edit > Customize, try the larger icon size if the artwork itself is too small. There is a trade-off: Apple says app names disappear when icons are enlarged. Larger artwork may be easier to see, but the labels that help identify apps will no longer appear beneath them.

Make transparent backgrounds solid
If icons or widgets blend into a blurred or translucent background, use Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Reduce Transparency. Apple says this makes transparent or blurred backgrounds opaque with a solid color, which can make those areas easier to see (Apple’s display accessibility guide).
Increase contrast between screen elements
In the same Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size menu, turn on Increase Contrast. Apple Support says this increases contrast between elements such as apps and background colors. Check the Home Screen after enabling it to see whether the difference helps on your device.

Adjust a hard-to-read widget on its own
If the problem is limited to one widget, changing every icon may not address it. Touch and hold the widget to check its available options, or use the Home Screen customization controls to try another widget size. Widget sizes and settings vary by app, and not every app offers every size. A different size or app-specific option may make its content easier to scan.

What the iOS 27 wording does—and does not—establish
The phrase “iOS 27 update making icons and widgets unreadable?” describes a reader’s concern, not a confirmed cause. Apple’s feature document describes Liquid Glass and clear or tinted icon and widget styling as iOS 26 features, while its current iOS 27 user guides document appearance and accessibility settings rather than diagnosing individual readability complaints (Apple’s iOS 26 feature document; Apple’s Home Screen guide).

Wallpaper, tint, widget design, app version, and device configuration can all affect what is easy to see. Apple’s published guidance does not identify which factor is responsible for a particular user’s screen, and the settings above should be treated as options to try—not guaranteed cures.
