If your Mac does not automatically connect to your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot, first check the Mac’s Auto-Join Hotspot preference, then verify the devices meet Apple’s Instant Hotspot requirements. These nine checks move from simple settings to connection fallbacks; they are a practical troubleshooting sequence, not nine fixes Apple publishes as a list. Apple’s documentation describes the Mac’s Automatic option for macOS Tahoe 26 or later, so it does not establish any macOS 27-specific behavior.
1. Set the Mac to join hotspots automatically
Auto-Join is controlled on the device that joins the hotspot—in this case, your Mac. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi‑Fi, then choose Automatic next to Ask to join hotspots. Apple says this option is available in macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If you would rather approve each connection, choose Ask to Join instead. Apple’s Instant Hotspot instructions describe this preference.
2. Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices
For Instant Hotspot, enable both Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on the Mac and iPhone. These radios help the devices discover and connect to one another. Check the controls on each device rather than assuming that a previous connection left them enabled. Apple lists both as prerequisites in its Instant Hotspot guidance.

Keep the Mac and iPhone within 10 metres (30 feet) of each other. Apple gives this as the proximity requirement in its Mac guide to using an iPhone’s internet connection. Walls, interference, or other conditions can still affect a wireless connection, so try with the devices near one another.

4. Check Apple Account or Family Sharing access
For Instant Hotspot, the Mac and iPhone should be signed in to the same Apple Account. If they use different accounts, Family Sharing can provide access when it is configured to allow the connection. Check that the iPhone is available to the relevant family member; merely being in the same family group does not replace the hotspot-access setting. Apple explains the account and Family Sharing requirements in its Auto-Join Hotspot instructions.
5. Confirm Personal Hotspot and cellular service are available
On the iPhone, make sure cellular data is on and that Personal Hotspot is available through your carrier plan. Instant Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular connection; it does not pass along a Wi‑Fi network the iPhone is using. If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable, check cellular data and ask your carrier whether your plan supports the feature. Additional fees may apply. For same-account Instant Hotspot, Apple says you do not need to turn on Allow Others to Join. That setting is relevant for ordinary hotspot connections from devices that do not qualify through the same Apple Account or Family Sharing. Do not treat it as a universal prerequisite for Mac Auto-Join. Apple distinguishes these connection cases here.

6. Try selecting the iPhone manually from the Mac
Open the Mac’s Wi‑Fi menu and select the iPhone’s name if it appears. Apple notes that the hotspot can take a few seconds to show up in the Wi‑Fi menu. If manual selection connects, the iPhone is discoverable and the connection works; return to the Auto-Join preference and check that it is set as you want. If the iPhone does not appear, revisit the radio, proximity, account, and hotspot-availability checks above. Apple documents manual connection in its Mac connection guide.

7. Update both devices and restart them
Install available software updates for macOS and iOS, then restart the Mac and iPhone and test again. Apple includes software updates and restarting among its Personal Hotspot troubleshooting steps. The cited guidance does not establish a special macOS 27 fix or behavior; use the updates offered for your devices. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.
8. Test Maximize Compatibility on supported iPhones
If wireless compatibility seems to be the problem, try Maximize Compatibility in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings, if the option is available. Apple lists this setting for iPhone 12 or later. It may reduce performance and Wi‑Fi security, so use it as a diagnostic or compatibility option rather than assuming it is a cost-free improvement. Apple notes these trade-offs in its iOS 27 Personal Hotspot guide and regional troubleshooting guidance.

9. Test Bluetooth or a compatible cable as a fallback
Apple documents Bluetooth and a cable with connectors that match the ports on both devices as alternative ways to use the iPhone’s cellular connection from a Mac. These methods can help you get online, but they do not repair the Mac’s Wi‑Fi Auto-Join preference.

If a wired connection works while Wi‑Fi Auto-Join does not, that narrows the issue toward wireless discovery or configuration, but does not prove a specific cause. Apple describes these connection paths in its Mac guide.
