First check whether your iPhone is still contacting emergency services. If an accidental emergency call is active, stay on the line until a responder answers and explain that help is not needed. If the call or text has ended, the next step depends on what you see: a brief callback period or post-text emergency mode is different from a persistent “SOS,” “SOS only,” “No Service,” or “Searching” status.
Check whether an emergency call or text is still active
If an emergency call was made accidentally and is still in progress, do not hang up or restart the iPhone. Apple’s instruction is: “If an emergency call has been made and you don’t need emergency services, don’t hang up. Wait until a responder answers, then explain that you don’t need help.” Apple’s iPhone User Guide gives this direction for accidental calls.
Once the emergency interaction is complete, identify whether the phone is showing a temporary emergency mode or a cellular-service status. “SOS” or “SOS only” in the status bar does not by itself mean a call is active.

If an emergency call ended, allow the callback period to clear
On CDMA iPhones, Apple says emergency call mode can remain for a few minutes after an emergency call ends so emergency services can call back. During that time, data transmission and text messages are blocked. Wait for the short period to pass; do not reject a callback or try to disable emergency features. Apple documents this behavior in the iPhone User Guide.

If you texted 911, restart after the interaction is over
Apple documents a separate post-text state: after texting 911, iPhone enters emergency mode for 30 minutes. Apple says to restart the iPhone to exit this mode. Do this only after the emergency conversation is finished and no responder is trying to reach you. Apple’s emergency call and text guidance describes the 30-minute mode and restart instruction.
Restart a responsive iPhone normally
Use the sequence for your model. After sliding to power off, wait 30 seconds before turning the iPhone back on.

These normal restart directions are from Apple’s restart guide. If the phone responds to its controls, use a normal restart rather than a force restart.
Force-restart only if the iPhone is frozen
A force restart is for an unresponsive or frozen phone, not the first response to an active emergency call. Follow the sequence for the model:

Apple’s force-restart guide has the model-specific sequences. If your iPhone is not covered there or the sequence does not work, consult Apple’s model-specific iPhone instructions rather than guessing. If it still will not turn on, Apple says it may need service.

“SOS” or “SOS only” means the iPhone is not connected to its own carrier network. In supported locations, it may still be able to make emergency calls using another carrier’s network. Apple’s cited status-bar guidance identifies Australia, Canada, and the United States for this SOS feature; availability varies by country or region. “No Service” and “Searching” also indicate the phone is not connected to a cellular network. Try the basic network checks
- If your carrier’s network is available, open Control Center or Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, and turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone using the normal model-specific steps above.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, then check for an iOS update and a carrier-settings update. To check carrier settings, open Settings > General > About and wait for an update prompt.
These steps may restore a connection, but a restart does not resolve every coverage, account, SIM, or hardware issue. Apple lists them in its SOS, No Service, and Searching troubleshooting guidance.

- If you use Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions) and confirm the intended line is turned on.
- If a cellular line is missing, contact your carrier about setting up the eSIM, or insert the physical SIM if your model and plan use one.
- If you use a physical SIM, remove it and reinsert it. If it is damaged or does not fit, ask the carrier for a replacement.
SIM and line options depend on the iPhone model and carrier. See Apple’s line and SIM troubleshooting instructions before handling the SIM.

Ask the carrier to check the account and network
Your carrier can verify whether the account is active, whether coverage or an outage is affecting the area, whether the device is blocked, and whether the plan is set up correctly. For an imported iPhone, ask whether IMEI registration is required in your country. Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage account details.
Run diagnostics or arrange service if needed
On iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics. If the carrier confirms that the network and account are fine but the iPhone still cannot connect, seek device service; persistent trouble may point to a hardware issue. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers carrier checks and diagnostics, and its restart and service guidance addresses an iPhone that will not turn on.
