The iPhone Fold rumor-era name is now iPhone Duo, and its reported U.S. starting price landed close to the leak: the Associated Press says Apple unveiled it at $1,999. The 12GB RAM figure remains a leak claim, however—not a specification confirmed in the launch coverage reviewed here. Apple reportedly plans availability for October 23, 2026, a date still in the future as of October 4, 2026.

What the iPhone Fold leaks got right—and what remains unconfirmed

“iPhone Fold” was the common name used during the rumor period. On September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled the foldable as iPhone Duo, according to the Associated Press. The launch report puts its U.S. starting price at $1,999, very close to the pre-announcement prediction of $2,000.

The memory claim is a different story. Before the unveiling, MacRumors relayed Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s report that the entry model would cost $2,000 with 256GB of storage; higher-capacity models could reach roughly $3,000. Separately, 9to5Mac reported that the Korean publication The Bell had claimed the phone would have 12GB of RAM. These are leak reports, not confirmation from Apple. The AP launch account does not specify RAM or storage tiers.

What Apple’s unveiling reporting says about the iPhone Duo

  • Starting price: $1,999 in the U.S., as reported by the AP after the announcement.
  • Main display: 7.6 inches when unfolded, according to the AP.
  • Apple Pencil: Pencil support is reported, but the coverage does not identify a compatible model or say whether a Pencil is included.
  • Availability: October 23, 2026, according to the AP. That date had not arrived as of October 4, 2026.
  • RAM and storage configurations: The reviewed launch coverage does not confirm them. Treat 12GB RAM and 256GB entry storage as reported claims, not announced specifications.

Apple CEO John Ternus said the Duo “will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone,” as quoted by the AP. That is the company’s promotional characterization, not independent evidence of performance or usability.

How the iPhone Duo compares with the Galaxy Z Fold 8

The available figures make the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 a useful price-and-specification reference, but they do not establish which phone is better in everyday use. The comparison below sticks to reported details rather than implying hands-on results.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

The Duo is part of Apple’s iPhone line; the Z Fold 8 is Samsung’s Android foldable. That makes ecosystem preference a practical part of the choice, but the sources cited here do not establish detailed software differences or comparative performance. Tom’s Guide also reports CCS Insight’s estimate that 25 million foldable phones were sold in 2025, up 18% from 2024. Separately, the AP quotes CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood saying foldables account for less than 5% of the overall smartphone market. Those figures describe market estimates, not sales of either phone.

What to check before deciding whether the premium makes sense

  • Wait for confirmed memory and storage configurations if those specifications matter to your purchase; the 12GB figure remains unverified in the launch account reviewed here.
  • Compare the final configuration and regional price, rather than judging only by the $1,999 U.S. starting price.
  • If Apple Pencil use matters, verify which Pencil model works and whether it is sold separately; the reporting reviewed here does not answer either question.
  • Choose based on your preferred iPhone or Android ecosystem and the value you place on an unfolded 7.6-inch screen. The available reports do not provide comparable hands-on tests of the two devices.
