The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has inspired attempts to imitate the iPhone Duo’s cover-to-inner-screen transition, but the available evidence does not verify the headline’s claim that four animations were tried and only one worked. It documents two distinct projects: an early proof of concept and a later overlay called Duo Fold Live. Neither should be mistaken for a Samsung-supported, native One UI animation.
What the iPhone Duo-style animation is meant to do
The effect imitates a handoff between a foldable’s cover display and inner display as the hinge opens or closes. The transition changes with the device’s movement, aiming to make the two screens feel like one continuous experience.
Reports of the original Galaxy Z Fold 8 demonstration describe a proof of concept, not a replacement home screen or an animation built into One UI. Android Authority’s coverage describes hinge-sensor readings driving the effect; SamMobile and PhoneArena report that the demonstration used captured images of the two screens. Why the original demo is not a live system-wide transition
A hinge sensor can tell an app how far the phone is open, but that does not give an ordinary third-party app unrestricted access to redraw One UI or every app on the device. In the reported proof of concept, the transition blended or animated screen captures rather than continuously transforming all live content. That distinction matters: a video can look smooth while still showing a fixed snapshot instead of the current home screen or app.

PhoneArena noted a visible consequence of using captured screens: information such as the clock can differ between the images during the handoff. The original effect is therefore best understood as a visual demonstration, not evidence that the underlying system UI has been replaced.
SamMobile quoted the creator’s Reddit explanation: “This isn’t the real SystemUI. Samsung doesn’t provide the necessary access for us to build this as a third-party app. This is a proof-of-concept, not a real launcher.” This is the developer’s characterization as relayed by SamMobile, not an official Samsung statement.

Duo Fold Live is a separate, later project
Duo Fold Live is distinct from the initial proof of concept. Its project documentation describes a free, open-source overlay inspired by the iPhone Duo animation. It says the overlay can run over One UI and ordinary apps without replacing the launcher. That is a different implementation and should not be conflated with the earlier screenshot-based demo.
The project repository identifies version 3.5.2 and lists Android 17 and Samsung wallpaper/API checks among its requirements. It also notes an issue involving a flash when unlocking the wallpaper. Which Galaxy foldables are actually verified?
Duo Fold Live’s project page says it has been tested on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 model SM-F971U. It does not establish compatibility with every regional Fold 8 variant. The project explicitly leaves the Fold 8 Ultra, Fold 7, and other devices unverified. Its author’s September 22, 2026 community walkthrough likewise says development and testing were limited to the Z Fold 8. These are project-author statements, not independent compatibility certifications. Read the walkthrough.
A device appearing in a model-recognition list is not proof that an animation works correctly on it. Compatibility should mean that the specific device and software combination has actually been tested, not simply that an app detects a model name.

What can be concluded about the claim that only one of four worked?
The sources available here do not name four animations tried by the article’s author, give their versions or installation methods, or document the result of each test. They therefore cannot verify the first-person claim that one out of four worked. The reported developer demonstrations are not evidence of an author’s own four-item test.
A reliable comparison would record, for each attempt, the animation name and build, installation method, exact Fold 8 model and software version, what appeared during opening and closing, and any setup or stability issue. Without those observations, it would be misleading to name a winner or say that three failed.

How to judge an animation demo before trying it
- Access: Check whether it uses ordinary app permissions or requires system-level access. A convincing clip alone does not show what access the implementation needs.
- Live content: Determine whether it animates the current screen or uses screenshots, wallpaper, or another visual stand-in.
- Continuity: Look for timing mismatches, black frames, stale screen information, or other artifacts at the display handoff.
- Device evidence: Look for tests on the exact model and software version you own. A claimed or detected model is not the same as a verified test.
- Setup and recovery: Review installation steps, known issues, and how to disable or remove the overlay if the result is unstable or disruptive.
These checks separate a polished showcase from evidence that an effect behaves reliably on a particular phone. No Samsung endorsement or native One UI support is established for either project.
