Early iPhone Duo preorders are producing a strong but still indirect demand signal. Evercore ISI reported delivery estimates stretching into late January—about 100 days—in the regions and configurations it tracked shortly after preorders opened. The firm described demand as “solidly out of the gate,” while cautioning that long waits can also result from constrained production capacity.
Apple (AAPL) shares gained more than 2% during the week covered by the report, following a nearly 4% increase during the September iPhone launch week. The stock move reflects investor confidence in the early read, not confirmation of completed sales.
What the early iPhone Duo delivery signal shows
Evercore’s tracked configurations moved to late-January delivery windows soon after preorders began. The roughly 100-day estimates appeared across the regions and configurations included in its checks, indicating that customers were encountering materially longer waits than a normal launch-day fulfillment window.

However, a delivery estimate measures the gap between orders and available inventory; it does not separately identify how many orders are driven by demand and how many reflect limited supply.

Why “solidly out of the gate” matters
Evercore’s phrase means the initial order pattern was better than expected relative to the firm’s launch assumptions. It is an early read rather than a full-quarter sales result. Cancellations, production changes, channel inventory and regional mix can all alter the eventual outcome.
Long waits are positive—but not proof of sales
Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management made the same distinction. He wrote, “Even factoring in supply will be tight with the new form factor, I still believe the early read is positive vs expectations.” He also said, “While we don’t know supply which is lower because of new form factor, the long lead times suggest we’re off to a fast start.”

The new form factor could require different components, assembly processes or production yields than established iPhone designs. If Apple is deliberately ramping cautiously, capacity could be the binding constraint even with moderate order volume. Conversely, if production is adequate, a late-January promise would be stronger evidence that customers are arriving faster than Apple can fulfill them. The available delivery data cannot determine which explanation accounts for more of the delay.
Munster’s fiscal-2027 forecast
Munster raised his confidence in a 20 million-unit iPhone Duo estimate for Apple’s fiscal 2027. That is twice the 10 million-unit Street estimate cited in the report. At 20 million units, he calculated that the Duo could account for roughly 8% of Apple’s total iPhone unit sales next year.

These are analyst estimates, not Apple guidance. They should be treated as scenario figures until Apple reports product-level results or provides enough information for independent shipment calculations.

Munster estimated that as many as 20% of last year’s early Pro Max buyers could be waiting for the Duo. That possibility would mean some apparent softness in Pro Max demand is product substitution rather than a decline in interest in premium iPhones. The report does not establish how many customers actually switched or whether the estimate will hold.

Why AAPL had its strongest week since the launch
Apple shares rose more than 2% in the week discussed by the report, making it the strongest weekly performance since the nearly 4% gain during the September iPhone launch week. Investors appear to have treated the January delivery windows and Evercore’s positive characterization as evidence that the Duo could add meaningful volume beyond the existing Pro lineup.

The stock reaction also incorporates expectations. A 20 million-unit outcome would be materially above the 10 million-unit Street estimate, so even partial evidence of faster adoption can affect forecasts before financial results arrive. The share move does not prove that Apple will reach Munster’s estimate, and it does not isolate the iPhone Duo from other factors affecting AAPL.

The report does not identify the Duo’s exact retail model names, storage tiers or country-specific configurations. It describes a new iPhone form factor but does not establish a definitive pair of products. Readers should therefore avoid treating “iPhone Duo” as a confirmed Apple marketing name or assuming that every late-January estimate applies to every configuration.
Until Apple or a reliable product listing identifies the models, accessory compatibility, storage options and regional availability cannot be inferred from the delivery data alone.

How to interpret the signal over the next few weeks
- Watch whether delivery windows lengthen or recover. Continued slippage would indicate that orders are still running ahead of available inventory; faster dates could indicate that Apple is catching up.
- Separate regions and configurations. A delay concentrated in one storage tier or country is less informative than a broad move across the tracked set.
- Compare with production commentary. Evidence of manufacturing constraints would reduce the amount of the delay that can be attributed to demand.
- Check for substitution. Strong Duo orders alongside weaker Pro demand may reflect customers choosing the new design rather than expanding total iPhone demand.
- Wait for reported units. Apple’s fiscal-2027 results and channel data will provide a firmer test of the 20 million-unit forecast than preorder lead times.
