To give one person a distinct sound on iPhone, open their card in Contacts, tap Edit, then choose Ringtone or Text Tone and select a sound. Those choices apply to that contact; your general defaults are set separately in Settings.
Set a ringtone for one contact
- Open the Contacts app and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Choose the sound you want, then save the contact if prompted.
Apple’s documented route is through the contact card: open Contacts, tap the person’s name, then tap Edit and Ringtone. Apple’s instructions for using tones and ringtones describe this contact-specific setting.
Set a text tone for one contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Text Tone.
- Choose a sound, then save the contact if prompted.
Ringtone and Text Tone are separate options, so setting one does not automatically change the other. The exact labels or screens can vary with iOS version.

Contact tones versus your default sounds
A sound chosen on an individual contact card is for that person. To change the general sound used by default, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, select a category such as Ringtone or Text Tone, and choose a sound. Changing a default is not the route for giving only one person a different tone.

Choose how to get the sound

Create and assign a custom ringtone with GarageBand
Apple documents GarageBand on iPhone as a way to make a ringtone from a local audio file, an eligible downloaded song in the Apple Music library, or a song you created. A protected or undownloaded Apple Music item cannot be used; Apple says such an item may appear dimmed. Exported ringtones can be up to 30 seconds. If the ringtone is longer, GarageBand can shorten it automatically or you can trim it before exporting.
- Prepare an eligible audio source in GarageBand on your iPhone.
- Export the finished audio as a ringtone. If it exceeds 30 seconds, shorten it as needed.
- When GarageBand offers Use sound as, choose Assign to contact, then select the person.
For Apple’s full workflow and current screen labels, see Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone. If you only want to select a tone already available in Contacts, GarageBand is not required.

Browse or redownload purchased tones
To browse tones, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones > Tone Store. Purchased tones appear near the top of the sound list. Store availability and features vary by country or region, and Apple notes that some previously purchased tones may no longer be available to redownload. Check Apple’s tone and ringtone guidance for details.
