To recognize a caller, give that contact a distinctive ringtone. To let selected people interrupt while other calls are silenced, set up the People list in a Focus such as Do Not Disturb. These controls solve different problems: a contact ringtone changes how that person’s call sounds, while Focus settings control which calls and notifications can get through during that Focus.
Choose the setting that matches what you want
| Setting | Purpose | Scope | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contact ringtone | Identify a caller by sound | The sound assigned to one contact | Remains assigned to that contact until changed |
| Focus People allow list | Control who can interrupt you | Calls and notifications while that Focus is active | Only while the Focus is in effect |
A ringtone does not make other callers silent or create a whitelist. Apple describes contact-specific ringtones as a way to assign distinctive sounds to people; Silent mode and Focus settings can still affect whether you hear an incoming call. Apple’s iPhone ringtone guide explains the contact setting.

Set a different ringtone for one contact
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone.
- Tap the person whose calls you want to recognize.
- Tap Edit, then tap Ringtone.
- Choose a tone. Save the contact changes if prompted.
The new sound identifies calls from that contact; it does not determine whether calls from other people can ring. If you need to control interruptions rather than identify a caller, configure a Focus instead.
Allow selected people during a Focus
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Choose the Focus you want to configure, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep or Work.
- Tap People and choose Allow Notifications From.
- Add the contacts you want to allow, then review the available call options, including allowed call groups and repeated calls, to match your needs.
Apple also documents the option to silence selected people in a Focus. Settings labels and available options can vary by software version. The repeated-calls option is for two or more calls from the same person within three minutes; it is a Focus setting, not a general exception to every call restriction. See Apple’s Focus notification guide.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use Emergency Bypass only for a per-contact exception
For a contact whose sounds and vibrations should be allowed even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced, open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, then tap Ringtone or Text Tone and turn on Emergency Bypass. This is intended for emergency contacts; it is not a replacement for setting the general Focus allow list. Apple’s Focus guide describes this exception.
Make and assign a custom ringtone
If the built-in tones are not distinctive enough, Apple documents GarageBand on iPhone as a way to create a ringtone from an audio file, a song in your Apple Music library, or music you made. After preparing the audio, export it as a ringtone and choose Assign to contact to attach it to a person. GarageBand can automatically shorten an exported ringtone that is longer than 30 seconds. Not every music-library track is necessarily available for export. Follow Apple’s GarageBand ringtone instructions for the workflow.

If a call still does not ring
Check these settings in order; the cause can depend on the caller, the active Focus, and carrier or network conditions.
- Silent mode: Make sure Silent mode is off. iPhone models with an Action Button can use Control Center or Action Button configuration for this control; other models use a Ring/Silent switch. See Apple’s ringtone guidance.
- Active Focus: Check whether a Focus is on, then review its People settings and any schedules that may activate it. Apple’s Focus guide covers allowed and silenced people.
- Unknown callers: If the caller is not saved, review unknown-caller handling and call filtering. Apple’s UK support guidance lists options including Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence for unsaved callers, as well as a separate filtering feature. Labels and availability may vary by software version and region. See Apple’s unknown-caller settings guidance.
- Blocked Contacts: If one particular person never gets through, review your blocked contacts. Apple includes this check in its troubleshooting guidance for calls that do not ring or go to voicemail.
- Calls going to voicemail: For that symptom, Apple also recommends checking service-related call settings such as Wi-Fi Calling where available. Availability depends on the carrier; network conditions can matter too. Use Apple’s call troubleshooting steps.
Apple’s current English iPhone User Guide pages provide the ringtone and Focus procedures, but do not identify a single English guide version in those pages. Menu paths can differ on older software; follow the labels shown on your iPhone.
