If your iPhone camera is black, blurry, frozen, or refusing to take photos, start with the safest checks: remove the case and camera accessories, clean both lenses, close and reopen the Camera app, restart the iPhone, and install any available iOS update. Then test the front camera, rear camera, and flashlight separately.
These steps can resolve obstructions, app freezes, software bugs, and overheating-related limitations, but they cannot repair physical damage or a failed camera module. If the camera or flash still fails after the sequence below—especially after a drop, liquid exposure, or previous repair—stop troubleshooting and arrange professional service.
1. Remove the case, lens protector, and magnetic accessories
Take the iPhone out of its case and remove anything covering or surrounding the camera. This includes:
- Camera lens protectors and films
- Magnetic car mounts and wallets
- Polarizing filters, lens extenders, and magnifiers
- Cases with metal plates or unusually tight camera cutouts
- Any accessory positioned near the rear camera or flash
Test the camera with the iPhone completely bare. A case or protector can block part of the lens, cause haze or flare, or prevent the camera from focusing correctly. Strong magnets or magnetic metal near supported iPhone camera systems can also interfere with optical image stabilization and closed-loop autofocus.

This is particularly important if the problem started immediately after installing a magnetic mount, wallet, lens accessory, or camera protector. Do not replace the accessory yet; first confirm whether removing it restores normal operation.
2. Clean the front and rear camera lenses
Fingerprints, dust, and residue can make photos look blurry, cloudy, or washed out even when the camera hardware is working normally. Gently wipe the front and rear camera lenses with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
A microfiber camera lens cleaning cloth is a useful task-specific accessory for removing surface debris without scratching the glass. Use it only for gentle dry cleaning; it is not a solution for a failed camera module, cracked lens, or persistent internal haze.
Avoid abrasive materials and do not press hard on the lens. If the lens glass is cracked, moisture appears inside the camera area, or the blur remains after cleaning and removing accessories, continue with the software checks below and prepare to seek service.
3. Close and reopen the Camera app
If the Camera app is frozen, shows a static image, or will not respond to the shutter button, close it once and reopen it.
On iPhone X and later
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and pause in the middle to open the app switcher.
- Find the Camera app preview.
- Swipe up on the Camera preview.
- Return to the Home Screen and open Camera again.
On iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier
- Double-click the Home button to open the app switcher.
- Find Camera.
- Swipe up on its preview.
- Open Camera again.
Force-closing every app routinely is unnecessary and can sometimes make apps take longer to reload. Use this step when Camera is unresponsive, then retest before moving on.
4. Restart the iPhone
A normal restart can clear a temporary camera-app or system-process problem. Turn the iPhone off using its normal power controls, wait briefly, and turn it on again. Then test both camera views.

If the iPhone is frozen and cannot be turned off normally, use a force restart. The button sequence depends on the model.
iPhone 8 or later, including Face ID models
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Do not release the Side button just because the screen briefly goes dark; continue holding it until the Apple logo appears. Older iPhone models use different combinations, so identify the model before using a legacy force-restart sequence. A force restart is not the same as erasing the iPhone and does not normally remove your photos or apps.
5. Update iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, install it and test the camera afterward.
An iOS update may include compatibility improvements and bug fixes, particularly if the camera stopped working after an app or system update. It is not a guaranteed repair, however. Before major troubleshooting or service, keep a current iCloud or computer backup when possible. Updating iOS is designed to leave your data and settings unchanged, but a backup is still sensible whenever a device problem may require further repair.

Do not test only one camera. Open the built-in Camera app and work through this short diagnostic:
- Take a photo with the rear camera.
- Switch to the front camera and take another photo.
- Switch back to the rear camera and try video if the preview works.
- Open Control Center and turn on the flashlight.
The results help narrow the problem:

7. Check camera permission for a third-party app
If the camera works in Apple’s Camera app but is black, unavailable, or unable to scan inside a social, video-call, banking, or document-scanning app, check that app’s permission:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera.
- Turn on access for the affected app.
Then close and reopen the app. You may also need to update it from the App Store or contact its developer if permission is enabled but the app still fails.

This setting applies to third-party apps. The built-in Camera app does not normally depend on a user-granted camera permission in the same way, so changing this setting is not a general fix for a black preview inside Apple’s Camera app.
8. Let an overheated iPhone cool down
If the iPhone feels hot, stop using the camera and flashlight. Move it away from direct sunlight, a hot car, or another heat source and let it return to a normal temperature naturally.
When an iPhone exceeds its normal operating temperature range, the camera flash and other features may be temporarily disabled. The intended ambient-use range is approximately 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F).
If a temperature warning appears, power the iPhone off if possible and place it in a cooler environment until it returns to a normal temperature. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer: rapid cooling can create condensation and introduce another risk. Once the phone is cool, restart it if necessary and test the camera again.

When the camera problem needs service
Arrange professional service if the camera or flash still does not work after you have:
- Removed cases, lens protectors, magnetic mounts, and other accessories
- Cleaned the front and rear lenses
- Closed and reopened Camera
- Restarted or force-restarted the iPhone
- Installed the available iOS update
- Tested both cameras and the flashlight
- Allowed an overheated iPhone to cool
Seek service sooner if the problem followed a drop, liquid exposure, visible lens or camera-module damage, or repeated failure of one camera. A camera that remains black, cannot focus, or produces persistent severe blur with no accessory attached is unlikely to be fixed by repeatedly restarting the phone.
For the safest repair path, use Apple or an authorized repair provider that can inspect the device and use appropriate genuine parts. Depending on your location, device, and eligibility, repair options can include an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple Repair Center, Independent Repair Provider, or an available Self Service Repair program.
Self Service Repair is intended for people experienced with the complexities of repairing electronic devices. It is not the default recommendation for ordinary camera troubleshooting, and opening an iPhone can create additional damage or affect water resistance. Do not open the phone or replace a camera module based only on a generic online fix.

If the camera stopped working after a screen, battery, housing, or camera repair, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History when that section is available on your model and iOS version.
An unknown, incomplete, nongenuine, or malfunctioning camera part can be associated with focusing problems, poor sharpness, a blank preview, or third-party apps that freeze or quit. This does not prove that a listed part is the cause, but it gives a repair technician useful context. Return to the repair provider or choose a qualified service channel rather than attempting repeated software resets.

What not to do
- Do not assume a restart always fixes a black camera. It is a safe diagnostic step, not a guarantee.
- Do not spray household glass cleaner directly onto the iPhone. Start with a clean, soft microfiber cloth.
- Do not keep using a magnetic accessory while diagnosing the camera. Remove it and test the bare phone first.
- Do not install random “iPhone repair” utilities. Generic PC repair software cannot be treated as an Apple-approved solution for iOS camera hardware.
- Do not refrigerate or freeze an overheated iPhone. Let it cool naturally.
- Do not open the iPhone casually. Camera replacement is model-specific and requires appropriate tools, parts, and repair knowledge.

Check the flash control in the Camera app, test another camera mode, and restart the iPhone. If the camera flash remains unavailable—or the camera itself also fails—seek service after confirming that the phone is not overheated.
Why does the camera work in Camera but not in another app?
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and enable access for the affected app. Then update or reopen the app. If permission is enabled and the problem continues, it is likely specific to that app or its compatibility with your iOS version.
What should I do if my iPhone camera stopped working after a repair?
