iPhone badges are small indicators on app icons—often a number showing unread items, such as unread email in Mail. To show or hide one for a specific app, open Settings > Notifications, select the app, and switch Badges on or off. This setting controls the icon indicator, not whether the app can send notifications.
What does a badge on an iPhone mean?
A notification badge is information displayed on an app icon. For example, the number above the Mail icon can show unread email. Apple describes badges as information that certain app icons can display when the setting is enabled: Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad.

How to turn app badges on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then choose the app you want to change. If that route does not match your iPhone’s menus, go to Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Notifications.
- Switch Badges on to show the app-icon indicator, or off to hide it.
Apple documents both routes in its notification instructions and iPhone User Guide. Menu labels can vary by iOS interface; if you cannot find the app or setting, search within Settings for the app’s name or “Notifications.”

Badges and Allow Notifications are separate controls. Turn Badges off to hide the indicator on the app icon while leaving the app’s notification permission unchanged. To stop that app from sending notifications, turn off Allow Notifications in its notification settings.

Why the Mail badge may not count every unread message
When Mail’s categories feature is used in iOS 18.2, the Home Screen badge shows unread messages in the Primary category. To have it show all unread messages instead, Apple’s documented path is Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications > [account] > Badge Count > All Unread Messages. The account-specific option applies to the Mail category scenario described by Apple: Use categories in Mail on iPhone.
