There is no published head-to-head test showing that iPhone or Android blocks more robocalls overall. For a balance between stopping unknown callers and preserving legitimate calls, use iPhone’s Ask Reason for Calling or automatic Call Screen on a supported Pixel. If avoiding interruptions matters more than hearing from every unsaved number, iPhone’s Silence option is more aggressive; Google Phone’s spam filter targets calls it identifies as spam.
These options work differently, and none is foolproof. The right choice depends on whether you want callers screened, suspected spam filtered, or all unknown numbers sent to voicemail.
Which call-screening setting should you choose?

Blocking and labeling are not the same: blocking or filtering intercepts a call, while a spam label warns you and leaves the decision to you. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that blocking services can also block calls you want. Its guidance is specific to US consumers: How To Block Unwanted Calls.
How iPhone screens unknown callers and spam
On iOS 26, open Settings > Apps > Phone. Apple separates screening unknown callers, filtering unknown numbers in Recents, and silencing carrier-identified spam. The choices are not interchangeable.

Ask Reason for Calling
Choose Ask Reason for Calling under Screen Unknown Callers to have an unknown caller provide information before the phone rings. Apple says the iPhone asks for the caller’s name and reason, then rings and shares the response so you can decide whether to answer. This is the most suitable iPhone option if you want a chance to hear from legitimate callers whose numbers are not saved. See Apple’s iOS 26 guidance on screening and blocking calls.
Silence
Choose Silence to send calls from unsaved numbers to voicemail rather than letting them ring. They still appear in Recents. This reduces interruptions more broadly than spam-only filtering, but can also catch expected calls from doctors, delivery drivers, schools, or other people whose numbers you have not saved.
Never
Never leaves calls from unsaved numbers ringing normally. Use it if you do not want iPhone screening to intervene.

Unknown Callers and Spam filters
Apple offers separate Unknown Callers and Spam filters. The Unknown Callers filter moves calls from unknown numbers out of the main Recents view into an Unknown Callers list. The Spam filter silences calls identified by your carrier as potential spam or fraud, sends them to voicemail, and places them in the Spam list. That spam filter depends on carrier identification; it is not a documented universal Apple spam classifier.
For caller identification and individual blocks, iPhone’s Call Blocking & Identification can use Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported caller-ID apps. You can also block an individual number. Caller ID can help you judge a call, but a label alone does not stop the phone from ringing.
How Google Phone handles spam calls on Android
In the Phone app by Google, open More > Settings > Caller ID and spam. Google says caller ID and spam protection is on by default; Filter spam calls is a separate option. The exact features visible can depend on the app and device.

Google says filtered calls do not generate missed-call or voicemail notifications, but remain in call history, and you can still check voicemail. You can mark a call as spam or correct a mistaken label. For current details, see Google’s Phone app guidance on caller ID and spam protection.

Google also says that when someone outside your contacts calls you, or you call them, the number may be sent to Google to identify a business caller or determine whether the call is spam. Google says it does not get phone numbers from your Contacts list. Consider this data handling when deciding whether to use the feature.
How Pixel Call Screen differs from Google Phone spam filtering
Pixel Call Screen is a separate screening capability, not another name for the Phone app’s Filter spam calls option. It can answer and question a caller before you decide whether to take the call. Google describes Basic, Medium, and Maximum protection levels, with automatic screening for spam, possibly faked numbers, and first-time callers on Pixel 7 and later. Menus and selection steps differ on Pixel 6 and earlier.

When automatic screening runs, Google says calls it determines are spam are hung up; calls it does not classify as spam ring and show the caller’s response. Google cautions, “Not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected.” Transcription may also fail to fully understand a caller. Screened-call information is not saved to the Google Account or the Google activity pages listed in its help guidance. Details and availability are on Google’s Pixel Call Screen help page.
Check model, country, and call conditions
Automatic Call Screen is listed for Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Manual screening is listed in additional countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India on specified newer Pixel models, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, the UK, and the US. Selected non-Pixel Android phones in the US and Canada may also have manual screening. These options are not universal, so check the phone’s Call Screen menu and the help page for the device and region.

How to choose a setting without missing important calls
- Decide what you want to happen to unknown callers. Choose screening if you want callers to identify themselves, or silence/filtering if you are willing to check voicemail and call history for legitimate calls.
- Start with the narrowest filter that meets your needs. Caller ID labels provide warnings without suppressing calls; spam filters target calls identified as spam; silencing all unsaved numbers is broader.
- Review call history, voicemail, and the relevant spam or unknown-caller list after enabling a filter. If a wanted call was mislabeled, use the app’s available option to mark it as not spam or otherwise correct the label.
- Check privacy and availability. Review the service’s data handling and confirm that your model, region, and call conditions support the feature you intend to use.
What call screening cannot guarantee
No setting guarantees that every robocall will be caught, and a filtered call can be a wanted one. Google explicitly warns that some spam and robocalls will not be detected. The FTC likewise cautions US consumers that blocking services might block calls they want; illegal robocalls can still get through. If an illegal robocall reaches you, the FTC advises hanging up, not pressing numbers, and reporting it. Its advice and reporting route are US-specific.
Neither Apple, Google, nor the FTC source cited here publishes a controlled cross-platform robocall blocking rate. A claim that iPhone or Android wins by a particular percentage—or that one blocks more calls overall—is not established by these sources.
