The iPhone 6 was a landmark 2014 iPhone: it brought a 4.7-inch screen to the standard model and helped establish the larger-screen direction Apple would continue. In 2026, it is best viewed as a legacy phone for limited use—not a dependable all-purpose smartphone. Apple lists iOS 12.5.8 for the iPhone 6, but that legacy update does not give it the current major-version support or feature set of newer iPhones.
What made the iPhone 6 notable?
Apple announced the iPhone 6 on September 9, 2014, alongside the larger iPhone 6 Plus. Its 4.7-inch screen marked a substantial change from the smaller standard iPhone of the time. Apple said the iPhone 6 display offered 38 percent more viewing area than the iPhone 5s; that is Apple’s comparison, not an independent measurement.
The change mattered because it made a larger display the standard choice rather than requiring buyers to choose the Plus model. Apple CEO Tim Cook called the phones “the biggest advancements in iPhone history” at launch—a promotional statement that reflects Apple’s positioning, not an independent verdict.
Apple reported more than 4 million combined iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus preorders in the first 24 hours, followed by more than 10 million combined sales in the first three days. Those figures show the scale of launch demand; they are not evidence by themselves that the phone was better than competing products.

What are the iPhone 6 specs?
The following are Apple’s listed specifications for the original iPhone 6, not results from a modern performance test.
| Specification | iPhone 6 |
|---|---|
| Display | 4.7 inches diagonally; 1334 × 750 resolution at 326 pixels per inch |
| Processor | Apple A8, 64-bit |
| Rear camera | 8 megapixels |
| Front camera | 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera |
| Original storage configurations | 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB |
| SIM | Nano-SIM |
Display and handling
The 4.7-inch display is the defining hardware change. It provides more room than the iPhone 5s-era standard size, while remaining smaller than the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Whether that size feels comfortable depends on your hand and preferences; the diagonal measurement alone does not establish how easy a particular used phone is to hold or operate.
Camera and speed
The rear camera is an 8-megapixel unit, and the front camera is 1.2 megapixels. Those figures describe resolution, not how well the cameras perform today. The A8 chip identifies the phone’s generation, but Apple’s specifications do not establish present-day speed in particular apps or tasks. If you need a camera or responsive daily phone, judge the specific tasks and apps you rely on rather than assuming the original specifications translate into modern performance.

Storage
Apple originally listed 16, 32, 64 and 128 GB configurations. Used listings may offer different storage capacities, so verify the exact device rather than relying on a listing headline. A smaller-capacity phone can be limiting if you plan to keep many photos, videos or apps on it.
Can you still use an iPhone 6 in 2026?
Apple’s security-release listing includes iOS 12.5.8 for iPhone 6, dated January 26, 2026. This is meaningful current context: the phone has received a release on its legacy iOS line. It does not mean the iPhone 6 has the same major iOS version, features or security position as newer phones. Apple’s general guidance is that “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.”
Apple’s January 2023 notice for iOS 12.5.7 named iPhone 6 and described a WebKit issue Apple said may have been actively exploited against earlier iOS versions. That example is a reason to install available updates; it does not establish the risk level of every iPhone 6 today. If you use one, check for available updates and install them. Do not treat a legacy update as a guarantee of ongoing support for every app or online service.

Whether a specific app works depends on its current requirements, which can change. Check the app’s current compatibility information before buying or relying on this phone for a particular service. This review does not verify a current app-by-app compatibility list.
Is the iPhone 6 still worth buying?
For most people who need a primary smartphone, the iPhone 6 is a poor choice in 2026 because it is tied to an old iOS line and may not meet current app, network or battery needs. It may make sense only for a narrowly defined purpose—such as a low-cost spare, a basic legacy-use device or a collection—if the specific unit is in suitable condition and supports the buyer’s needs.
- Consider it only if the price is low enough for the risk, the intended apps and services work on its software, and the device can connect to your carrier’s network.
- Pass on it if you need current major iOS features, assured app compatibility, dependable battery life, or a phone for essential everyday use.
- For collection interest, assess condition and completeness as collectible factors rather than expecting modern smartphone capability.
Check the battery and physical condition
Apple’s original battery estimates were up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, up to 10 hours of 3G or LTE internet use, and up to 11 hours of Wi-Fi internet use. Apple cautions that actual results depend on factors including network configuration. These launch-era figures say nothing about the health or runtime of a used phone now. Apple notes that built-in batteries have limited recharge cycles and may eventually need replacement.

Before buying, inspect the particular device and ask about its battery condition. A replacement battery may be an option, but check the repair provider, part compatibility and safety; a listing for a replacement part does not imply Apple endorsement.
Confirm storage, model and network support
Check the phone’s actual storage and exact model, then confirm compatibility with the carrier you intend to use. Apple says cellular-network availability depends on carrier policy and directs customers to carriers for details. LTE, VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling availability can vary by market and carrier, and a phone may be unsuitable where compatible network service has been retired. Do not assume that a Nano-SIM or a past ability to connect guarantees service where you live.

What should you know about Apple Pay?
At launch, Apple announced Apple Pay support for iPhone 6 in the United States with an iOS 8 update planned for October 2014. That is historical context, not confirmation that payment services are currently available or supported on a particular iPhone 6, in a particular region, or by a current bank or merchant.
