If you are choosing between these two 2013 flagships, the iPhone 5s is the better fit for a compact phone, Apple’s ecosystem and the more recently documented legacy update. Choose the Galaxy S4 if a much larger screen, Android familiarity or a removable battery matters more. Neither is a strong choice as a modern primary phone: both are far beyond their original support era, so check the apps and carrier service you need before buying.
At a glance: iPhone 5s vs. Galaxy S4
| What matters | iPhone 5s | Galaxy S4 |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Compact size, one-handed use and Apple ecosystem | Larger display, Android familiarity and removable battery |
| Display | 4-inch, 1136 × 640 | 5-inch, 1920 × 1080 |
| Rear camera resolution | 8 MP, with True Tone flash | 13 MP |

Figures describe launch-era specifications; used examples can vary by condition, storage capacity and regional or carrier model.
Why choose the iPhone 5s?
It is easier to carry and use one-handed
The iPhone 5s has a 4-inch display, compared with the Galaxy S4’s 5-inch screen. Its smaller footprint is the practical advantage if you want a phone that fits easily in a pocket or is more manageable in one hand. The S4’s larger screen is more comfortable for reading, maps and video.
It fits Apple’s ecosystem
If you already rely on Apple services or devices, the 5s may be the more familiar choice. Apple introduced Touch ID on the 5s and equipped it with its A7 chip. That was a notable launch-era feature set, but it does not make the phone suitable for current security-sensitive use.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
Its latest reported legacy update is newer
A January 2026 Tom’s Guide report says Apple released iOS 12.5.8 for the iPhone 5s. This is a dated software-status point, not a guarantee that today’s apps will install or work. Check compatibility for the specific apps you need.
Why choose the Galaxy S4?
The display is substantially larger and sharper on paper
Samsung’s 5-inch-class Galaxy S4 display has a 1920 × 1080 resolution, while the iPhone 5s display is 4 inches at 1136 × 640. The S4 is the more suitable of the two for watching video, reading and viewing maps, although a used screen should be checked for damage and burn-in.

- IOS Version upgradable to 15.8.5 but the device continues to receive security updates under the iOS 15 branch.

- 4.7" Retina HD display, 12MP camera and 4K video at 30 fps / 7MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash Black
The battery is removable
The Galaxy S4’s removable-back design makes replacing its battery or carrying a spare more straightforward. The iPhone 5s has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. In either phone, age can have a major effect on real-world endurance, so do not assume a surviving original battery will perform like a new one.
It may suit Android users better
If you are more comfortable with Android’s interface, the S4 may feel more familiar. Samsung no longer supports the Galaxy S4 series, according to the same January 2026 Tom’s Guide report. Treat it as a legacy device, not a supported Android phone.

Camera: resolution is not the whole story
The Galaxy S4 has a higher nominal rear-camera resolution at 13 MP; the iPhone 5s has an 8 MP camera and a True Tone flash. The megapixel figures alone do not establish which phone takes better photographs. The S4 wins on headline resolution, while the 5s offers a notable flash feature for its generation. Check focus, lens condition and flash operation on the actual device.
Battery life and likely repair costs
Apple’s iPhone 5s technical specifications rate its built-in battery for up to 10 hours of 3G talk time, up to 10 hours of LTE or Wi-Fi internet use, up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback. These are Apple’s stated ratings, not a prediction for a used handset with an aged battery.

- 4.7-inch Retina HD display. 5G capable
- Advanced single-camera system with 12MP Wide camera; Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles, Portrait mode, and 4K video up to 60 fps
- 7MP FaceTime HD camera with Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles, Portrait mode, and 1080p video recording. Home button with Touch ID for secure authentication
- A15 Bionic chip for lightning-fast performance. Durable design and IP67 water resistance
- Up to 15 hours of video playback
Samsung described the Galaxy S4’s removable-back hardware and larger battery at launch. A used S4 may make a battery swap easier, but the replacement part and installation still add to the cost. Compare the total price after any needed battery replacement rather than judging by the seller’s asking price alone.

What to check before buying either phone
- Identify the exact model. Galaxy S4 variants differ by carrier. Confirm the model number and supported bands with the carrier you plan to use; do not assume every S4 works on every network.
- Test the battery and charging. Check charging behavior and whether the phone shuts down unexpectedly. Price a replacement battery and, where relevant, installation before committing.
- Inspect the screen and hardware. Look for cracks, discoloration or burn-in; test camera focus, buttons, speakers, charging port and Touch ID on an iPhone 5s.
- Check your essential apps first. Verify that the apps you depend on still support the phone’s operating system. A reported update does not mean current apps or services remain compatible.
- Account for condition and recourse. Prefer a seller that provides clear condition grading, return rights and a warranty, especially for a phone this old.
Verdict: which one should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 5s if compact size and Apple familiarity are your priorities and the apps you need still work. Choose the Galaxy S4 if the bigger display, Android interface or removable battery is more important. If you need a dependable, secure everyday phone with broad current app support, neither is a sensible equivalent to a current budget smartphone.
