The iPhone 18 Pro is a strong but cautious upgrade: its battery life impressed Smartprix reviewer Mehtab Ansari, while its variable-aperture main camera adds useful creative control. Much of the camera hardware and overall formula remain familiar, though, and the phone’s price—especially Smartprix’s reported India price—makes it difficult to recommend as an automatic upgrade from last year’s Pro. For US buyers, Apple lists a $1,199 starting price.
What changed on the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. The main camera’s variable aperture is the most visible new photographic control; other headline changes include the A20 Pro chip, a next-generation vapor chamber, a smaller Dynamic Island, and battery improvements. Apple describes these as major advances, but that is the company’s characterization, not an independent comparative test. Apple’s announcement also quotes SVP Greg Joswiak calling it “the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made.”
Variable aperture adds control, not a wholesale camera overhaul
The 48MP Fusion Main camera can change aperture, controlling how much light reaches the sensor and influencing depth of field. Smartprix reviewer Mehtab Ansari says that flexibility can help with close-up subjects such as documents or objects. However, Ansari describes the broader camera hardware as largely familiar from iPhone 17 Pro, with the main camera being the important exception.

In the review, video and predictable color and exposure are strengths; telephoto reach, low-light detail, flare, and ghosting are limitations. These are the reviewer’s judgments from a hands-on review, not universal results for every scene or user. The new aperture may matter most if you actively want control over focus depth; it is less compelling if you mainly want a substantially different camera system.

How good is iPhone 18 Pro battery life?
Apple advertises up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro. That is a controlled video-playback claim, not a promise of 36 hours of everyday use or a screen-on-time estimate. Apple says its testing used preproduction devices and software: typical-use battery work used LTE and 5G networks with a representative usage profile, while video playback tests repeated an HDR movie under controlled settings. Actual runtime varies with use, configuration, signal, and other factors. Apple’s battery-test notes give the method and qualifications.
Separately, Ansari used a retail-purchased iPhone 18 Pro as his primary phone for more than a week on Airtel in Hyderabad and described its battery life as excellent. That is useful real-world experience, but one reviewer’s usage and network cannot establish how long the phone will last for every owner. Apple lists up to 45 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only Pro Max; it is a different model and should not be treated as the Pro’s runtime.

Apple also lists trade-in credits and carrier offers in the US, but eligibility and terms depend on the device, carrier, and conditions; do not assume a particular discount applies. In India, Smartprix reports that the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro costs about ₹30,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro there. That is a market-specific comparison, not a universal measure of the price increase. Apple’s US pricing and Smartprix’s review and India pricing should be read in their respective markets.
Should you upgrade from iPhone 17 Pro or an older model?
For an iPhone 17 Pro owner, the case for upgrading is narrow: variable aperture, the newer chip and cooling system, and the battery improvements need to be worth the added cost to you. Smartprix’s review finds the changes modest overall and suggests that owners of the 17 Pro may not find enough here to justify moving up. A worn-out battery or a specific need for aperture control could change that personal calculation.
Smartprix recommends considering the 18 Pro for owners of an iPhone 15 Pro or older, but that is the publication’s recommendation, not a rule. Compare your current phone’s battery condition and camera needs with the new model’s local price, storage tier, and any trade-in offer you actually qualify for. Also account for the 211g weight: if you prefer a lighter handset, the upgrade may not feel like one.

What should you know about the design and ownership?
Apple lists a 6.27-inch measured display diagonal; the actual area is smaller because the display has rounded corners. The phone weighs 211g and has an aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 front, and Ceramic Shield back. It comes in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy, with storage from 256GB to 2TB.
