The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a large conventional smartphone starting at $1,299 in the U.S.; Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra opens into an 8-inch display and costs more. At the cited U.S. prices, the Fold8 Ultra’s 256GB list price is $800.99 above Apple’s starting price, or $550.99 above it at the Samsung page’s then-current promotional price. The choice is primarily between a familiar phone design and a foldable screen for larger-screen work and media—not a proven winner in camera quality or battery life.
Price difference in the U.S.
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with U.S. availability beginning September 18. Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra on August 6, 2026; its U.S. purchase page was accessed on October 7, 2026. The Samsung page is a live listing, so its displayed prices can change.
| Phone and storage | U.S. listed price | Price shown on Samsung page, accessed October 7, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max, starting price | $1,299 | Not applicable |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, 256GB | $2,099.99 | $1,849.99 |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, 512GB | $2,299.99 | $2,049.99 |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, 1TB | $2,699.99 | $2,449.99 |
The Fold8 Ultra’s 256GB list price is $800.99 above the iPhone’s $1,299 starting price. Using the Samsung page’s observed 256GB promotional price instead, the difference is $550.99. These are not matched storage configurations: Apple’s number is its starting price, while Samsung’s is specifically for 256GB. Apple offers 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB iPhone configurations; Samsung’s cited U.S. page lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Prices may differ outside the U.S. (Apple’s announcement; Samsung’s U.S. purchase page.)

Design and display: phone or foldable workspace?
| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Conventional smartphone | Foldable smartphone |
| Weight | 249g | 215g |
| Main display | 6.86-inch measured diagonal | 8-inch main display |
| Thickness | Not stated in the cited specifications | 4.1mm unfolded |
The iPhone keeps the single-screen phone form: its 6.86-inch display is available without opening or repositioning the device. The Fold8 Ultra’s main screen is larger when unfolded, and Samsung presents it as a space for multitasking and creative workflows. That larger canvas may suit people who regularly keep multiple tasks or media on screen; it is not evidence by itself that the phone improves productivity for every user. Samsung also highlights Gemini Notebook and Now Nudge in its launch material; availability and capabilities can vary by region and software.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Although Samsung’s listed phone is lighter, its weight does not describe how it feels or fits in a pocket when folded. The choice is about how you use the device as much as display size: the iPhone is a large, ready-to-use handset, while the Fold8 Ultra offers a larger unfolded workspace.
Camera hardware and what the specifications can establish
| Camera detail | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Main camera | 48MP Fusion Main with variable aperture | 200MP main with HDR at 200MP |
| Ultra-wide | Apple’s cited technical page describes the Pro camera system; a specific ultra-wide module detail is not stated here | 50MP ultra-wide |
Megapixel counts do not measure overall image quality. The published specifications establish the camera hardware above, but they do not provide comparable sample photos or independent head-to-head testing. There is not enough evidence here to say which phone takes better pictures in daylight, at night, or in video.

Battery and charging: unlike claims, not a runtime contest
Apple says the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max model achieved up to 45 hours of video playback in Apple’s test. That is a manufacturer test result, not a guarantee of everyday battery life. Samsung lists a 5,000mAh battery and 45W fast charging for the Fold8 Ultra. Capacity and charging wattage do not establish how long it lasts on a charge, and they cannot be directly compared with Apple’s video-playback figure. The available manufacturer information does not establish which phone lasts longer in comparable real-world use.
Apple says a power adapter is not included with the iPhone; the specifications list a USB-C charge cable. Apple also announced MagSafe cases priced at $49–$59 in the U.S. at launch. Check current availability and confirm exact model compatibility before buying an accessory. (Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max technical specifications; Apple launch announcement.)

Durability and resistance
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max IP68 under IEC 60529, with testing to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple notes that resistance can decrease with wear. Samsung’s cited launch material describes Flex Titanium support as contributing to slimness and reduced crease visibility; it does not give a directly comparable IP rating in that material. That distinction means the available cited information does not support a like-for-like water-resistance comparison.
Software, ecosystem and availability
The iPhone runs iOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence; Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU. Samsung’s device runs Android with Galaxy foldable software and Samsung productivity features. Exact software features and regional availability should be checked for the market where you plan to buy.

Both manufacturers identify official purchase channels, but availability varies by market. Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra is sold through carriers, retailers, Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores. Apple’s announcement gives its U.S. launch dates and pricing. If you are buying outside the U.S., check local availability, configuration and pricing rather than assuming the U.S. figures apply. - Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want a conventional large-screen phone, prefer iOS and Apple’s ecosystem, or value its available 2TB storage option.
- Consider the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you expect to use its unfolded 8-inch screen for multitasking, creative work or media often enough to justify its higher U.S. price.
- Compare your actual configurations. The headline price gap compares Apple’s starting price with Samsung’s 256GB model; storage tiers and current promotions change the comparison.
- Do not decide on camera or battery claims alone. The cited material lists different camera hardware and unlike battery figures, but supplies no independent head-to-head results.
Samsung reported that preorders for its new Galaxy Z lineup increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. That is Samsung’s company-reported comparison, not an independently audited market statistic, and it does not determine which of these two phones is right for an individual buyer. (Samsung launch announcement.)
